DECADE ANNIVERSARY REUNION IN TWO DAYS AND TWO HOURS
NEW GOAL: CONVINCE MUM TO LET ME GO WITH HER(if I can), SNEAK AROUND.....FIND DAD(Shouldn't be hard)
The typist was too focused on the screen of her pink laptop and the plan she was documenting that she didn't notice her brothers sneak past her. It was way past their bedtime and they weren't supposed to be moving around but she wasn't exactly sleeping either. Let's just say she was making plans, necessary plans. Her mother was hiding something from them, something important and she was going to uncover it, she had to. Their future depended on it, it was a necessity.
AMBER'S POV
AFTER THE CARNIVAL
I had gone straight to bed as soon as I took off the clothes I wore to the carnival and had a hot bath. The kids were angry with me for leaving as early as we had but I wasn't ready to face them yet. But it seemed like they had other plans.
Unlike my mum who wouldn't wake up even if an earthquake was tearing the earth apart, I was quite the light sleeper. So there was no way my 10 year olds were going to sneak into my room, get my laptop and sneak out without me knowing. Maddie would have been able to achieve the feat though, that girl is way too smart for her age but Danny? Frankie? Absolutely not.
The look on their face when I woke up was priceless,
"What do you two think you're doing?" They froze and I struggled to not burst out in laughter. Frankie was the first to regain his composure,
"We needed to check something for homework but Maddie was using her laptop" Didn't really sound convincing enough.
"Homework?" They both nodded but Danny had guilt written all over his face, he wasn't really good at lying. I decided to play along, "But it's almost 10pm" I glanced at the clock by the bedside.
"Yeah, we won't take long. Sorry for waking you up mum" Frankie said and I decided to just let them do whatever they wanted. I had already ruined their outing, this was the least I could do. I nodded my approval and Danny gave me a quick kiss as they dashed out the door.
"You almost got us in trouble" Frankie whispered as they ran down the hallway. My children weren't exactly experts at whispering or sneaking around.
I drank a bit of water from the glass I always kept next to my bed and picked up my phone. Mel had left over six messages, I knew she wanted to say something when she came back with the kids and instincts told me it had something to do with Jay Harley. I texted her back asking if she was available to make a call, she called almost immediately after, she must have been waiting.
"Hey, Mel. You're still up by this time, that's rare" I teased as soon as I picked up. Melissa never stayed up late, she had this "early to bed, early to rise" policy and nothing made her stay up late. To think she never went to bed early when we were teenagers cause she was always attending parties. People really change when they grow up.
"Yeah, Ken had to go for a business meeting at Connecticut. I was helping him pack and I wanted to talk to you" She answered. I looked at the clock again, it was 10:21pm.
"Connecticut? By this time?" Why was he travelling so late? It seemed my friend was thinking the same thing,
"I have no idea why he's traveling so late or why he's even traveling at all" I could hear Mel stifling back tears and I wanted to hold my friend so badly.
"Did you guys get into another fight?" This time around she snuffed and I knew she was at the verge of crying. "Do you want to come over here? You can bring the kids if you like. The triplets are still awake, they'd be happy to have Stacey and Ken Jr around" There was a pause and I waited patiently,
"Okay. We'll be there in an hour" She finally said and I gave a sigh of relief.
"I'll be waiting for you, don't take too long okay? Our little community is crawling with different people right now, let's not take any chances" She agreed,
"I know for a fact that there are people who came to just see Jay Harley and Daniel Fletcher" she laughed and I shrugged. What was special about a bunch of basketball players that were only good in drinking and womanizing.
"Speaking of Daniel Fletcher, I saw the stupid man tonight" I recalled the look on Mel's face when she came with the kids. She must have spoken to him, no wonder her mood was ruined.
We spent two more minutes talking about the carnival and a little bit about the upcoming reunion. The basketball team weren't the only ones who were going to be present, the cheerleaders were going to be meeting up for the first time in a decade. I was as excited as I was dreadful about the reunion, what if things didn't go well? I can only wait and see.
Ken called out to her and she told me she had to go, I told her to be strong as she went off to finish packing Ken's things and to wake up the kids. It was an hour drive from hers to mine and it was already late.
Being a mother wasn't easy, that much I knew of but being a wife along with it was just something I respected Mel for. It wasn't easy raising my triplets as a teenager after my mum disowned me and left me to fend for myself but Mel had been my backbone ever since.
Ken wasn't a bad guy or anything but alot of things have changed since Mel had Ken Jr and I had noticed the changes my very jovial friend had undergone alongside it. Mel was still sweet and outgoing and down to earth but I could see through the facade she was showing to the world. I just hope it works out for her cause I know how much it sucks to have your kids grow up without their father.
