Five years later …
Nova and I had gotten married a month later on the farm, our close friends and family present. It was a small, intimate wedding and we’d gone to the Bahamas for two weeks afterwards. Lucas and Rylee had stayed at the farm with Mary-Joe and Simon to watch the kids.
Lucas and Rylee loved Nova and in return she loved them as well. The kids were happy with our union and Alexis and Abigail were now truly sisters. Nine months after our honeymoon, Shae was born. She had a full head of black hair and the most beautiful pair of blue eyes that reminded you of the sky.
We lived our lives in peace, albeit sometimes boring but always loving. We were happy and Nova was a great mom to our five children. The boys were fifteen and the girls were turning ten with Shae at almost five. Shae ruled over her brothers and sisters with a strong mindset, a strong will of her own and she had me wrapped around her finger.
“It seems you’re happy to see me,” Nova said as I turned towards her and pulled her closer to me.
“I’m always happy to see you,” I whispered in her ear.
“Mom! Dad!” Abigail knocked on the door and my erection disappeared within seconds.
“What Abby?” I asked as the door opened and Abigail peeked inside.
“I think Alexis is sick, she threw up and she has a fever,” she said.
Nova was up in an instant and out of the door as I lay there wanting to close my eyes again but knowing I had to get up. In the bathroom Alexis was leaning over the toilet while Nova sat next to her with a cold cloth pressed against her neck.
“I’ll call Steve,” I said from the doorway.
“He can’t help her, it’s the change,” Nova said.
“Oh,” I said knowing that Alexis wouldn’t be going to school today. “Here let me take her.”
I picked Alexis up and when her head rested against my chest she vomited again. Abeloth was laughing at me in my head as I breathed through my mouth.
“Sorry,” Alexis said weakly.
“That’s a lot of puke for such a tiny girl,” I said as Nova tried not to laugh.
“I’ll take the other kids to school,” Nova said as I put the water on in the shower and climbed inside with Alexis.
I sat in the shower with Alexis as she vomited two more times, both times on me. Her pajamas were soaked as I rinsed the vomit from her hair and then washed it. Her eyes were closed and I waited ten more minutes but she didn’t throw up again.
I wrapped her in a towel and carried her to her bed. I placed the dustbin right beside her and started to clean the vomit from her floor as she slept. I stood by her door and watched her until Nova came back from the school run.
“Did you survive?” Nova asked.
“Yeah, she hasn’t thrown up in the last half hour and now that you’re back I need to go wash my hair,” I said as she laughed.
“Thank you,” she said.
“She’s my daughter too,” I said over my shoulder.
Alexis slept until noon, her skin clammy and then hot as the fever burned through her. When she came down the stairs she looked like herself and her temperature was normal. She looked sheepishly at me as I opened my arms and she settled down on my lap.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
“For vomiting on me?” I asked as she nodded her head. “That’s okay buttercup.”
“I love you Daddy,” she whispered and hugged me.
“Love you too, do you want some lunch?” I asked her.
“Oh you’re up, how are you feeling?” Nova asked her.
“Much better and hungry,” she said.
We ate lunch and I smiled the first time Alexis’s eyes flashed silver. Her fae side had emerged and now so would her creativity. I felt a deep stirring of pride as I watched them together, she really was my daughter, even if we weren’t blood.
We didn’t plan a party for the girls as they opted for a family night of movies and pizza. It was a Friday and I was surprised that they didn’t want a big party. They were popular at school and they had a lot of friends. Abigail had turned ten on Wednesday and Alexis was ten today.
“Daddy bunchikins!” Shae yelled when the doors opened and she saw me at the front gate of the school.
“Hey wild child,” I said as she ran full speed towards me and jumped, having every trust in me that I would catch her.
“Ooh I missed you so so so much,” she practically yelled.
“Missed you too wild one,” I said with a smile as I walked back to the car.
“How’s Ally?” she asked.
“Much better,” I said.
“Does she have wings?” she asked eagerly.
“Wings?” I repeated.
“She became a fairy today didn’t she?” she asked.
“How did you know that?” I asked her.
“So does she?”
“Does she what?”
“Have wings Daddy,” she repeated and rolled her eyes.
“Not that I saw,” I said.
“Please let’s just go,” Abby said as she climbed in next to Shae.
“Ally’s a fairy now,” Shae said.
“No fair,” Abby said.
“Hello Daddy, how was your day? Oh, it was good thanks Abigail, how was yours?” I said.
“It was fine,” she said and crossed her arms over her chest.
“What happened?” I asked her as I started to drive away from the school.
“It’s that bloody Justin O’Neill,” she said.
“Bloody? What did the poor kid do?”
“He won’t stop pulling my hair in class,” she said.
“Ah, he likes you,” I said.
“Well I don’t like him,” she said as I pulled into the driveway and parked the car in front of the garage.
The girls trailed behind me as I walked towards the porch and waited for them to go inside. “Shae, come on.” She was standing on the lawn, looking up into the sky and Abby’s backpack hit the porch as it slipped from her hand.
“Shae!” I said a bit louder.
“Wait Daddy,” she said without turning around.
“I feel it,” Abigail said as she walked down the porch steps slowly.
“Feel what?” I asked.
“Chusi!” Shae yelled and then doubled over as she threw up.
“Shae!” I yelled and started running towards her.
Abeloth separated from me and I heard Wynter yelling as he and Milo came running down the driveway. Shae was both clammy and feverish, her pupils dilated as she lay on the grass taking deep breaths.
“They’re coming,” Abeloth said.
“Who’s coming?” I asked him as Shae threw up again.
“Ryder?” Nova called from the kitchen door and then I felt her hand on my shoulder as she knelt down next to us.
“Daddy, look!” Abigail said and I followed her gaze up into the sky.
The sun reflected off their wings and I stood up straight. They were gliding through the sky and the smaller one widened her eyes as she touched the surface of the grass and then rolled forward as she stumbled and fell.
“Oops!” she said loudly and stood up straight as she folded her wings behind her back.
“Abeloth,” the bigger one said and bowed her head.
“Scylla,” Abeloth said and inhaled her scent deeply.
“Abigail,” Scylla said and dove into her with a force that set Abigail down on the grass. Abigail screamed as she merged with her dragon.
“Mine … where’s mine?” the smaller dragon asked as she looked around. “Shae!” she yelled excitedly and bounded towards Shae.
“Chusikins!” Shae said as she sat up and the little dragon rubbed her face against Shae’s.
“Mine forever,” Chusi said and merged with Shae.
Shae’s eyes flashed yellow and silver, alternating as Chusi settled down within her. “Let’s get them inside,” I said as Wynter picked Shae up.
“I felt something,” Wynter said as he looked at me, his eyes also flashing yellow.
“You felt this?” I asked him.
“No, something else, but maybe I’m wrong,” he said.
Abigail was standing upright with Nova’s arm around her shoulder and I lifted her up into my arms. “They’ll need to sleep,” I said as I followed Wynter inside.
“This is unbelievable,” Nova said when I came back downstairs after tucking the girls into their beds. They’d be sleeping for the next twelve hours and Abigail would miss her own pizza party.
“What is it?” Nova asked as I looked questioningly at her.
“Shae … she’s both,” I said.
“What do you mean both?” she asked me.
“Her eyes were yellow and silver, she’s a fairy and a dragon,” I said.
“That’s not possible,” Nova said as she sat down at the kitchen table.
“I know what I saw,” I said.
“The stronger DNA always wins, there’s no such thing as a half breed,” Nova said and I saw fear settle in her eyes.
