At seven pm I drove the van to the corner of the street where Oliver had his travel agency. I gave it ten minutes and then started the van. The glass door opened and I saw Felix step out followed closely by Oliver.

They talked as Oliver locked the front door and I sped up as they reached the curb. Felix was hardly visible as he slid the van’s door open and pushed Oliver inside. I sped away from the curb the moment Felix slammed the door shut.

“What the hell are you doing?” Oliver yelled.

“Time for a quick chat,” Felix said and punched him so hard in the face that I heard his cheekbone shatter.

I pulled the van into an empty warehouse Cameron had said we could use and closed the roller door. The warehouse had recently been bought by Cameron’s biggest enemy and we intended to leave him a little present.

Felix had pulled Oliver from the van and we tied him to a chair as he remained unconscious. I squirted water from a bottle into his face and he gingerly opened his eyes and looked around in complete bewilderment.

“Oliver Carnegie, you have hereby been charged with the distribution of illegal substances to humans and have been found guilty,” Felix said.

“You’re not dragonkin,” Oliver spat at him.

“But I am,” I said as I emerged from the shadows.

“You’re a traitor to your own kind,” he said with disgust.

“My name’s Ryder Grey and I’ll be your executioner today,” I said as his dragon separated from him and roared at me.

“He just had to go there,” Felix said as he leaned back against the van.

“Some people are just overly emotional,” I said as I pulled my knife out and carried it with the blade pressed against my arm.

“Die you bastard,” Oliver yelled as his dragon flapped his wings and I started running.

I dodged the dragon’s tail and used it as leverage as I jumped on him. He flapped his wings again and tried to throw me off. I stuck the knife deep in his spine as I pulled myself up and the dragon roared in pain.

“You gonna help big guy?” I asked Abeloth.

“Are you asking for my help?” he asked me.

“Fine, I’ll slay this dragon all on my own,” I said as I pulled the knife out and grabbed the dragon’s horn.

I swung myself over the dragon’s head as he tried to bite me and stuck the knife deep in his neck and pulled down using my weight. The knife’s blade started cutting through the dragon’s thick skin and when I reached his most vulnerable place where his chest and neck met, I pulled the knife out.

I slid my hand underneath his scales and stuck the knife deep into his heart and pulled it out. I repeated the process until the dragon went down on his knees. Oliver was yelling obscenities at me but I ignored him. It wasn’t my first time killing a dragon without Abeloth’s help.

I looked the bleeding dragon in the eye as his blood dripped from the blade of my knife. “Go in peace dragon,” I said as I stuck my hand into his wound and ripped his heart out.

“Cadmus!” Oliver yelled as the dragon slumped down in death and Abeloth finally separated from me.

“Your turn human,” Abeloth said and stepped on Oliver.

“Holy fuck warn me next time!” Felix said loudly as we both looked away.

“Oops, did I overfuckulate your sensitive system?” Abeloth asked Felix.

“Over what?” he asked.

“Vampires, they have no sense of humour,” Abeloth said and merged with me.

The chair had been crushed and most of Oliver as well. Blood pooled everywhere and even I couldn’t look at the mess Abeloth had left behind. I took a picture of the bloody pile that was Oliver and his dragon as he started to shimmer and sent both to the Elders.

“Let’s go,” I said to a gagging Felix.

“There’s something seriously wrong with Abeloth,” Felix said as I started the van and drove the ten blocks to Cameron’s warehouse.

The keys were inside the truck and I nodded to Mike who lifted his hand in recognition. I saw him climb in the van and move it as we drove out of the yard and onto the street. We were both silent as I drove us to the airport so we could go home.

Four hours later Felix and I started the boat and headed back to the island. Felix hadn’t said a word on the flight or on the drive back to Belle Island. He didn’t know Abeloth like I did, didn’t know the viciousness that coursed through his veins and he had seen a side to him that even I rarely saw.

“You okay Felix?” I asked him as we walked down the dock.

“Yeah, I’m just shocked that Abeloth could be so …”

“I know, trust me, I know,” I said as he stopped walking and looked at me.

“Do you share that with him?” he asked me.

“When I thought Megan was dead, yeah. It was the same when I thought you had died too,” I said.

“I know we fight and we kill, it’s part of our lives. I just never knew how cold Abeloth was and that you had that inside of you,” he said.

“It’s hard to explain, we agree on a lot of things, but we have our own feelings and ideas,” I said.

“I can’t imagine having to live with someone else in my mind constantly,” he said.

“It’s not really that bad,” I said.

“Time to face my own inner demon,” Felix said as I smiled at him.

“Megan told me, they’re boys, it’s not like it’s going to get any better as they grow up,” I said and he laughed.

I watched him as he slowly walked over to his cabin and went inside. Max sat in the kitchen and he stood up when he saw me. “What are you doing here?” I asked him.

“I’ve been sleeping on the couch,” he said.

“Max, you don’t have to do that,” I said but on the inside I was grateful that he felt the need to watch over them.

“I know,” he said as he grabbed his phone and looked at me.

“Something wrong?” I asked him.

“I actually wanted to talk to you when you have some time,” he said.

“I have time now,” I said and sat down at the table.

“I met someone,” he said.

“You don’t look too happy about it,” I said.

“She lives in town. She thinks I’m weird because I keep following her around,” he said.

“She’s your bonded half, why does she think you’re weird?” I asked him and then realization struck. “She’s human.”

“Yeah.”

“Don’t give up hope. The more time she spends with you the stronger the bond will grow for her too. She’ll feel something, it’s a fraction of what you feel, but she’ll definitely feel something,” I said.

“So what do I do? How do I get her to get to know me?” Max asked.

“The old fashioned way, sweep her off her feet, find out what she likes and ask her out,” I said.

“It’s not that easy for me,” he said.

“Why not?”

“I’m not that popular with the girls and I don’t have the looks like you and Felix and this girl, she’s beautiful. She wouldn’t look twice at me,” he said.

“Wait right here,” I said and stood up.

I went upstairs and woke Megan. She smiled when she saw me and closed her eyes again. “I need your help downstairs,” I said as she opened her eyes again.

“This better be a life and death situation otherwise your life might be ending,” she said as she got out of bed and pulled on the robe I handed her.

“It is,” I said and took her hand as we went downstairs.

“Max,” Megan said as I pulled out a chair for her and she sat down.

“Max met his bonded half, she’s human though and finds his behaviour odd. He thinks he’s not good looking or popular enough to date her,” I said.

“Oh …” Megan said.

“You’re a woman, a hot one, so tell Max the truth about how you see him,” I said.

Megan chuckled lightly as she looked at me and then turned towards Max. She studied him for a few minutes and then asked him to stand up and take his shirt off.

“You don’t have to look that closely,” I said as Megan laughed at me.

“Max, you’ve got gorgeous brown eyes, you need a haircut though but you’re built like a pro athlete, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the way you look,” Megan said.

“You’re just saying that because Ryder asked you to be nice,” Max said as he pulled his t-shirt back on.

“I did not ask her to say those things,” I said.

“Max, if you weren’t a wolf and Ryder wasn’t in the picture, I’d definitely do you,” Megan said.

“What?”

“You’d do me?” Max asked with a smile on his face.

“Okay, you’re under house arrest, and you Max are fired,” I said.

“You asked for the truth,” Megan said as she gave me a pointed look.

“You didn’t have to be that honest,” I said.

“I’m fired?” Max asked.

“No you’re not,” Megan said.

“Yes he is,” I said.

“Even Ava said he’s hot, we check him out whenever he walks around without his shirt on,” Megan said.

“I’m never leaving the island again,” I said.

“Ava thinks I’m hot too?” Max asked.

“You, out! Start wearing a shirt!” I said as Max smiled and Megan laughed.
