Chapter 34
AMBER'S POV
'You really should give him a call to thank him for bringing you home, Amber"
'Yes, mum, you should give him a call to show your appreciation"
'For the first time in my 10 years of living on this earth, I agree with Frankie. Give the man a call"
'How bad could it be?"
Six pairs of stunning blue eyes stared at me from across the desk as I struggled to get some applications in place for the job I was searching for. It wasn't just the triplets, Mel had been bugging me to place a call over to Jay Harley to thank him for bringing me home the previous night.
There was a lot to thank Jay for if I was going to be honest but that part of the story was going to be yet another secret I would be keeping from my family and it made me uneasy. I wasn't a very secretive person but I needed to do this even though it was very hard for me.
The kids usually went over to Mel's every Saturday but with what had transpired between her and Ken, I suggested the triplets stayed back at home for the weekend. I called to inform her of the change of plans and she brought her kids to my place instead.
'Just go ahead and call him, it won't kill you" Mel pointed out and I frowned. Of course calling Jay Harley wasn't going to kill me, I wasn't phoning the Soviet union and it's not like one phone call to the man that dove into a flowing river to save me would kill me when the water didn't.
I sighed in defeat, 'Fine, I'll call him. Can you excuse me though?" I knew talking to him with the kids around wasn't going to go well so I didn't want to engage in it at all. Mel wasn't having any of it,
'Why can't you talk to him with us present?" I had never wanted to strangle my best friend so much before. The kids mirrored the look she was giving me and I heaved another sigh of defeat. They win.
After Maddie found the jacket in my room earlier in the morning, the note had slipped out and she almost fell down the stairs rushing to show the brothers she had intentions of strangling earlier, her find.
In the note Jay Harley left for me, he had written his number along with a few words I had gotten beet red in the face when Frankie read them aloud. The kids kept on bugging me to place the call and I was hoping Mel would be on my side but I was terribly wrong.
We all sat on the couches in the living room as I dialed Jay Harley's number. It rang once, twice and even thrice but there was no response, I was happy about the outcome, to be honest, but my triplets looked as if they were going to burst out in tears and I felt bad.
They idolized Jay Harley, well not all of them, Frankie to be precise, totally idolized Jay Harley and I couldn't begin to imagine the joy he had felt when he realized there was a way to communicate with his idol again. Now, his idol wasn't picking up the damn phone. I gave my babies a sympathetic look but it didn't look like they were about to give up.
Maddie voiced out their resolve just as I was about to put the phone down, 'Call him one more time mummy, who knows, four might be the lucky number" Who knows?
'Hello, who is this?" Lucky number indeed.
JAY'S POV
'Hello, who is this?" I asked immediately the phone started ringing again for the fourth time. Who calls someone four freaking times? The number wasn't one I could recognize and I was already irritated from scattering the office looking for a phone that was supposed to be in my pocket. Stupid suits.
'Hi, uhm, it's Amber Swift" the voice squeaked out after like a minute of silence and I felt a strange rush of adrenaline.
I cleared my throat that wasn't in any form of discomfort just to make my voice clearer, it usually worked right?
'Hi, it's so nice that you decided to call me. I was scared you wouldn't see the note since I just tucked it into the jacket" I heard a little giggle as I talked and realized there was a chance the triplets were with her.
It took another whole minute and series of shushing on her end before she replied, 'Yeah, I saw it. Thanks for leaving such positive words" another giggle.
I did another clearing of my throat, 'It's no biggie, I'm glad you're fine now. It is also very nice that you called me" I stumbled on my words. I didn't even know why I was feeling so anxious but I knew my palm was probably sweaty as hell.
'Mum, can we say hi?" Maddie's voice sounded in the background and I couldn't help the smile that spread across my face. Amber Swift's triplets were the most adorable set I had ever seen.
Amber's smooth voice clouded the little girl's as she responded, 'Mr Harley might be busy honey, you'll talk to him later" There was a little grumble from the girl and series of muffled protests which I concluded were from the boys.
'But, it wouldn't hurt to just quickly say hi" another person spoke in the background and I wondered how many people were actually with Amber as she was making the call.
I was about to tell Amber to give the phone to Maddie so I could say hi to the siblings altogether when the door of my new office opened abruptly and a very angry Eve appeared at the door accompanied by an oddly smiling Pauline.
