Chapter 31
JAY'S POV
Eve was waiting in the living room with my mum as I walked into the house. It was almost midnight, I had to promise the triplets I would come see them the next day before they had allowed me to leave. Asides the triplets, I had stalled to see if Amber would show up to say goodbye at least but she didn't and after placing my number along with the jacket on the chair she had sat on earlier, Noah drove me home.
Mum rushed towards me as soon as I walked into the house, I gave Noah a smile as he walked past me to go instruct the maids to draw me a hot bath, with a hundred questions on her mind but one in her mouth,
"Where have you been, Jay? Your siblings got back ages ago" she grabbed me into a hug. I wasn't really in the mood to engage in any question and answer section but I needed to talk about Eve and what had transpired in the gym earlier on at the reunion party.
"Why is Eve here?" I asked, ignoring her question. The look o her face showed me she wasn't pleased I was asking a question instead but she answered nonetheless,
"She came back with Pauline cause she was worried about you" Worried about me, yeah, right.
"The only person she cares about is herself, mum" I said as i looked her over. I really thought she was going to change with time, I was very wrong, Eve James never changed.
"Don't say that, Jay. She has been here for hours waiting for your return" mum argued but I knew Eve more than she did and if she had seen what Eve had done at the party, she would despise her as much as I did.
"Mum, I don't know what your intentions are but I'd advise you to stop whatever you plan on doing. I do not like Eve and i don't want to have anything to do with her" I made my voice as loud as possible so she was sure to hear me. The frown on her face showed me she had gotten the message but my mum wasn't hearing what I was saying,
"Don't say such things, Jay. Eve is a nice girl" she made an attempt to get me to see Eve the way she saw her but I knew otherwise.
Noah had told me the company was in a tight spot the last time we visited but I didn't know how serious it was until my mum started talking about it,
"The company is going through a major crisis right now, Jay. That's one of the reasons I told you to come back home" she paused to make sure I was following, I just wanted to know what the company had to do with Eve.
"Eve's family owns the biggest entertainment industry in the whole of Los Angeles. You know where I'm driving at right?" She added. I wasn't catching on as fast as she wanted so she spelled the words out for me,
"So, you have to watch the things you say to Eve cause she's the woman you're going to be getting married to"
AMBER'S POV
Mel picked up after the fourth try, I had initially wanted to yell at her for abandoning me at a party she dragged me to, again but her voice was so hoarse it was a struggle for me to hear her. Fear replaced anger so fast I didn't even have time to pull on the breaks as I flooded her with questions.
"Are you okay? What happened? Why are you crying?" I was losing my mind as she started crying all over again. "Mel, please talk to me, what happened?"
She sniffed loudly and said, "I'm sorry I left you at the party like that Amber, something came up" I could tell something had come up but an apology wasn't what I was aiming for, I wanted to know what had happened.
"You'll apologize to me later, Mel. For now, I need you to tell me what happened" I almost yelled into the receiver but she was crying too much she couldn't even form coherent sentences.
My heart started racing all over again and I tried to take deep breaths, I'd already scared myself enough for one night, "Breathe, Mel, breathe" I encouraged as she took deep breaths.
"Ken came back..fro..m the...tri.." she broke down into tears again and I wanted to go comfort my friend so badly but it was past midnight and i had already exhausted my limbs. I did the only thing I could do, try to calm her down from the phone.
"Breathe, Mel. Don't rush it, take your time. Everything will be okay" I wasn't sure what the problem was to even know if it could be solved but I reassured her anyways.
The line went silent for minutes except the sounds of her sniffling, I waited patiently on my end till she started talking again,
"Ken came back from the trip, Amber" she choked out in between sniffles. I encouraged her to go on and she did, "He called me when I got to the restroom after I left you and demanded I returned back home immediately with the kids" she stopped for breaths and I waited.
"I told him the kids were at your place and we were at the reunion party I had told him about earlier. He threatened to divorce and get full custody of the children if I didn't return back to the house immediately" she started crying and If I didn't like Ken Duke before, it quickly moved up the scale to pure hatred.
The house was quiet as I went downstairs to get a cup of coffee after finally soothing Mel enough to get her to go to sleep. I knew how much the divorce would affect Mel and the kids but with everything going on, it seemed like a good option but it also wasn't my place to suggest such a thing to her.
I peeked into the triplets room and was glad to see they were all sound asleep, I couldn't sleep so I decided to watch a little bit of tv. I was surprised to see the jacket Jay had wrapped around me on the chair but was more surprised to see he had left a note also.
