Almost three years later ….
Rex and I spoke over the phone once a month and he’d give me the name of a new enemy. I killed them all silently but always left their bodies as a message. The discovery of these men and sometimes women always made the papers and Rex would congratulate me the next time we spoke.
The jobs for the King I did alone but Felix always went with me when we did work for the Elders. Wynter and Milo would turn five in two days and Megan had about four weeks of pregnancy left and they were both little hellions. Milo was faster than Wynter but Wynter was stronger.
Megan was pregnant again, this time with a girl, and we were both excited at her arrival. I was also awaiting the news of the King’s passing. Time had caught up with us and I had an uneasy feeling. Rex himself had said that Florin was spoiled.
“Why aren’t you dressed yet?” Megan asked as she came out of the bathroom.
“Just thinking,” I said.
“You can’t sit and wait for him to die every single day,” she said.
“I know,” I said and started buttoning up my shirt.
“Hurry up or we’re going to be late for the ceremony,” she said as she left the room and I heard her going down the stairs.
It had taken Max almost seven months to convince Bethany to go on their first date. It had been a huge success and she had given birth to their son a week ago. She had literally ran away from him the first time he showed her his wolf, but on the island there were only so many places to go.
It had taken all of us to convince her that she wasn’t crazy and she had fainted when Felix showed her his fangs and confessed to being a vampire. Abeloth didn’t want to separate from me and give the poor girl a heart attack.
“Let’s go,” I said as I found her and Wynter in the kitchen. He was finally potty trained since he refused to do so since he turned two until a few months before his fourth birthday. Milo of course had done it perfectly.
“Let’s go add this baby to our tribe,” Megan said as we left the house and made our way to the boat.
We crossed the lake and greeted the tribe members as we all gathered at our meeting hall. This was also our ceremony hall and we mostly used it for everything from funeral gatherings to weddings and adding new members.
“We’re all set Chief,” Max said as he walked towards me holding his hand in front of Braxton’s eyes to block the sun out.
I walked up to the raised dais and the crowd grew silent as Max and Bethany followed me with little Braxton being held by Max. The hall had been decorated and afterwards we’d have a party. Megan nodded to me from the back and I smiled at the tribe members.
“Grey Tribe! Welcome to the joining ceremony of Braxton Foster,” I said as they erupted with applause and Braxton jerked awake.
“Braxton Foster, with the joining of our blood, I welcome you to our tribe as a fully fledged member. You are presented today by your father, Max Foster and your mother, Bethany Foster as a wolf member where your position will be decided once you reach the age of sixteen and have obtained your beast,” I continued.
I took the needle and made a pinprick on his forefinger and the same with mine. I pressed my finger against his and felt his bond connect to me and then with the rest of the tribe. It was a full twenty seconds before cheers broke out and Braxton started crying.
“Welcome little one,” I said and kissed his forehead.
“Thank you Chief,” Max said with a broad smile.
We danced and ate cake and celebrated Braxton’s future journey with the tribe. It was a fun-filled day that came to an abrupt end when Wynter and Milo decided to jump off of the hall’s roof. Felix had zipped out of the hall at their shrieks which turned to screams seconds later.
“What happened?” I asked as Felix held a crying Milo.
“We were trying to fly,” Wynter said, his arm standing at an odd angle.
“Why? You know you can’t fly,” I said to him as I took his arm gently in my hand. “Doesn’t it hurt?”
“Nope,” he said with a smile.
“We need to get that arm checked out in any way,” I said as I picked him up.
“I’m here Chief,” Derek said from behind me. “I heard the bone break, clear as day.”
We walked over to the small infirmary we had there and I put Wynter down on the bed as Megan rushed inside. “What the hell happened?”
“He broke his arm,” I said.
“Oh sweety, are you okay?” Megan asked as she hugged him.
“It doesn’t hurt Mommy, I’m fine,” Wynter said.
“Does this hurt?” Derek asked him as he pushed the bone back into place.
“Are you crazy?” Megan asked as I winced but Wynter didn’t move or make a sound.
“I think Wynter might have CIP,” Derek said.
“What’s that?” I asked him.
“It’s an insensitivity to pain,” he said.
“Isn’t that dangerous?” Megan asked him.
“Daddy look my arm’s all better,” Wynter said as he turned his wrist and wiggled his fingers.
“We’ll need to x-ray the arm to determine where the break is and how bad it’s broken,” Derek said.
“We’ll meet you at the clinic,” I said.
Megan held Wynter on her lap as I followed Derek’s car to the clinic just outside the borders of Bushnell. Milo had fallen on top of Wynter and he wasn’t hurt, just winded. Wynter had told us exactly what happened on the drive.
Megan and I waited outside as Derek took Wynter for the x-ray and he walked out of the room with a frown on his face. I felt worried instantly because he looked confused, very confused.
“What’s wrong? How bad is the break?” I asked him.
“His arm healed Chief,” Derek said.
“That’s not possible,” I said.
“This is his x-ray, there’s no break,” he said.
“Impossible, we all saw his arm,” Megan said.
“Our healing only kicks in at the age of fourteen,” I said. “And then it progresses until we merge with our dragons.”
“Nobody’s healing is this instant,” Derek said.
“So he’s okay?” Megan asked.
“He’s fine, no pain even when I stuck a needle in his thigh,” Derek said.
“Easy Megan,” I said as her eyes flashed yellow and she glared at him.
“You can take him home, he’s healing is so advanced that even if he hurts himself and doesn’t feel it, he’ll heal,” Derek said.
“Thanks Derek,” I said and guided Megan into the room where Wynter waited for us.
At home Megan told me in detail how she was going to dismember Derek if he ever touched Wynter again or stuck a needle in his thigh and I only laughed. Wynter had gone outside to play as we sat by the kitchen table.
“How does this even happen? How do you not feel any pain?” Megan asked.
“I don’t know Megan, but it’s both a blessing and curse,” I said.
“How is this a blessing?” she asked.
“He’ll be a good warrior, he won’t be slowed down by pain like the rest of us, the curse is him not realizing the extent of his injuries,” I said.
“He heals freakishly fast,” she said.
“Then it’s just a blessing,” I said and leaned back in my seat.
“You’re thinking what a great hunter he’ll make someday,” she said.
“It’ll be his choice but if he wanted to join the Unit for a while I wouldn’t stop him,” I said.
“And I’d prefer if he went to College first,” she said.
“I didn’t go to College,” I said.
“Yeah and you were all grown up by the time you were nineteen, serious and cold and the Unit did that to you, you never had a chance to really just be a teenager and have that whole experience,” she said.
“I had plenty of experiences,” I said.
“Yeah with your piercing,” she said.
“I don’t regret my life Megan and Wynter won’t regret his either but I’m not going to be the parent that tells him how to live his life,” I said.
“That’s what parents do,” Megan said exasperated.
“If my father had his way and I did what was expected of me I’d be bonded to Tia,” I said.
“It worked out for you, it doesn’t for everyone,” she said.
“It worked out for you as well so don’t tell me it won’t work out for him,” I said.
“You’re going to push him to join the Unit, aren’t you?” she asked me.
“He needs to be prepared for his future,” I said.
“A future he’ll choose for himself,” she said.
“A future where he kills the King,” I said.
“Daddy! I made a new friend, he fell from the sky and then he chased me and then he jumped inside me!” Wynter yelled with excitement as he stumbled into the kitchen.
“What friend?” Megan asked.
“Wynter!” I jumped up from the chair as Wynter collapsed and I picked him up. His eyes were closed but his breathing was even and his heartbeat regular.
“What’s wrong with him?” Megan asked as she knelt next to us.
“He has merged with his dragon,” Abeloth said to me and my eyes flashed yellow as he took partial control.
“He’s too young,” I murmured as Abeloth retreated.
“Too young for what?” Megan asked.
“Abeloth said he merged with his dragon,” I said.
“Things just got a lot more complicated,” Megan said as she took him from me. “We’re still going to talk about this killing the King business.” She took Wynter upstairs and I knew from experience that he’d be out for at least twelve hours.
