Chapter 36

JAY'S POV
I was already getting ready to yell at the person who had the audacity to open my door with such force like that but my anger was replaced with irritation the moment I saw it was who it was.
'Why did you tell your mum you weren't going to pull through with the wedding?!" Eve yelled as she stood at the entrance of the office. Pauline who was with her, had a sinister smile plastered on her face, which if I would admit, suited her way more than her usual smile, since it gave her the look of pure evil that she obviously was.
I sighed slightly as I removed the phone from my ears, 'I am not having this conversation with you, I'm busy, leave" I told Eve as I turned my attention back to my call, after two consecutive Hellos, I realized Amber had hung up already.
That was just perfect, now I had no other choice but to deal with my evil step sister and the most annoying woman I had ever met, Eve James.
Pauline walked in and took a seat directly opposite me, 'Your office looks nice" she complimented as she spined the chair around with the new smile still on her face. I turned my attention to Eve and noticed she wasn't in a good mood, it didn't matter though, cause I didn't care.
'I asked you a question, Jay. Why would you say such a thing to your mother?" She asked with a fake sad face, I was ready to ignore.
'Probably because I don't know you?" I shrugged to prove my point. She wasn't thrilled about my response as she turned and stormed out of the office. I wasn't wrong though, I knew close to nothing about Eve James.
I tried to weigh everything I knew about her oblivious to the fact that Pauline was still in the room. I did a mental note, Valedictorian of our set back then, star of every play the drama team put together, absolutely fluent in over four different languages, beautiful and sassy and always got whatever she wanted at the expense of her minions she went everywhere with back then.
Most of the things I knew about Eve were gotten from the information I had from 10 years ago and the only recent ones were the fact that she was now an actress with a classier life than before and quite a lot of money which had probably gotten to her head but still very much of a bitch amidst all these.
Pauline cleared her throat bringing my attention to her, 'You should be nice to Eve, we need her you know" she said still wearing that annoying smile. I didn't know cause no one was telling me what was wrong with the company and why we needed Eve.
'You've finished going through the files?" She pointed to the files on my desk and i shrugged. I had been preoccupied with other things.
'About the other night, I.." I raised a finger, cutting her off,
'I honestly am not interested in whatever you have to say, Pauline" I said as she stared at me, 'You humiliated someone that hadn't done anything to you, not one thing" I couldn't contain the anger I was feeling inside me any longer.
'You think only about your self and I was okay with your self centeredness for real, I was, I didn't give a shit about it but embarrassing someone who wasn't even in your way? Bruh, you're completely something else so don't even try to act otherwise"
She tried to defend herself by shifting the blame to Eve, 'It was all Eve's idea, I just went along with it" she blurted out. Shake my head.
That even made me angrier, 'You're a grown ass woman, Pauline. I know you, you don't answer to anyone" She was about to say something in her defense again, when i raised a finger up to silence her, 'It doesn't matter, I don't care" I said matter of factly.
A knock rang on the door as Davis poked his head through it, 'I've found two capable candidates for the position, Mr H. Would you like to start the interviews?" He stated with his signature smile on his chubby face.
Pauline walked out of the office as I stood up from my chair, almost pushing Davis out of the way. It was a good thing she had left, there was no point in her staying back, I was done with her. I returned Davis's smile as I walked to the door, come to think of it, it actually wouldn't hurt to do the interviews.
AMBER'S POV
Yes! Eve James!
But why was Eve James yelling at Jay in his office but most importantly, why was she talking about marriage?
'Do you think something is going on between Eve and Jay?" Mel had a knack for always voicing out my thoughts and to be honest, there were times I wonder if she was actually psychic or I was just very easy to read.
I shook my head as I stood up from my seated position, the kids had all cleared out of the living room and I wondered what they were doing in their room, if they were actually in their room.
My answer didn't satisfy Mel, 'It seems you spent time with him at the reunion party, he didn't say anything?" She raised her eyebrow at me and I sighed, there was no stopping Melissa.
'I wouldn't call what we did spending time together, Mel" I said as I rolled my eyes. Jay Harley had saved me from drowning and the only words we had said to each other was thank you and don't mention. I know right.
'Then what would you call it?" She persisted with that hint of excitement that usually spelt trouble. It usually didn't end well for me whenever Mel got curious about something so I try to avoid the whole the whole situation but there wasn't any stopping Mel.
She followed me to the kitchen where I wanted to make a cup of coffee for myself, 'What happened between the both of you, Amber? You couldn't possibly tell me you guys just sat down quietly for hours till you got tired and then he drove you home" she rambled on as I grew uncomfortable and testy.
'Tell me what happened, Amber. C'mon" I was tired of her persistence and really needed coffee to put my thoughts together in one place, they were threatening to spill out of my head but one important one, slipped out of my mouth before I had a chance to rein it in.
