“Welcome dragonkin of my lair,” I said as everyone settled down.
“I met with our new Elders this morning and I know you’ve all heard a lot of rumours and most of them are probably true. Yes, I disbanded the previous Elders by killing off their dragons. Yes, we have Carson McIntyre in our custody. I have also been granted an execution warrant for Joseph McIntyre as proof have finally been found that he was responsible for killing my parents,” I said and had to stop talking because of the cheers and clapping.
“The McIntyre lair has officially been disbanded as of today and the whole of Aurora is now under our protection and you are all free to move through lower Aurora. Tonight we’ll decide Carson’s fate and I’ve already taken the stance that no McIntyre member will join our lair,” I said.
“Kill him!” I heard the shouts coming from my lair members.
Rev stepped out from the shadows pulling Carson behind him. He joined me in the front and kicked the back of Carson’s leg and forced him to his knees as the lair grew quiet again.
“The choice of his punishment will reside with Rylee, your Drakaina,” I said and Rylee looked at me in shock.
I walked over to her and then leaned my head down, “he raped you Rylee, he stole six years of your life, whatever you decide, that’s what I’ll do,” I said to her softly.
I took Rylee’s hand and led her back to the front and Rev stepped back slightly. Everyone was watching Rylee as she looked at Carson. I could feel the hate and anger from her as she stared at him.
“You’re pathetic,” she said and Carson raised his head.
“I still dream of your screams,” he said to her and I stepped forward but Rylee stopped me.
“You should do to Carson everything they did to Lucas during their retribution and then I want to shoot him in the head,” she said.
“Rev,” I said and he pulled Carson roughly to his feet.
“It’ll be my pleasure,” he said and led Carson away from the lair.
“Dragonkin, at this stage we don’t know where Joseph is hiding and he’s made multiple threats to this lair. Keep your eyes open and stay safe, the threat is very real and we are all aware of what he does with young women, keep your daughters, sisters, and wives safe. We will find him and then I’ll kill him myself,” I said.
I followed Rylee up the stairs to her bedroom when we got home from The Drake. She looked tired but I still needed to talk to her. I had already told the family about Joseph’s threats and we were all on high alert.
“Can I talk to you for a minute?” I asked her.
“Can it wait until morning? I’m really tired Lucas and I’m not sleeping well,” she said.
“I’m sorry but it can’t wait,” I said.
She sighed and nodded and then grabbed her pajamas from her suitcase and headed to the bathroom. I sat down on the bed and waited for her to come back. Her hair was loose and she wore pajama shorts with a tight spaghetti strap top that just showed the bottom part of her stomach.
“What’s so important?” she asked me as she settled into bed.
“Joseph called me and made a direct threat to your life and their lives,” I said as I looked at her.
“What?” she asked me her eyes wide and I moved closer to her and took her hand in mine.
“I won’t let him hurt you that’s why I’m asking you to please just stay here until we find him,” I said to her.
“I know you won’t let him hurt us,” she said to me.
“So will you stay here, close to me, please?” I asked her.
“Okay,” she said and laid down on her back.
“Thank you,” I said and stood up.
“Lucas,” she said and looked at me.
“Yes?”
“I’m doing another ultrasound tomorrow,” she said.
“I’ll be there,” I said with a smile.
“Will you stay with me until I fall asleep?” she asked me.
“Of course,” I said and took off my shoes. I slid in behind her and then I moved right up against her with my arm cradling her stomach.
I listened as her breathing changed and I knew she had fallen asleep but I didn’t move. After an hour I got up and headed up to my bedroom to shower and change into pajamas. I headed back to Rylee’s room and climbed in behind her again and soon I was fast asleep.
“Lucas,” the voice said and I turned around.
I was standing in a field and the wheat reached my waist. I saw a figure in the distance and he waved me over. At first I walked slowly towards him and then I started running as he stood and watched me. He seemed so far away and it felt like I’d been running for hours when I suddenly crashed into him and he steadied me on my feet.
“Dad!” I breathed out and grabbed him into a hug.
“Be careful Lucas,” he said as he held me at arm’s length by my shoulders and looked at me.
“Of what?” I asked him.
“Joseph,” he said and I felt that hatred boil up in me.
“I’ll kill him even if it’s the last thing I do,” I vowed.
“I’m proud of you son, so very proud of what you’ve accomplished,” he said.
“I fucked up Dad,” I said to him.
“We all do,” he said as he gripped my shoulders.
“I miss you so much, I need you,” I said to him as I took his scent in. He smelled the same to me, mint with a hint of apple.
“I miss you too but I’m always watching over you, you’ll get there in the end,” he said.
“With what? Joseph or Rylee?” I asked him.
“I don’t know which but I know you’ll succeed at one,” he said and I closed my eyes briefly.
“Lucas,” I heard my mother behind me and my eyes widened.
“Mom,” I said and instant tears formed in my eyes.
“I love you so much,” she said as she wrapped her arms around me.
“I love you,” I said to her.
“Your father’s right, we’re so proud of you. You’ve turned into a great Sire and I know you’re going to be an even better father,” she said and I choked back the tears that ran freely over my cheeks now.
“Twins Mom,” I said to her as I smiled and my father placed his arm around my shoulder.
“You truly are breaking all the barriers of normalcy,” he said with a laugh.
“I’ve made so many mistakes,” I said and lowered my head.
“Yes you have and it’s okay to make mistakes when you learn from them,” she said and smiled as she kissed my forehead.
“I wish you were there with me,” I said.
“Just try not to swear so much,” she said and I laughed.
“Read the letter carefully Lucas, the one hidden in my office at…” my father said and my eyes snapped open as someone shook me awake.
“Lucas?” Rylee looked at me with concern in her eyes.
“What’s wrong?” I asked her sitting up.
“You were crying in your sleep,” she said and my hand went up to my cheek as I felt the wetness there.
“Sorry,” I said and laid back down.
“What were you dreaming about?” she asked me softly as she lay down with her head in the crook of my arm.
“My parents,” I said and her arm went around my waist.
“Do you miss them every day?” she asked me.
“Yes. I wish they were here now to guide me, help me fix everything I ruined, maybe I wouldn’t have messed up so much if I had them with me,” I said softly.
“Why were you so angry when you found out the babies were twins?” she asked me.
“It’s always been said that we couldn’t sire twins because of the power struggles with heirs so I immediately thought the worst and I wanted them to be mine so much that it hurt,” I said.
“At one point I really thought you hated me,” she said.
“I never hated you,” I said and turned my head to kiss her forehead.
“Why can’t it always be like this?” she asked me.
“Rylee, nothing in life is perfect. I can’t guarantee that we’ll never fight or argue or that I’ll never shout at you again but I can promise that I’ll never treat you the way I did, I can promise that I’ll never reject you and I can promise that I’ll be there for you as long as I live,” I said.
“I can’t guarantee that I won’t yell back or that I won’t fight with you. I can’t promise that I won’t ever call you an asshole again but for as long as you treat me the way you want me to treat you then I’ll stay with you,” she said and I turned towards her.
“I promise Rylee, never again,” I said and I kissed her.
“I promise to try harder too,” she said as we broke the kiss off.
“There’s only one condition though,” I said to her.
“What’s that?” she asked me raising her eyebrows at me.
“Can we please move back to our room?” I asked her and she laughed.
“Yes you take up all the space on this bed,” she said and I smiled.
“On second thoughts this bed is smaller…” I said and she shook her head as she laughed again.
“Hannah showed me your plans for the twins’ rooms,” she said.
“Those were private,” I said.
“I like your ideas,” she said and I smiled.
“Then we’ll get started immediately, we don’t have much time left,” I said and my mind started working overtime with everything that we still had to do. It would be a busy four and a half months ahead but it would all be worth it.
“Stella said we might be able to see the genders tomorrow,” she said, “what are you hoping for?”
“I really don’t mind either way, one of each would be great but as long as they’re healthy I don’t mind one bit,” I said to her.
