Chapter 58
STACEY'S POV
'Thanks for the ride, Mr Fletcher" I had said politely as the car stopped in front of the house. I had also tried to talk Daniel Fletcher out of bringing us home but apparently, adults were more stubborn than children. I got one of his signature smiles,
'You're welcome, cupcake. Do you think your mum is around?" He had asked while leaning out the passenger side to take a look at the door. I smiled involuntarily, adults were also quite cuter than children, the only difference is that, they don't realize it and the ones that do, try to shove it down. Its crazy, who doesn't like cuteness?
Almost as soon as I got out of the car, mum appeared at the door, hand on her waist and both a smile and a frown on her face. Yes, she had a smile on that looked like a frown, I knew it was a smile cause I knew the woman and her habits but Daniel Fletcher could probably had seen a frown. The frown was meant for him anyways, it wouldn't have had its effect if he hadn't noticed it.
Mum was wearing a flower pleated skirt with a tank top and I wondered not for the hundredth time, if I wanted to make an attempt to count, why anyone would want to hurt such a beautiful, innocent soul. Love makes you do the craziest things, so I've heard and had also experienced first hand but was it love dad felt for her?
After Mr Fletcher drove out of the compound, I headed straight to my room with the intention of writing in my journal. The day had been too eventful to not leave details about it down in my special place. The book had a few tears from the way the stupid, self acclaimed bully of Oxford Oaks middle school, Luke Clinton, had handled it and it annoyed me but also gave me tingles.
It was hard for me to think about Luke without remembering the encounter with Frankie. I had made the move but why did it seem like I had done something horrible? I knew I didn't wait for a response, that was strictly out of impulse but was I even ready to face rejection? It was better I delayed it, wasn't it? I wasn't sure anymore.
Mum had poked her head through my door as I placed the glass of hot cocoa on the bedstand, 'Can I talk to you for a second, baby?" She had changed from the tank top outfit to a sleek dinner dress and I wondered why she had, dad wasn't due till the next week.
I gave her a smile as I sat up on the bed, 'Sure, mama. What's the matter?" The look on her face told me she was struggling to say something. I wanted to tell her then and there that I knew about the divorce threat but decided it was best to let her talk first.
'There's something I wanted to tell you about your dad and I but I'm having issues with English right now" She chuckled and I did a little laugh. This was harder for her than I had thought but it wasn't my place to help relieve her. She sat on the bed next to me and ran a hand through my hair,
'I love you so much, baby. You and your brother are the most important things to me in the whole world and I'd do anything to protect you. Anyth.." Her phone ringing, cut her off and I knew who it was without even looking at the caller's ID. Her hushed tone confirmed my suspicions.
Mum gave me a half grin, 'I actually came here to kind of ask for your permission to do something or should I say go somewhere" she said with a sparkle in her eyes that I hadn't seen in a long time, her hand still in my hair. It warmed my heart to see her all excited, I didn't even wait for the question,
'He's waiting for you. Go have fun, mum" I giggled as she threw her arms around me. Marriage can sometimes be a curse more than a blessing, so I've heard Aunt Amber say but today, I knew Aunt Amber wasn't just saying it cause she hated men, well, just a little bit but you get my point.
Marriage wasn't exactly a bed of roses and mum had been going through a lot lately, she needed the distraction even if it was for one night. I wasn't a fan of Daniel Fletcher and I really didn't understand their history, mostly because mum always made it seem like she hated him the most in the world but I was glad she was going to get a breather. She needed one.
The phone rang again as she detangled herself from me, this time around, I saw the caller ID, Aunt Amber. Mum answered as she got up to leave the room,
'Hey, Am," she stood in one spot for about 10 seconds and then laughed as she said, 'I'll give you details when I'm back" there was a pause. 'Yeah, the kids are fine......no, Clary is around" another pause. 'I love you too, yes, bye" She hung up and turned to me,
'Take care of yourself okay, I won't stay long" she smiled and walked out. I was sure her smile ha mirrored mine cause I felt I was smiling too. I was glad she was finally going to have fun after the tedious week she had had, I was glad, really.
But as I raced out the door and down the street, barefooted and with Ken Jr holding on to my hand and running along, I realized I may had probably made the wrong decision by saying yes to her. I may had finally ruined things for her and if we didn't get away on time, I would be ruining things are every one of us.
