Chapter 99

JAY'S POV
As much as I wanted to question Amber in regards to the information Noah had given me, I knew it wasn't my place to do so. The only relationship I had with Amber, that's if you could call it one, was friendship and that hadn't even been established properly.
'Good morning, Mr H" Davis's cheerful voice bounced down the hall as he greeted me from the entrance of my office. It was a good morning a while ago.
'Good morning, Davis" I said flatly as I walked past him into the room. There were over a hundred items on the list in my mind but I had to shove all of them off and focus on the meeting at hand. I wasn't allowed to sulk, not over Amber Swift.
Always the perceptive manager, Davis followed me into the office with concern written all over his face, 'Is something wrong, Mr H?" His question was laced with worry and a hint of pity. Maybe it was because he thought the weight of running the enterprise was too much for me, I concluded in my head.
'Why haven't you started the meeting?" I asked, dodging his question and giving him one of my own, one I knew he would be compelled to answer.
Davis sighed softly, 'We got a call or I got a call rather, from Mr Harley" he gave me a look and quickly added, 'The other Mr Harley" I nodded for him to continue. I understood what he was saying, I wasn't the only Mr Harley and that was a known fact in company even though there had been mistakes here and there.
'As I was saying," Davis continued, clearing his throat, 'I got a call from Mr Harley not quite long after you texted me, to delay the meeting since he was going to be late also" I had seen Peter at the Alfred's but that had been long before Noah went back for his coffee.
It usually didn't take long to get an order ready or even if he wanted to have lunch over there, it wasn't supposed to take long enough for him to be done and be back in time for the meeting. I could sense something was up but then Noah had also disclosed something that could explain Peter's request.
I gave Davis a small smile as I gathered the documents that were needed for the meeting, Peter had said Pauline wasn't going to be available and then he had called to say he was going to be late. U decided to worry about them later, it was a plus for me anyways, having to oversee the meeting with them in attendance would have been hell.
I rounded the table with the documents in hand and the cup of coffee Noah had bought earlier, 'Let's go, Davis. We have a meeting to attend" I called out to the manager as I walked out of the office and towards the elevator not even waiting to see if he had followed me or not. I just wanted to get the meeting over and done with.
'......the renovations. The next project is on ground is to start gathering information on the delegates from Spain in regards to the contract we've been trying to sign with them" The speaker's voice floated towards me as I got out of the elevator and walked towards the conference room.
Ever since Noah took me on the tour of the company the day I resumed my duties as the acting CEO, I had avoided most of their meetings, asking Davis to stand in for me. But I decided to participate in the meeting even though I really wasn't interested in it.
'Mr H, do you want to address the board or you're just here to hear our what we have to say?" Davis whispered in my ear and I waved him away. I wasn't in the mood to participate in anything, I just wanted to be present.
Halfway through the meeting, the door of the conference room swung open revealing a heavily dressed Pauline using a very fake smile as an accessory as she waltzed into the room. Her arrival had momentarily caused the speaker to stop, so she waved towards him.
'I'm sorry for interrupting, you can continue" she said excitedly and it made me frown. Pauline Harley was a very bitter woman, she mostly never smiled unless she was in the middle of plotting or had just finalized it. It had come as a huge surprise to me when she revealed she had a son.
The speaker cleared his throat and continued. Davis gave me a side look which I curtly ignored, trying to concentrate on the speaker who had switched topics completely upon Pauline's arrival like the whole thing had been planned earlier.
'The next project on our list right now is to start getting the funding for Miss James's movie ready. It will soon be in production and we have to help in anyway we can since they're part of our shareholders now" he said hurriedly and I exchanged looks with Davis.
'I thought we were discussing the meeting with the foreign delegates" Davis asked raising his voice loud enough for everyone in the room to hear. The confusion on his face was a mask of the same look on my face. I was right about Pauline plotting.
Someone poked their head through the door of the conference room and caught us right in the middle of arguing. It was mostly Davis and the speaker who didn't take being interrupted, lightly. I had no intentions of fighting with Pauline or her brother, I knew they had both schemed up the plan, but I also couldn't ignore the point Davis was screaming to get across.
'Excuse me, Mr Harley. There's someone here to see Davis Walter" the woman, who I recognized as the receptionist at the front desk, said with an apologetic look on her face. What were the chances it was Amber? I couldn't help but think. I had told her to look for Davis to help with directions, maybe that was exactly what she was doing.
