“Ryder,” Typhon almost growled my name.
“Lord Typhon,” I said and bowed my head.
“What have you done halfling?” he asked me.
“She needs to remember,” I said.
Typhon stepped closer to her and lowered his head and released a breath. She gasped and sat up straight. Abeloth separated from me, his face had a look of disbelief on it.
“I can’t believe it,” he said and disappeared into the dark recesses of the cave.
“Your bond is accepted,” Typhon said as Megan turned her head towards me.
“Our bond?” I asked him in disbelief.
Typhon's claw slashed across both our hands and I saw our blood rise and mingle in the air. I stood there in disbelief as I watched our blood swirl together and then become one. The wound on my hand healed and Typhon let out another breath.
“You’ve merged your blood, you are now bonded for life,” Typhon said.
“Ryder?” she asked as I went down to my knees and grabbed her as she cried.
“I’ve missed you so much,” I said as I clung to her, my own tears running down my face.
I don’t know how long we sat like that, crying together but I couldn’t get myself to loosen my arms. The relief I felt when she said my name was greater than even finding Felix alive. The peace I felt was indescribable.
“I …” Megan began when Abeloth returned with a look of amazement on his face.
“Ryder,” he said and then I heard tiny pebbles fall to the floor of the cave as another beast emerged from the shadows.
“Megan,” the voice hissed and we both turned towards the sound.
The dragon flew into Megan as she screamed and arched her back. The force was so great that I stumbled backwards and Abeloth roared loudly as a searing pain etched itself onto my chest. It burned and then faded as I pulled the t-shirt off and looked at the white dragon appearing over my heart.
“What the fuck?” I asked as I looked at Typhon.
“It is done,” he said and disappeared.
Megan had passed out from the pain and I lifted her shirt as she lay on her side. The silver white dragoness was splayed across her back and I felt awe and amazement as I looked at her. “Megan.” I brushed the hair from her face as her eyes opened gingerly.
“Kaida,” Abeloth said as he pushed forward and Megan’s eyes flashed yellow as she stood up.
“Abeloth,” Kaida said as they stood looking at each other.
My mark was visible on Megan’s neck, we were fully bonded now and she remembered everything. I could see it in her eyes and the way she looked at me. I could feel Abeloth’s nervous pacing and I blocked him out.
I pulled her towards me and kissed her, long and hard. When I pulled away and opened my eyes we were back in her living room. Megan pulled her hands away from my face and looked into my eyes. I could read every emotion there.
“Obviously it worked,” Felix muttered and I smiled as Megan turned to face him.
“You must be Felix,” she said.
“And you’re Megan,” he said as she grabbed him in a hug.
“Oh, this wasn’t quite what I expected,” Felix said.
“You’re family, Ryder’s brother,” Megan said as she let go of him.
“I like her,” Felix said as she laughed.
“Oh shit, Cliff,” she said and looked at me.
“Leave him a note,” I said and shoved my hands into my pockets. “And take that ring off.”
“I feel dizzy,” she mumbled.
“Lie down on the couch, you’re going to pass out,” I said to her.
“What’s happening?” Felix asked.
“She needs to fully merge with her dragon, it usually takes about twelve hours,” I said.
Megan was on the couch, her eyes closed and her breathing even. Felix sat down on the other couch and closed his eyes. “There’s no time to relax.”
“You said twelve hours,” Felix said without opening his eyes.
“Be ready to go in thirty minutes,” I said to him as he shoved his middle finger in the air.
I went upstairs, the hair on my neck rising instantly at the smell of another man in that room. I opened her cupboard and grabbed her clothes and shoes, stuffing them into a suitcase that I found in a small storage closet next to the cupboards.
I took her toiletries from the bathroom and closed the two suitcases. I left everything else. She didn’t need anything else, she had me and I was never letting go again. Forty minutes later I had already put her suitcases in the SUV and taken that damn ring off her finger.
“Let’s go,” I said as I kicked Felix’s foot.
“I’m up,” he said and looked at me as I picked Megan up from the couch.
We were almost on the highway when I took my phone out and dialed Chase’s number. I had left her house keys and her phone, the ring and had carried her to the car. Felix hadn’t said a word and Abeloth was just out of reach.
“Hey,” he answered his phone.
“Keep your expression blank, go somewhere where we won’t be overheard. This is big, it’s huge,” I said.
“Sorry, I need to take this call,” he said and I heard him walk up the stairs, probably to his office that was soundproof.
“Talk brother,” he said.
“Keep an open mind please because I found her,” I said to him.
“Found who?”
“Megan, she’s alive, but she didn’t remember me,” I said.
“Megan’s alive?”
“She is and a shitload of stuff’s happened as well, Felix and I were busy with a case, amnesia type cases, it doesn’t matter now,” I said to him.
“Where are you?”
“On my way home, Megan’s passed out in the back.”
“Passed out? Did you kidnap her?” he asked me.
“She merged with her dragon,” I said.
“What!” he yelled at me.
“Can you stop yelling?” I asked him loudly.
“Sorry, but this is all messed up, if that’s really her who the fuck did we find that night?” he asked.
“It’s her alright,” I said to him.
“I’m really happy she’s alive, but have you forgotten that you got married?” he asked me.
“Fuck. I marked Megan,” I said.
“What!” he yelled again. “I mean I get why, but what the fuck were you thinking?”
“I was thinking I just found my bonded half again, so fuck everyone! I don’t care! She was dead Chase, dead! No fucking way was I not marking her!” I said angrily.
“Who else knows?” he asked me.
“You and Felix,” I said.
“You’ll have to inform the Elders, mom and dad are going to freak the fuck out,” he said.
“And then I’ll have to tell her that I tortured her father to the point where he killed himself,” I said.
“I’ll always have your back, no matter what, call me when you know your plans,” he said.
“Just keep your trap shut,” I said as he laughed and ended the call.
We were six hours away from Chicago when Megan finally woke up. My eyes flashed yellow instantly as Abeloth reached out for Kaida and then he disappeared and gave control back to me. He had been quiet the entire time and I had woken up four hours ago.
“How are you feeling?” I asked her as I turned sideways in my seat.
“Not too bad,” she said and looked at Felix. “I guess we were both sort of dead.”
“Well, we couldn’t exactly leave Ryder to his own devices,” he said with a chuckle as she laughed with him.
“Ryder, I’m …” she said looking down.
“I’m so sorry,” I said as I took her hand.
“You came,” she said and began to cry.
“I’m never leaving you again, I promise,” I said.
“Are you being a girl again?” Megan asked me as I started to chuckle and Felix laughed loudly.
“I like her,” he said as she smiled and looked up at me.
“We have plenty of time for all the details,” she said. “First I want to know everything that’s happened while I was gone. Is the lair okay? Do my parents think I’m dead?”
“Yes and yes,” I said as she smiled sadly.
“Oh this is going to be interesting,” Felix said as he tapped his fingers against the steering wheel.
“He sounds just like Elio,” Megan said and looked out of the window. “Where are we?”
“Six hours before we reach Chicago,” I said.
“What the hell, Ryder! What about Cliff?” she asked me.
“Fuck Cliff,” I said.
“I think she has,” Felix said. “Ow.” Felix and I said seconds apart as Megan slapped both of us on the back of our heads.
“I left your ring and keys and shit and packed your clothes, he’ll think you dumped him and go on with his life,” I said.
“Asshole much?” she asked me.
“I take it back, I don’t like her, I love her,” Felix said.
“Why are we going to Chicago?” Megan asked suddenly.
“I need to tell the Elders about our bonding,” I said.
“Why?”
"Because he hasn't told you that he knocked up another woman and then married her," Felix said.
