Chapter 43
JAY'S POV
Take a deep breath, Jayden. This isn't something you've not done before, just go in there, talk to her, say hi to the kids and come right out. Doesn't sound hard, does it? Just breathe and try it out, Jay. It will be alright.
A knock sounded on the window of the passenger side and i turned my attention towards it to see a smiling Daniel. Great, how bad could it be? The door clicked open as I flipped the switch, Daniel bounced into the car wearing his brightest smile. I knew what he was going to say even before it came out of his mouth,
"You haven't gone into the house?" He asked with his eyebrows raised at me and I couldn't resist the urge to roll my eyes. Trust Daniel to make a mountain out of a molehill.
I realized I still had my seatbelt on so I removed it, picked up my phone and got out of the car with Daniel doing the same. I had no idea why I had told him I was at Amber's and why he had rushed down when I told him Melissa was around also.
"Be in your best behavior, Daniel" I scolded as we walked towards the door of the house. I was anxious even more than the last time and I started fondling with my tie to keep my palms from getting sweaty.
Daniel looked at me with feigned hurt, "When have I ever behaved poorly?" A wink followed the question and I mentally gave myself a slap on the head for allowing him to follow him to see Amber. Well, the kids too, no, mostly the kids. Or were they an excuse for me to actually see Amber?
The doorbell rang before I had a chance to stop Daniel, he gave me a huge smile and muttered, "You're welcome" I had a frown I quickly turned to a smile as the door swung open to reveal the youngest of the triplets, Maddie.
"Hello, I'm here to see your mum" I returned the broad smile she shot me and Daniel added from behind me, "Melissa too" Maddie giggled and i repeated his request, "Melissa too"
The door creaked open as she let us in, I wonder not for the first or second time how cozy Amber's home was but also still very tiny. Growing up as the heir to a massive fortune, I always felt you had to have so many different property, butlers (which were my personal favorite) and workers at your beck and call before you would be comfortable but Amber's home gave me a new definition of comfort.
Maddie offered us seats as she almost ran out of the living room towards the stairs. It was strange how Amber's triplets reminded me so much of her and surprisingly, myself.
"Is it me or does she have the same color of eyes as you?" Daniel asked pointing out something I had been wondering about too. It wasn't just the eye color, sometimes it was even their smile, it looked like I was looking at myself in the mirror sometimes. Weird.
AMBER'S POV
"Mummmm!!!" I heard Maddie scream from downstairs and I groaned as I closed the laptop I had been searching on. The convenience store hadn't laid me off yet but I knew I needed a better job, one that paid more than what I was getting from the store. My triplets weren't five anymore and Maddie had started showing signs of early puberty which meant my expenses were about to hit the roof with increments and I needed a better job.
Turns out you need a college degree to get employed into most jobs available on the internet but that was something I lacked which practically sucked by the way. College was one of the places I wasn't opportune to go to, yeah, having kids changes the course of one's life faster than you can say Jack Robinson.
"Mummmm, you have visitors!!" Maddie yelled again and I felt my head was going to explode with all the yelling. Its the little things you know, its the little things that remind me that my triplets weren't as matured as they acted. They were most definitely still children and their screams were a constant reminder of that brooding fact.
I glanced towards the bed to see if Maddie's screams had woken Mel up but I smiled to see she was still sleeping soundly. A whole lot had changed since highschool but Mel practically remained the same except for the fact that she was now a mother of two and a wife of an asshole. Marriage must be tougher than I had thought, Mel was a living proof of that.
I had seen my friend grow from the carefree life of every party to a timid woman who kept on putting up with her cheating husband's crap. Did she know he was cheating? Probably. But did she want to do something about it? Nope. Turns out you have to be a man's doormat for the marriage to work. Bleh, couldn't be me.
As I walked towards the stairs to go attend to whoever had decided to pay me a visit, which was weird by the way, I never got visitors except Mel, her kids and Mrs Carol and they were family. So who was looking for me? My mind drifted to the meeting I had to attend with the principal in regards to Frankie and i heaved a huge sigh.
My life wasn't exactly perfect but at least I had kids who loved, obeyed me and stayed out of trouble or used to cause apparently, Frankie doesn't do that anymore. Parenting is hard.
"Maddie, why were you yelling? And who is looking for me?!" I yelled as I came down the stairs headed for the living room. Everywhere was oddly quiet and i was ready to yell at Maddie again, for pranking me and making me leave what i was busy with, when I heard an unfamiliar familiar voice answer me from the living room.
