On Monday morning I followed Megan to work to make sure that Alex Redford had indeed left the territory and that the principal at the school was aware of his banishment. Megan didn’t acknowledge my presence and I felt uncomfortable as her colleagues leered at me. Most of them were human and I pretended not to notice them.
Back at home in the office Linda went through everything with me that needed to be done and we talked about Brenda and Cameron for a while. I was pleasantly pleased to learn that Linda had gotten Brenda to agree to really try to give Cameron a chance and not to reject him outright.
“Your father phoned twice while you were out saying that your cell is off, he wants you to call him back,” Linda said.
“Shit yeah it died, did he say what he wanted?” I asked her.
“As if I’m going to ask that man what he wants with you,” she said and laughed.
“Fair enough,” I said as I picked the landline up and dialed his number.
“This is Lucas,” he answered as Linda left the office.
“I’m returning your two phone calls,” I said to him.
“Why do you even have a cell phone?” he asked me.
“I forgot to charge it, what crawled up your ass?” I asked him.
“Check your fucking tone boy, I’ll knock your head off,” he said to me as I laughed.
“My humblest apologies dear father, whatever can I do to make it up to you?” I asked him.
“Smart ass, your mother’s what's crawled up my ass,” he said but I could hear amusement in his voice.
“Is this about that other Sunday?” I asked him.
“Of course it is, you need to send her flowers or some shit and then show up for dinner tonight,” he said.
“Fine, I’ll be bringing a friend,” I said to him.
“You still spouting that friend bullshit with Megan?” he asked me.
“It’s complicated,” I said.
“Tell me,” he replied.
“She wants me to prove that I can be faithful and that I won’t just use her and then leave her, she gave me guidelines on what I’m allowed to do and not do,” I said to him as he started laughing.
“This is just great,” he said through his laughter.
“Yeah laugh it up Dad,” I said to him.
“We’ll see you for dinner tonight then, I’ll tell your mother that Megan will be joining us,” he said and put the phone down as he laughed loudly.
“Your nine am appointment is here,” Linda said as she stuck her head into the office.
“Thanks show him through,” I said to her and stood up from my seat.
“Good morning, Sire Ryder,” he said and we shook hands.
“Morning, Sire Albert, please take a seat,” I said to him.
Linda offered him coffee which he accepted and we sat looking at each other while she made it and placed the cups down in front of us. She left the office again and closed the door quietly behind her.
“So what is the purpose of this meeting?” I asked him since he hadn’t said anything yet.
“As you are aware, I’m the Sire of Springfield, and we’ve noticed some vampire activity in the surrounding areas,” he said.
“And?” I asked.
“Since you’re the vampire hunter in these areas, we want to retain your services to get rid of them,” he said.
“What are the vampires doing?” I asked him.
“Nothing as of yet,” he said and looked away.
“So why do you want me to kill them?” I asked.
“They’re vampires, that’s what you do right,” he said.
“No, Albert, I’m not a mercenary and I’m not a vampire hunter. I don’t know where you heard that bullshit but the only vampires I’ve killed were rogue covens and vampires that threatened my life directly,” I said to him.
“Name your price and I’ll pay it,” he said to me as I looked at him in disbelief.
“I don’t hate vampires. If they attack your lair or break the international laws then you have a claim, until then, why are you so scared? They move in covens and not all of them mean you harm. They have a right to settle where they please and you can’t just order their deaths because of their species,” I said.
“So you’re not going to help me?” he asked.
“Who’s the coven master? Maybe I can look into their intentions,” I said to him.
“His name’s Basil,” he said.
“Okay, Albert, I’ll see what I can find out. You should be careful about who you ask to get rid of them, if they get wind of this it’s a legal cause to attack your lair,” I said to him.
“Thank you, here’s my number if you find anything out,” he said and I took his business card.
“I’ll call you if I find anything,” I said and we shook hands again. He left my office and I shook my head as I turned to face the windows at the back of my desk.
What Albert didn’t know was that I knew exactly who Basil was. I’d met him a few times not all of them under great circumstances but he’d made a grave mistake of making Basil his enemy. I hoped he kept his mouth shut because if Basil attacked his lair, he was as good as dead. I looked at my phone and sent Megan a text about tonight.
-My parents invited us to dinner tonight- Ryder
-Am I going as your friend?- Megan
-No, I thought we already talked about this- Ryder
-Just making sure, I hope we get dessert- Megan
-I’ll give you dessert- Ryder
-Looking forward to licking off the spoon- Megan
-You’re killing me- Ryder
-I know, keep your pants on playboy- Megan
I laughed at that, she was going to be the death of me, even though I was really doing this to myself. Linda and I kept ourselves busy in the office with work until Megan arrived home from work. Linda only smiled when I excused myself the moment Megan walked into the house.
“I’m home!” Megan yelled as I rounded the corner.
“How was your day?” I asked her.
“Good and yours?” she asked.
“Good, you should go get ready so we can leave,” I said to her.
“Yes boss,” she said with a smile as I followed her up the stairs.
We went our separate ways and I showered and got dressed casually in jeans and a t-shirt. I was waiting for her downstairs when Link arrived home and he quickly gave me feedback on the meetings he’d taken today. We were expanding our wings a little into the restaurant business and so far things were looking up for us.
“The chef I met with today is eager to run her own kitchen but she doesn’t have the means to open her own restaurant, so we’ve basically agreed on the deal and now we just need to put it all down on paper and sign,” Link said.
“That’s great Link, you did well,” I said to him.
Megan came down the stairs wearing a summer dress that stopped just above her knees. Her hair was loose and she wore almost no makeup. The bruises on her arms had faded a little and she pulled a light button up sweater on over the dress.
We said our goodbyes to Link and left the house to start our journey to Aurora. Megan told me all about her day as we drove and then I told her about Albert and his request to which she just snorted and then proceeded to tell me that there were good and bad people all over, as if I needed to have a talking to.
I opened the front door of my parents house and led Megan inside. I could hear their voices coming from the dining room and everybody stopped talking as we walked inside and I pulled a chair out for Megan.
“Geez don’t look so surprised, I said I’d come tonight,” I said as I sat down.
“Welcome Megan, have you met everyone since my son clearly has no manners tonight,” Rylee said as she smiled at Megan.
“Thank you Mrs. Grey, yes I know everyone,” Megan said.
“Please call me Rylee,” she said and Lucas gave me a look that said I was in for it tonight.
“So are the rumours true? Are you two dating?” Emily asked as Hannah shot her a look.
“Straight to the point as always Emily,” Megan laughed.
“Well is it?” she asked as I placed my arm on the chair behind her.
“We are,” I said and Megan gave me a look, “but we’re taking our time getting to know each other.”
“That just means you fucked up somehow and now she’s got you on a leash,” Chase said and Megan burst out laughing.
“Do you want to take this outside?” I asked him with a glare.
“I gather she hasn’t seen your…” he began but he quickly shut his mouth as he realized that our family was present.
“His what?” Megan asked as she looked at him.
“Nothing, Chase is just being a dick,” I said and he coughed lightly at my choice of words.
“No please share with everyone,” Lucas said as my spoon hit Chase on his forehead.
“It’s nothing,” Chase said as he rubbed his head.
“What I really want to know is how a nice girl like you ended up with a brute like my son,” Rylee said and I looked at her in astonishment.
“Really Mom?” I asked her as Megan laughed again.
“He did promise to behave,” Megan said and Chase laughed.
“See, she’s got him on a leash,” he said as everyone else laughed too.
“You’re one to talk, you were groveling at Melissa’s feet with your little STD test,” I said to him.
“That’s true, you did,” Melissa said as Chase glared at me.
“We should do this more often,” Lucas said with a smile.
