It was a week later and Felix and I sat on chairs with our fishing rods in the lake. I finished my beer and opened another one as I leaned back in my chair. It was a nice day out, Wynter and Milo were playing on the grass.

“Megan really said that?” Felix asked me.

“Yeah, she said they sit on the porch and check him out whenever he’s not wearing a shirt,” I said.

“There’s only one thing we can do,” Felix said as he looked at me.

“We have to kill Max,” I said with a laugh.

“We have to get this girl to fall in love with him,” he said.

“Oh, yeah,” I said as Felix laughed.

“Why would we kill him?” he asked.

“Your wife’s checking out another man whenever we’re not around,” I said.

“So’s yours,” he said.

“Hence the killing,” I said.

“He’s still a kid,” he said.

“He’s not that much younger than we are,” I said.

“Barely married two years and already they want younger men,” Felix said.

“We need to step up our game,” I said as Felix shook his head.

“So what do we know about this human girl?” Felix asked.

“Her name’s Bethany, she just turned eighteen, she works at the diner, poor background, smart as hell, can’t afford college even with the scholarship she got and going nowhere slowly,” I said.

“So why is she avoiding our boy Max?” he asked.

“Because he’s acting like a stalker,” I said and we both laughed.

“Grey,” I answered the ringing phone.

“You can see it’s me calling you asshole,” Elio said.

“What do you want Elio? I’m busy plotting with your brother,” I said as Felix laughed again.

“There’s a man here that wishes to use your boat to come and see you,” Elio said.

“What man? Who?”

“Apparently it’s quite beneath him to tell me, a mere commoner and vampire, what this is all about as he represents King Rexton de Haviland, King of Dragonkin,” Elio said as I sat up straighter in my chair.

“Send him over,” I said and ended the call.

“What’s that all about?” Felix asked as I stood up.

“The King’s messenger is on his way,” I said and pulled my t-shirt on.

“Shit … right, I’ll make myself scarce,” he said and he disappeared in a blur as I heard the motor of the boat.

I walked towards the docking station and waited for the man. He was dressed in a sharp suit and for a moment I wanted to smile since he reminded me of a bodyguard with his sunglasses and the blank expression on his face.

“Mr Grey, a pleasure,” he said as he docked the boat and walked towards me.

“And you are?” I asked him as his hand remained stuck out in front of him. My arms were folded across my chest and my expression was just as blank as his.

“Archibald Lewiston,” he said and pulled his hand back.

“What do you want?” I asked him.

“Right to the point. Can we talk in private here?” he asked me.

“Go for it,” I said.

“Is that your son riding a wolf?” Archibald asked me.

“What’s your point?” I asked him as I turned to watch Wynter riding Max’s wolf, Lexus.

“I’m just surprised that you can get along with wolves and vampires living in your territory,” he said.

“Yeah, I’m a surprising person,” I said.

“Right, I was sent by King Rex de Haviland. He is requesting your presence at the summer castle in France,” he said and produced an envelope from his jacket pocket.

“I take it this isn’t really a request,” I said and took the envelope he handed to me.

“No Mr Grey,” he said.

“It’s Chief Grey and I’ll look at it,” I said as I lifted the envelope.

“I will convey your acceptance to the King,” he said and nodded his head as he walked back to the boat.

I stood looking at Archibald Lewiston as the motor roared to life and he headed back to the mainland. Felix appeared a few seconds later and looked questioningly at me. “So what did he want?”

“The King has requested my presence,” I said and turned towards my cabin.

“I take it it’s not really a request,” Felix said.

“Aren’t you a smart one,” I said with a laugh and opened the kitchen door.

I placed the envelope on the kitchen table and headed upstairs to shower and change. I heard Megan return twenty minutes later as I lay on the bed with the towel still wrapped around me. I heard her footsteps as she walked upstairs and Wynter giggling as he followed her.

“How was your day?” Megan asked as she sat down on the bed and Wynter followed suit.

“Not half as boring as you think,” I said.

“Well my day was full of information,” she said.

“Yeah?”

“I met Bethany today,” she said.

“And?”

“She thinks Max is only interested in her for you know what that happens you know where when the lights are off,” she said.

“Are you talking about se.. ow.”

“Wynter, why don’t you go play in your room for a bit?” Megan asked him.

“No.”

“It’s okay, I get it now,” I said but Wynter had already run out of our room.

“So you’ll need to have a talk with Max,” she said.

“Well he does want that but it’s not all he wants,” I said with a smile as I pulled her closer to me.

“Hmm and you do too,” she said.

“It has been a few hours,” I said.

“I’ll get started on dinner and you can sort that out,” she said and threw her pillow on my lap.

“Please just block me out before you start your happy slapping dance,” Abeloth said and I burst out laughing.

An hour later we sat around the kitchen table eating dinner as Wynter threw his peas at my head. Megan was glaring at him and I tried to hide my smile. “Stop laughing,” Megan hissed at me.

I slammed my hand down on the table as Wynter jumped in his seat and looked at me with big eyes. “Eat your peas or else,” I said in a low voice.

“Yes Daddy,” he said as I saw the tears well up in his eyes.

“Nice, you made our kid cry,” Abeloth said and blocked me out.

Wynter ate his peas as tears rolled down his cheeks and every now and then he glanced up at me and I felt like an asshole as I watched him. Megan was glaring at me every time Wynter looked down and more peas landed on the floor than in his mouth.

“All done,” Wynter said with a proud smile.

“Yeah the floor isn’t,” I said.

“Well done baby,” Megan said with a smile.

“Time for your bath,” I said as I finished dinner as well.

“No!” Wynter screamed and jumped up from his chair and ran up the stairs.

“So are you going to tell me what that thick white envelope is all about?” Megan asked me.

“You need to be firmer with Wynter,” I said.

“Like you are?” she asked me.

“He listens to me,” I said.

“He listens to me too but I don’t have to threaten him,” she said as she stood up and gathered our plates.

“I don’t threaten him,” I said.

“Or else.”

“Oh come on,” I said.

“He’s not even two yet, leave him alone,” she said.

“Okay, fine,” I said.

“Now the envelope,” she said as she turned around from the sink and placed her hands on her hips.

“It seems like I’m going to France,” I said.

“Why?”

“Request from the King,” I said.

“King de Haviland?” she asked me.

“Yes.”

“What does he want?”

“I don’t know, I haven’t opened the envelope yet,” I said.

“Then open it!” she said loudly.

“Geez okay, keep your pants on,” I said.

“I thought you wanted them off,” she said and undid the button of her jeans.

“I do, forget the envelope and Wynter’s bath,” I said as she laughed.

“I’ll take them off in an hour,” she said and started cleaning the dishes. “Get Wynter’s bath ready and read whatever’s in that envelope while he plays for a bit, I’ll take over when I’m done here.”
