“Can someone please explain what the hell is going on here?” Lucas asked as I stood shielding Megan with my body.
“You can’t punish Ryder for this rejection, he did nothing wrong,” Megan said loudly.
“And you are?” Elder Victor asked her.
“Megan Greer,” she said.
“The Elders decision is final young lady,” Elder Michael said.
“I have proof,” she said and Tia’s eyes widened.
“I hate you!” she yelled at Megan but I didn’t budge and she was hitting me out of frustration.
“Please come here,” Elder Cliff said to Megan.
I waited until Megan had reached the Elders and my father and she took her phone out. She turned the phone sideways so the Elders and Lucas could all watch the video she was playing for them. Lucas’s eyes found mine a few times and I could see rage in them.
“Elko, you may let Ryder Grey go,” Elder Cliff said when the video ended.
“We have seen enough proof that we support Ryder Grey’s rejection of Tia Malone. In the video it is clear that she had ill intentions with this bond and she had made use of dark magic to secure a bond between herself and Ryder. The bond would not have existed otherwise,” Elder Michael said.
“You bitch,” I heard from behind me and I saw Emily as her fist landed flush on Tia’s nose, breaking it in the process. Tia was screaming as she went down to the floor with Emily still on top of her.
“Who the hell do you think you are?” Emily yelled at her still throwing punches at her.
“Emily!” I said as I lifted her off of Tia and stepped away still holding her in my arms as she squirmed to get out.
“Take Miss Malone into custody and tend to her wounds, we well deliberate on a suitable punishment for her,” Elder Victor said.
“Calm down,” I whispered to Emily.
“I hate her!” she said angrily.
Rev walked over to us and stood looking at Emily as I lowered her to the floor. “That’s my girl,” he said and pulled her into a hug. The warriors helped Tia to her feet as she wiped the blood from under her nose and glared at Megan.
“I always knew you were in love with him! You were always jealous of me,” she yelled as they led her away.
Lucas had his hands on Megan’s shoulders as he spoke quietly to her. She was nodding her head as he spoke and then he let her go. He made his way down the stage to where I stood and stopped in front of me.
“We need to have a very serious conversation,” he said to me and walked away.
I turned back towards the stage and looked at Megan. She seemed uncomfortable as I watched her and we started walking towards each other at the same time. I reached her as she reached the last step and we stood face to face.
“This is now the second time that you’ve saved me,” I said to her as she started laughing.
“Don’t worry I won’t tell anyone that the great elite hunter needed saving from a girl,” she said and I smiled.
“Thank you Megan,” I said to her.
“It was the right thing to do,” she said.
“I think I owe you dinner or something,” I said.
“No you don’t, this is what friends do,” she said.
“So we’re friends now?” I asked her.
“Maybe, but don’t make me saving you a habit,” she said as she walked away from me.
I hadn’t even noticed that people had left the ceremony hall and now I stood there alone. All’s well that end’s well right. Abeloth was still laughing at me and clutching his stomach because of what Megan had said to me.
“Okay it’s not that funny,” I said to him and he started roaring with laughter again.
“Idiot,” I mumbled as I walked down the stairs.
I reached my car and found Leana leaning against it seductively. Great, this was just what I needed after tonight.
“I’ve been waiting for you,” she said and she smiled at me. I placed my hands on her shoulders and then pulled her away from my car so I could unlock the door.
“You really shouldn’t have,” I said to her as she laughed.
She pushed me against the car pressing her body against mine and leaned in as I turned my head away. Megan drove past us and I saw the shock in her eyes as she clearly misunderstood what was happening here.
“Now you can choose your own bonded half,” she whispered to me.
“It will never be you Leana,” I said as I pushed her away gently.
“Are you for real now?” she asked me suddenly, her whole attitude changing.
“Whatever gave you the idea that I was interested in you?” I asked her.
“Is there someone else you’re interested in?” she asked me suddenly.
“Yeah Leana, and it’s not you,” I said to her.
“It’s Megan isn’t it,” she said and crossed her arms over her chest.
“That’s none of your business,” I said and got into my car and drove away.
I arrived home to find Tia’s parents walking out of the front door with her suitcases and Lucas watching them with his arms folded across his chest looking really satisfied. They didn’t look at me as I walked past them.
“In my office,” Lucas said as I headed to the stairs.
I sat down on the sofa as he turned one of the chairs around to face me. He looked tired and angry and I wasn’t particularly in the mood for this conversation right now.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” he asked.
“When Megan showed me that video the first time, I was hurt and humiliated. I was angry but I still felt that bond, I still loved her and I wasn’t even sure what I was going to do until I did it,” I said to him.
“You could have told me that at home instead of running to the Lake House, hell you could have told me that when you came home that Sunday,” he said to me.
“I wanted you to have my back, which you didn’t!” I said to him feeling angry.
“You gave me no reason to have your back!” he said equally angry now.
“You’re my father! You’re supposed to have my back regardless of the consequences!” I said loudly.
“You know it’s not as black and white as that,” he retorted and leaned back in the chair.
“No matter how I felt I didn’t want to be responsible for her execution,” I said softly.
“What she did is unforgiveable, I took her in Ryder, into our home because I felt ashamed that you rejected your bond meanwhile she’s just a gold digger wanting to ride on our back and you said nothing,” he said.
“Yeah okay, maybe I should have told you and I’m sorry I didn’t but leaving in the end was the best thing for me,” I said to him.
“Joining that unit was the best thing for you?” he asked me with disbelief in his eyes.
“Yeah it was, it gave me a purpose, made me a man and gave me a new perspective on life,” I said to him.
“I hope you got that all out of your system now,” he said.
“Maybe, I don’t know,” I said honestly.
“You’re a Grey, you have responsibilities and like Chase you are a future Sire, I don’t care what you told your mother. I’m still beyond pissed off but I’m also very proud of you and it’s time to take your rightful place,” he said.
“I figured that,” I said to him.
“Is there something between you and that Megan girl?” he asked me.
“No, we went to school together. She’s actually Tia’s friend,” I said to him.
“Hmm, if you say so,” he said and I frowned.
“I already did,” I said.
“I’ll give you the rest of the week to fully heal and then it’s you and me,” he said.
“Great, can’t wait,” I said and he laughed.
“Shit you can be more excited you know,” he said as we stood up.
“Does this mean that I still have a bonded half out there?” I asked him as we walked out of his office.
“No, by replicating the bond she took that away from you. You won’t even know if someone you walk by was meant to be your mate or not, I’m sorry Ry,” he said to me.
“What about her? Won’t she feel it if she sees me?” I asked him.
“She would’ve felt the emotions that you had died, either the day she turned seventeen or when you and Tia fake bonded,” he said to me.
I walked to my room without another word and found Chase lounging on my bed. I sighed loudly as I lay down next to him with my hands under my head.
“That was some night,” he said as he turned his head towards me.
“I got saved by a girl, again,” I said and Chase laughed.
“Tia was right about one thing though,” he said.
“What?”
“Megan was in love with you in high school,” he said.
“Don’t be an idiot, no she wasn’t,” I said to him.
“Believe what you will, anyway I’ve got a hot date,” he said and pushed himself up.
“Have fun with your hand,” I said.
“Whatever cripple boy, I have a date with Melissa’s hand,” he said and closed my door behind him as I laughed.
“We should kick his ass,” Abeloth said.
“Oh we will, just give me two more days,” I said to him.
“I’ll show him what a cripple looks like,” he said sounding way too eager.
“We’re not crippling my brother,” I said to him.
