Alpha Wolf
*Silence.*
It consumed the entirety of the sitting room. It floated in the air, thickly and stung at my nostrils, almost suffocating me. It even flowed to Andrea and Chester who stood at the doorway, clearly tense at the arrival of the man sitting right across from me, staring right into my eyes.
Eventually, however, I grew tired of the unbearable silence, and the unbearable curiousity brewing in me as I stared into those hazel eyes of his. Could he be the "s" in 'siblings'?
"So, you're a relative of the Michaelses? How closely are you related to them, I mean, you even carry the same surname."
He chuckled and placed his expensive shoes on the mahogany coffee table. I grimaced, appalled by his disgusting behavior.
"Closely enough. I'm surprised Damon hasn't mentioned me."
He was not directly answering the question which frustrated me to the point of murder. Nonetheless, I tried to move on to the next question.
"And why have you chosen to visit us?"
He now smirked deeply, and then chuckled before saying, "For you, of course. I heard from the grapevine that Damon had found his mate. It was only confirmed this morning when I watched the Tessa show and a woman, dear Damon clearly described to be his sister, appeared. It could only have been you, Miss Spectra."
That, however, did not explain how he knew me by name, and so I questioned him on this matter.
"That, my dear, is for me to know, and for you to keep wondering about. I actually know quite a lot about you. Orphaned at twelve, a Vixen by nineteen, employed straight out of college by Damon due to your incredible results and the fact that you were his mate, left the company and this city, moved to Ravensdale, then to Unionville, Craystone, Lilac Hills, Farroway, and then finally, the small town of Terracotta, before returning here, to your hometown, due to the death of your friend and colleague, Loren."
By now I was practically horrified by the presence of this man but dared not speak as he continued.
"The only thing I did not know about... was the fact that you're and Alpha wolf, quite rare, if I do say so myself... especially in females... especially in humans." He then paused, stood up and began pacing around the room. "Do you know anything about Alpha wolves, or Alpha Blood?"
I shook my head no, and asked, "I never thought any information regarding the colour of my fur was of importance to me."
That was when his eyes bore into mine, and a look of shock appeared on his face.
"Unimportant?! How can you say that? It is probably the most important piece of information you will ever need to know, especially considering that it involves your family."
And by now, he had gained my full attention with that one word, "family".
"What do you mean?"
He hummed, walked towards a painting on the wall, and stared at it, as he said, "Before I tell you that, I think it's best to give you some background information on the legendary Alpha wolves. Your story does, in fact, originate from there. I'd like to take this opportunity to also inform you that there is quite a difference between an Alpha Wolf and an Alpha. A pack can be led by a wolf and not an Alpha wolf and, at the same time have Alpha wolves within lower rankings within the pack hierarchy. Thus, an Alpha wolf is more a breed of wolf than a Moon Goddess gift. The Michaels family, however, is one of the few families who have managed to keep the position of Alpha occupied by Michaels Alpha wolves. They practically breed them by having many children and, as a result, the Michaels family has become one of the largest, most powerful families, and one of the largest, most powerful packs. There are more Alpha wolves in the Michaels family than any other family-"
"But how does that even relate to me?" I asked, curious, but still anxious about the part I played.
"Alpha wolves come from a special gene known more informally as the 'Alpha Blood' gene. This means that it is solely inherited by wolves. There is no other way to attain it. It flows in your blood, Jasmine."
I gaped at him, unable to believe him. I was raised by a family of humans... right? I was one hundred percent human, that, I was partially certain of.
"But... how can that be? I have lived my life as a human?"
"Well, sometimes, the wolf gene becomes dormant if there have been too many human mates within your lineage. The gene must have activated when Damon turned you."
Impossible. Werewolf blood flowed in my family? I honestly did want to deny this man's allegations, but after everything I'd been through, and everything I'd experienced, I simply could not. Perhaps he was right. Perhaps I'd had this werewolf blood my whole life. I wondered if Damon knew about this, and I wondered whether or not he'd be truthful if I asked about it.
"...But that's not the best part. Alpha wolves also possess special abilities. Some can channel their rage into an increased size and increased strength while in their wolf form. Some possess unimaginable speed. Some possess the power of prophesy, others the ability to telepathically communicate with humans. And lastly, there are few, very rare Alpha wolves who are able to identify a werewolf’s mate before they have even met them by the particular smell of, said werewolf-"
"H-how does that work?" I asked, totally engrossed by Oliver's words, as if being pulled into another world.
"Well, let's say I have not met my mate yet. An Alpha wolf possessing the mate ability would be able to figure out the smell of my mate by discerning my scent from the other. Of course, it is only fully efficient if, prior to, or after attaining my scent, the Alpha wolf has attained the scent of my mate as well. It is quite handy and, probably one of the most romantic and envied of the abilities Alpha wolves possess."
He then fell silent, and turned towards me, before saying, "Great, now that I've told you about Alpha wolves and given you some valuable information on your family, I think it's time for the actual reason I came here. You see, what I told you was half the truth. I came here for you, and also to inform you about more than just your family. I need to make sure you know what kind of family you are involving yourself in."
I folded my arms over my chest and raised a questioning brow at Oliver who had now returned to a seated position in front of me. "And why would you do that?"
He sported a smile, "The Luna curse."
"Luna curse?" I asked.
He nodded. "Yes, every single Luna in the Michaels family has died by the hands of the Alpha. That is how the curse works, and if you're not careful, you will fall prey to its grasp as well."
But I was not fazed by his words, death was, after all, inevitable. Besides, Damon and I would have killed each other a long time ago, if that were the case.
"I'm not really buying it."
"Well you should. No Luna has ever been immune to the curse. It is built-into the position."
And that was where his attempt to frighten me truly did lose all of its glamour.
"Listen, and listen well you over-dressed, smug little asshole. If there is one thing that I am not, it is a Luna. I've already listened to all the various requirements and tasks it involves, and unfortunately, I am not interested in taking the position up. The only rule that will ever interest me is that of Alpha, and until I am offered the position, I will remain as nothing more than Damon's mate. So, if you thought I'd be scared off by some built-in curse, well then you have the wrong woman. Besides, it's quite low for Damon's..." I then paused before uttering, almost intentionally, "brother to try to instill such fear into me."
Oliver's eyes widened at my last word and he gazed at me for a while before furrowing his brows and asking, "he hasn't tole you yet?"
"Told me what?"
He then chuckled, "Well, I guess I will be the bearer of the news. Firstly, I am not Damon's brother, I am his cousin. More distinctly, the 'trouble' cousin. But he does have a brother. However, I think it would be best to inform you again, on the history of the Michaels family. Remember I told you that they exclusively breed Alpha wolves? It was one of the contributions to the deaths of the previous Lunas who produced until they could no longer. However, in the case of Ambrose, Damon’s maddeningly power-hungry father, he was the first Alpha to have a human mate. Unfortunately, unlike the other Alphas of the Michaels family, he used his wife as a punching bag, more than he used her as an Alpha wolf producer. As a result, after the birth of Damon, she became baron. So, in order to make up for this, and in a mad fit of power lust, he seduced and mated the Alpha's daughters of the second and third most powerful packs. After the birth of the two children, one an Alpha wolf, and the other a regular wolf, he obliterated the Alpha families and took over their packs, merging it with his own, another reason this pack is so unbelievably large and powerful-"
"So, all three siblings have different mothers?"
Oliver nodded, and I found myself taken aback. This was one family of deep and dark scars. It was a wonder Damon found it in himself to be so gentle. It was, in fact, unreal. A family that existed solely to keep the title of Alpha exclusively in the grasp of Alpha wolves.
"Three different mothers, but one father. The broken siblings, as they are known to the rest of the family. They are the most broken of the Michaelses, and yet the most powerful, with Damon being practically born into the role, given his strength and given he was the son of a long line of Alphas."
"So then, that meant that Damon's mother raised all three children as her own?" I asked, beginning to pick up on the reason Damon and London's relationship was sometimes so awful.
"That is correct. Three wolves raised by a single human with the kindest heart any Luna possessed. She was loved by everyone, except her husband."
The thought was heartbreaking. Everything was destroyed by one single man: Alpha Ambrose. The thought even made me angry, the fact that one power-crazed man was so selfish. The fact that this family used to value their Luna's as nothing more than baby-making factories. It was yet another reason I refused such a title. It should have been respected, but now, it was seen as nothing more than the role of a prisoner, a captive.
"So, are you ready?" Oliver asked, cutting me off from my thoughts.
I looked up at him, confused and asked what he meant by 'ready'.
"To hear who the final Michaels sibling is."
In truth I was more than ready. I was desperately hungry for it. Oliver had begun whetting my appetite since the beginning of this conversation, and admittedly I had willingly played along. But the more I thought about it, the more I thought about Damon. He wanted to tell me all of this... when he was ready. And here I was, letting Oliver destroy that. Perhaps that was the reason he was known as the 'trouble' cousin. He weaved all sorts of traps and tricks to get you hooked. But I would allow it no longer.
I stood up, ready to say no, when all of a sudden, the sound of familiar shoes against the marble tiles began sounding, bringing everyone, including Andrea and Chester who had been engrossed in the conversation as I was, out of their daze.
"Chester, you did not open the door for me, is something the matter?" He then paused a moment, before taking faster strides to the sitting room. And that was when I saw it, that deadly, enraged look on his face as his eyes met with Oliver’s.
"Hi there cousin, I was just about to tell Jasmine about your brother, Lucien Lucifer Michaels, or as she may know him better, Lucien Cyrus, King of the Vixens."
