60

We drove the thirty miles to Broadview in tense silence. We all had our own reasons for wanting to do this. Brandon started out doing it because we’re friends and he’s always game for a good fight but now it was because of Kimberley. Rev hated anyone that I hated and he’s always had my back, not matter what or who.
Jasper has been my older brother of sorts, I wouldn’t say he was a father figure to me but we were so involved with each other’s lives that no matter what happened we’d always be there for each other. He had become invested in finding proof against Joseph even though he wasn’t close with my father.
Me on the other hand, I had every reason in the book to do this. Those bastards took my parents, ripped my family apart and then tried to ruin me as a Sire, make my life a living hell and thought they’d get away with it all.
The house was located on the outskirts of Broadview and we stopped the car a mile away from it. There were a few guards walking the perimeter of the mansion. It looked old and worn down and I could see signs of restorations being done.
“This feels wrong,” I said as we sat in the shadows of the trees and watched the house.
“They’re obviously hiding inside, I’m sure there are more guards inside,” Jasper said in a whisper.
“I can take the outside guards out without anyone knowing,” Timothy said and we all looked at him.
“Do it,” I said and we watched as his figure blurred and within the blink of an eye the five guards were taken down silently.
Timothy stood in front of the door on the steps that led up to the porch and waved us over. Rev shook his head as Brandon whispered, “show off,” and we quietly made our way to where Timothy stood with his hands in his pockets.
“I heard you Brandon,” Timothy said as we reached him.
“It was a compliment,” he mused.
“Sure,” Jasper goaded them.
“Shut up,” Brandon said with a smile.
Rev kicked the front door down and we entered the house. The scents were faint and I could see renovations were in full swing on the inside of the house, other than that, the large entry way and living room was empty.
There was no furniture downstairs and I didn’t smell the Elders, although their scents would be different now I had the feeling that they weren’t in this house. We checked every room and found it empty, no guards, no Elders and no Joseph.
“Shit,” Jasper said angrily.
“Now what?” Brandon asked as we stood in the empty house.
“We go back and I keep on searching,” Timothy said looking dismayed.
“Halfling,” Baz said in my head.
“What is it Baz?” I asked him.
“Do you feel it?” he asked me.
“Feel what?” I asked him growing impatient.
“Rylee’s fear,” he hissed and then her emotions hit me.
“Get back to the house now!” I yelled as I started running for the front door.
“What’s going on?” Jasper yelled behind me.
“Something’s wrong!” I yelled as I stopped instantly and Baz separated from me.
Without thinking he coiled his tail and I jumped up and threw myself forward as he took off into the night. His wings flapped hard as he gained altitude and I saw the confused looks on the team’s faces as they piled back into the SUV.
Baz soared above our house but he didn’t land and then he broke away to the left and flew into the darkness as I held on for my life. He flapped his wings once and then soared through the night as I looked down on Aurora.
“Where are you going?” I asked him.
“She’s not in the house,” he said.
“Find her,” I said to him.
“What the hell do you think I’m doing moron?” he asked me as he flexed his shoulders and I slid down his back and his tail wrapped around my waist. He circled once and then he dropped me the last few feet and I landed on a roof and almost slid off it.
He dove into me and I looked around and lowered myself to my stomach as I crawled to the other side of the roof and looked into the front yard. There were men with guns and I backed away slowly. I didn’t have my phone with me and I saw an open window a few yards away from me.
I crept towards it trying not to make any noise and I lowered my body into the open window and landed on a plush carpet. I stood up and let my eyes adjust to the darkness of the room. It smelled like Carson and realization hit me that Baz had brought me to their house.
I listened at the bedroom door but it was quiet all around me and I opened it slightly and peeked through. The hall was dark and I slid outside and looked around. I headed to the stairs and took them slowly as I pulled the gun from the holster where it nestled against my back.
“Slow and steady, I can feel her, she’s here,” Baz said and that got me moving a little bit faster.
“How the hell did Joseph get to her?” I asked him and he rolled his eyes at me.
“Like I was there,” he said and I glared at him.
I heard faint voices coming from my left on the second floor and I stopped in front of the door. Baz roared slightly in my head and I closed my eyes as I concentrated on their individual scents. There were three of them, the three Elders and they were arguing. I opened the door and closed it behind me quietly as they all turned around and looked at me with fear in their eyes.
“Isn’t this a nice surprise,” I said.
“Lucas,” James said as he started backing away.
“I’m pretty sure I told you to run,” I said as I aimed the gun at James and shot him in the head.
“Lucas, wait,” Gareth said and I shot him in the face as well.
I turned to Peter where he remained sitting in the chair facing the fireplace and drinking whiskey from a glass. He wasn’t afraid and he barely even looked at Gareth and James where they lay in their own pools of blood.
“Any last words Peter?” I asked him.
“I always knew you were going to be a problem, ever since you got that damn grey dragon I knew,” he said with a sad smile.
“Why?” I asked him.
“Your father asked too many questions and just like you he never let anything go,” he said as he placed the glass down on a table next to the chair.
“You had to know that you’d never get away with it all,” I said to him.
“But we did for more than thirty years,” he said.
“And about to be ended by a Grey,” I said as I aimed the gun at his head.
“I was stupid Lucas, Joseph wanted to kill you that day as you sat in the hospital crying over your parents dead bodies but I told him to leave you, I should have let him kill you,” he said and I pulled the trigger and watched with satisfaction as his head exploded right in front of me.
I felt satisfaction flood me as I left the room and I felt fearless as I headed down the stairs. There was one man guarding the basement and I shot him before he could even blink or register my presence. I opened the door of the basement and Rylee’s scent mingled with fear washed over me.
“This might sting just a little,” Joseph said as I crept down the stairs.
“Joseph!” I yelled his name as I turned the corner.
“I’ve underestimated you yet again,” he said with a smirk.
“Are you okay?” I asked Rylee as I glanced over at her. She was tied to a chair and her nose was already bloody.
“Yes,” she said her voice sounding hoarse.
“This will be fun,” Joseph said as he stood next to her.
“Not for you,” I said and aimed the gun at him. He lowered himself so that his head was next to Rylee’s and he had a knife at her throat. I could see him press it to her throat tightly and her eyes widened slightly.
“Close your eyes Rylee,” I whispered and pulled the trigger the moment she did. Joseph’s head snapped back and his blood splattered onto Rylee’s face. She screamed as I touched her and started untying the ropes.
“You’re okay, I’ve got you,” I said to her as she opened her eyes and looked at Joseph’s dead body behind her.
“Carson’s here somewhere,” she said as I held her close to me.
“How?” I asked her.
“I don’t know. Joseph grabbed me in our room and held that knife to my stomach. He said if I made one sound then he would kill everyone in the house so I went with him quietly,” she said and looked down as tears formed in her eyes.
“It’s okay, I’m here now,” I said as I took her hand and I led her out of the basement.
I kept Rylee behind me as I eased the door open and listened for any sounds. I couldn’t hear anything and I pulled her along as we walked through the kitchen and down the hallway. We walked past the dining room and into the large open foyer where the front door was.
“Not so fast Lucas,” Carson said as he stepped from an archway aiming the gun at me. My gun was at my side and he looked at me.
“Put the gun on the floor and kick it away,” he said and I let the gun fall as Rylee gripped my hand. I kicked it off to the side and Carson’s eyes followed it. He raised the gun in my direction as I took a step forward.
“You’ll never win Carson,” I said to him as he laughed.
“Neither of you are leaving this house alive,” he said to me and pulled the trigger. I felt the bullet as it buried itself in my shoulder and I heard Carson’s intake of breath as I looked from my bloodied shoulder back to him.
“It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance,” Timothy said with a grin as he bit into Carson’s neck and I turned to shield Rylee from the sight as Carson screamed. He screamed again and then I heard his neck snap.
Timothy was wiping his mouth with a handkerchief as I looked back at him and he smiled at me. Rylee was shaking and I picked her up as she kept her eyes closed.
“You had to wait until he shot me?” I asked him and he laughed.
“I always liked making an entrance,” he said as he walked to the front door.
“Asshole,” I said and he laughed again, “thanks.”
“Like I said, I like you Lucas,” he smiled at me.
