“Ryder.” I heard Lucas’s voice and turned around.
“Dad,” I said feeling nervous all of a sudden. The look on his face was one of worry mixed with sternness as he looked at my unharmed face.
“What’s going on? You said it was urgent. What the fuck did you do this time?” he asked me all at once as he glanced at Felix.
“Just because both of them are here doesn’t mean they’re in trouble,” Rylee said.
“Mrs Grey, a wonderful delight to meet you,” Felix said as he took her hand and kissed it.
“Knock that off,” Lucas said as he looked at him.
“I see where Ryder gets it,” Felix said as Rylee smiled at him.
“Why can’t you be nice like that?” Rylee asked Lucas.
“You want me to kiss other women’s hands?” he asked her.
“Don’t be an asshole,” Rylee said.
“And yet again I see where Ryder gets it,” Felix said as I chuckled.
“Cut the bullshit, why are you both here? What the hell did you two do now?” Lucas asked.
“Not me,” Felix said looking at me.
The adjoining room’s door opened and Elder Vic walked out first with a huge smile on his face. “Sire Lucas, Drakaina Rylee, it’s a wonderful, wonderful day!”
“Elder Vic,” Lucas said as Rylee bowed her head slightly in respect.
“Sire Ryder, the bond is noted down,” Elder Vic said.
“The bond? You marked some woman?” Lucas yelled at me.
“Dad, calm down, it’s going to be okay,” I said.
“How is this okay? What about Ava and your daughter? Who the fuck is this other woman and how fucking stupid are you, marking her?” His voice had reached a new level of anger.
“Lucas,” Rylee said as tears gathered in her eyes.
“I can’t belie …” Lucas’s words dried up in his mouth as Megan walked out of the room with Elder Michael and Elder Cliff. “Where were you? What happened?”
Lucas had Megan wrapped in his arms as he hugged her. I saw tears in his eyes that he was trying to blink away and Rylee was full on crying as she gripped my hand tightly.
“I found Megan, Dad,” I said as he finally let go of her. She was crying too, the happy kind of crying.
“I can see that asshole,” he said.
Rylee and Megan finally had a chance to hug as well and I could see Rylee was happy, really happy for me for the first time in almost a year. She was touching Megan’s face and then hugging her again as they both cried.
“What happens now?” Rylee asked.
“We’ve completed the bond and it’s been accepted.”
“And something else,” Elder Michael said with a smile.
“What?” Lucas asked impatiently.
“Megan has a dragon,” I said and Rylee gasped as Lucas turned towards me.
“A dragon? That’s never happened before,” he said.
“Quite right Sire Lucas, Kaida is the first of her kind that we know of, she’s a strong dragoness, graceful and beautiful,” Elder Cliff said.
“Megan’s mark also appeared on me,” I said as I pulled my t-shirt off and they all took a step closer to look at the white dragon emblazoned across my chest.
“That’s incredible,” Lucas murmured.
“I am the dragoness,” Kaida hissed as Megan’s eyes flashed yellow. I could feel Abeloth push forward as well at the sound of his bonded half.
It took almost three hours to tell them the complete story of how I’d found Megan, what had happened to her and how she had been taken. She didn’t know much, she had been in the dressing room, getting her wedding dress out of the cupboard when three men were behind her.
“They said I was the payment for your debt,” Megan said to me.
“What debt?” I asked her.
“I don’t know. They pulled a black hood over my head and the last thing I did was pull my ring off, hoping you’d find it and know that I didn’t leave willingly,” she said.
“Sharice brought me your ring, told me that you’d left,” I said as I thought back to that day.
“That doesn’t make any sense,” Megan said. “They weren’t with me at all that morning.”
“We need to talk to her, ask her why she told me that you told your mother that you couldn’t marry me,” I said clenching my fists.
“What do you remember after being taken?” Lucas asked Megan.
“Not much. I vaguely remember being taken to a house, a big house. I was in a room, by myself, I don’t remember how long. They drew blood, did various tests, but they didn’t hurt me. There was one day, maybe two weeks after I was taken … I overheard two men talking, they said that my double had been found,” she said frowning.
“I remember wondering what double they were talking about … that’s probably the girl you found that you thought was me,” she continued.
“Wentworth was right. This was planned, they took other dragonkin women to see how effective it’d be and then they took you to punish me,” I said.
“Who?” Lucas asked me.
“How the fuck should I know?” I asked him angrily.
“What’s going to happen with Ava now? She’s also pregnant with your child,” Rylee asked softly.
“We will have to inform her father that you’ve bonded with another,” Elder Vic said.
“That I bonded with my bonded half,” I corrected him.
“Does he have any cause for retribution over this?” Lucas asked them.
“As soon as I get back to Princeton, I’ll start divorce proceedings, we’ll obviously talk about the baby. One thing I do know is that she’ll probably be staying in Princeton with her bonded half,” I said.
“She has a bonded half?” Elder Michael asked. “And he hasn’t claimed her?”
“I think he wants to and with me divorcing her he can,” I said looking at Felix who had remained quiet throughout everything.
“Who’s her bonded half?” Rylee asked me incredulously.
“It’s Felix,” I said and his head snapped up to meet my gaze.
“This shit’s just getting crazier by the minute,” Lucas said.
“It was when I said she was beautiful, wasn’t it?” Felix asked me.
“It was pretty obvious afterwards because she’s not really,” I said.
“Piss off,” Felix said his fists clenching by his side.
“At least I’m not talking about your bonded half’s ass,” I said as Megan smiled and Felix’s stance relaxed.
“Granted but you have seen her naked,” he said.
“For fuck sake’s you two,” Lucas said.
“We’ll contact you with any further information once we’ve discussed this with Sire Anthony,” Elder Michael said.
“Thank you Elders. We’ll be taking our leave now,” Lucas said just as I opened my mouth to speak.
We headed back outside as Rylee held Megan’s hand and neither of them had stopped smiling. I hadn’t seen Lucas smile this much probably since Melissa had announced her pregnancy.
“Did Chase know?” she asked me.
“Of course Chase knew,” Lucas said as he watched me. I smiled but didn’t answer her.
“We’ll come over on the weekend, give you some time to settle down,” Rylee said with a smile and leaned into me as she hugged me. “We have your back Ryder, this is right. You didn’t do anything wrong.”
“Thanks Mom,” I said.
“Make sure you don’t let her out of your sight, ever again,” Lucas said with a smile.
“I don’t intend to,” I said as he slapped me on the back and then hugged me.
“We’ll deal with Anthony, I have your back on this,” Lucas said.
“I appreciate it, but I’ll deal with Anthony myself,” I said.
“Don’t be an idiot, me wanting to help you isn’t a bad thing,” he said.
“I know Dad, but I found Megan and I marked her and I won’t ever apologize for that,” I said.
“And you shouldn’t, my daughter’s back and I couldn’t be happier,” he said as Megan smiled at him.
“Now you just need to lay your final claim,” Rylee said beaming.
“Can Ryder at least impregnate her at their house?” Lucas asked her.
“Let’s go home,” I said as Megan slapped my arm.
“There will be no impregnating anyone else right now,” she said.
“But …” Rylee began as I interrupted her.
“Mom, we haven’t even gone home yet, can you relax? It’ll happen when it happens,” I said.
“There will be no baby before a wedding since I never got my ceremony,” Megan said.
“We can have you married next week,” Rylee said as I laughed.
“No, I want a big wedding, all our friends and all the people I love, I want it to be special like it should’ve been,” Megan said.
“Anything you want Megan, I’ll give you everything you want, forever,” I said.
“Okay, now put your balls back on,” Lucas said as Felix laughed and pulled his ringing phone out of his pocket.
“Felix speaking.” He answered his phone and walked away from us. His demeanour changed as he turned to look at me and I felt the hair on the back of my neck raise.
“What is it?” I asked him.
“It’s Ava. Peter’s at the house but Link says it looks like she’s going into labour,” Felix said.
“Shit,” I said as I pulled my phone out, it was dead.
“We need to leave, now,” Felix said as he pulled the door open.
