Chapter 66

JAY'S POV
'Yes, sir?" Davis poked his head through the door almost a minute after I had called for him through the intercom they had provided for me. My bind was a load of jumble after the call with Daniel, apparently, I had missed a serious event, so serious, I even had missed calls from Amber.
I dropped my phone with a crash on the table, 'I need you to do something important for me" I said, already irritated from the poor network connection in the office. Was it the network or was Amber upset and didn't want to pick up.
Davis didn't even wait for an invitation as he walked straight to the chair opposite me, 'What's going on, Mr H? You've been distracted all day" he answered, ignoring what I had said earlier. I knew he was worried but this wasn't the time for questions and answers.
'I'll tell you later, for now, I need you to cancel all my meetings and direct all important calls to my cell" Davis nodded as I gave out the instructions.
'There's an important meeting that I can't cancel, Mr H" he looked apologetic and I frowned, it was probably the meeting with the evil twins.
'Peter and Pauline?" I asked even though I knew the answer to the question. Davis just nodded slightly and my frown deepened, I had tried to avoid any meetups with the twins but I guess fate has her own plans in store for me.
I tried Amber's cell for the 10th time that morning but it kept going to voicemail. I couldn't place my mind on one thought anymore, there were several others.
'Had something happened to her?"
'Was she at the hospital and couldn't pick calls?"
'Had she been kidnapped?"
A slight knock on the door pulled me out of my head, as much as I wanted to race down to Amber's, I had to deal with the hassles of running a business. You'd think I would have gotten used to the hassles by now, but when you have a competent person like Ken Duke in your company, there's only a few things you have to worry about asides women.
Peter annoyingly cheerful voice greeted me as I looked up from the files I had most definitely not being going through, it was really going to be a problem when Mum realizes I had been going to the office for about a week but yet, had absolutely no idea on what was going on in the same office.
'You seem a little distracted, should I come back later?" Peter asked with that annoying smile he always had plastered on his face. Oddly enough, it almost resembled Davis's.
It wouldn't do to make him think I was vulnerable, 'No, it's fine. The meeting isn't till later, what can I do for you?" I adjusted in my seat and extended a hand towards the chair opposite me, as a way of ushering him a seat.
Peter seemed like he was about to take a seat, then decided against it, 'No," he said as he shook his head slightly, 'I don't intend to stay long, I just wanted to let you know Pauline wouldn't be available for the meeting" he gave me a slow bow, mockingly and before I could gather my thoughts together to ask why, he turned and left.
Pauline wasn't one to miss a meeting not to talk of one which would give her the opportunity to say whatever she wanted about me and also taunt me at her leisure. It seemed like something was up with her but we didn't have the kind of relationship that would enable me make further enquiry about her situation.
With the distraction in form of a brother, out of the way, I dialed Amber's phone again. It didn't go to voicemail this time around but the operator informed me, she was on another call. I breathed a sigh of relief, if she was talking to someone else on the phone, it meant she was fine and I should find a way to calm myself before I ended up having a heart attack.
The meeting was scheduled for 1pm and it seemed like the clock was terribly against me as I kept on glancing at it. Only a few minutes had passed since the encounter with Peter, I was slowly losing my patience and mind altogether. Only because the first ringtone had gotten on my nerve, Giveon's July 16th dragged my attention to my phone.
I had no idea Pauline even had my number until I saw her name pop up on my screen,
'Hello, Jay" she said immediately I picked up the call. A thousand things were running through my mind but I decided to let her talk.
'Hi, Pauline, Peter had told me already, I know you won't be around" I blurted out without giving her a chance to talk, I was doing her a favor anyways. Wasn't that the reason she had called?
I heard her sigh loudly, 'That's not the reason why I called you, Jay" I knew she couldn't see me but it didn't stop me from raising my eyebrow quizzically. Why then had she called me?
'Okay? Why then have you called me?" I voiced out my thoughts and waited for a response. Almost twenty seconds later, it came but in a very hushed tone, I literally had to strain my ears to hear what she was saying.
'I need you to do a favor for me. I don't know who else to go to that's why I'm here"
'A favor? What's going on, Pauline?"
'I need you to help me go to Oxford Oaks middle school..." Being impatient wasn't my biggest strength but if you were the one that was being put on suspense like this, you would have flipped.
'What are you talking about, Pauline. Get straight to the damn point" Okay, at that point, I just wanted her to get it over with.
'I need you to help pick up my son"
