Chapter 35

AMBER'S POV
You'd think I would have gotten used to hearing Jay Harley's voice by now right? Well, you thought wrong cause hearing his voice again made me realize I was no where near that. Maddie was seated next to me while the others were staring squarely at me from the couch directly opposite us.
'Mum, say something" Maddie whispered in my ear and I took a deep breath, steadied my racing heart and introduced myself,
'Hi, uhm, it's Amber Swift" I croaked out and Maddie shot me a confused look. How was I going to explain to my triplets talking to their beloved Jay Harley was threatening to give me a heart attack.
There was a pause on the other end and then I heard him clear his throat before responding,
'Hi, it's so nice that you decided to call me. I was scared you wouldn't see the note since I just tucked it into the jacket" He said. I smiled slightly and Maddie giggled as she exchanged looks with her brothers.
I shushed and shushed and finally got my baby to stop giggling as I answered the man on the other end of the call, 'Yeah, I saw it. Thanks for leaving such positive words" Maddie gave yet another giggle and I shot her a look that would have scared any child, well, any child that wasn't my child.
I heard him clear his throat again and my smile mirrored Maddie's even though we were smiling for two different reasons. I was just glad he was feeling as anxious as I was, it would have been super weird if I was the only one feeling giddy about talking to him.
'It's no biggie, I'm glad you're fine now. It is also very nice that you called me" his voice pierced through the receiver and through the thoughts that were spiralling in my head.
Maddie's giggles were coming in successions and it didn't take long for her brothers to join in. Mel just sat at the far end of the couch, observing the whole situation without intervening, it was annoying.
I held a finger to my lips to indicate they stopped their annoying giggles but Maddie decided it was time to make her voice heard,
'Mum, can we say hi?" She asked with the cutest puppy eyes she had ever conjured up. I knew there was a chance he was hearing our little side conversation but I also wasn't sure so I told her to keep her mouth shut and allow me to make the phone call they had literally pushed me to do.
'Mr Harley might be busy honey, you'll talk to him later" I tried to sound convincing but it didn't work cause Maddie switched from giggling to grumbling. Great.
'It wouldn't hurt to just say hi though" I almost fired Mel an arrow with my eyes and the woman had the audacity to just shrug. I'd eventually end up killing her, I was very sure.
Turning my attention from the annoying people in the room, back to the call, made me realize Jay had been silent for quite awhile. My mind started juggling different thoughts as I waited impatiently for him to say something, anything.
Someone started yelling in the background as I heard a door slam open, I could make out a few sentences as I listened quietly,
'Why did you tell your mum you weren't going to pull through with the wedding!" A woman shouted and I could tell she was standing at a distance, probably at the door that had slammed against the wall.
'I am not having this conversation with you, I'm busy, leave" I heard Jay response and wondered what was going on. It was rude to eavesdrop on other people's conversations so I hung up.
I came face to face with a pair of diamond blue eyes as I dropped the phone on the table, I guess it was interrogation time. I wasn't even given a chance to prepare myself for the process as the questions started trooping in.
'Did Jay Harley ask about us?"
'Who was that yelling in the background?"
'Is he getting married to someone else?"
'Mum, why did you hang up?"
I decided to answer the last question and ignore every other one they had thrown at me,
'He was talking to someone, Frankie. You know it's rude to.."
He cut me off before I finished my sentence, 'Yeah, it's rude to eavesdrop on someone's conversation" he rolled his eyes and I sighed.
'But he wanted to talk to you mum. Isn't that why he didn't hang up?" Danny asked as he crossed the room to sit next to me. The kid had a point though, Jay hadn't hung up even after his guest, whoever she was, started yelling at him. It didn't matter though, it was none of our business.
'There's chores to do my beloved triplets, I've done what you wanted and it's time to do what I want" They grumbled in unison but walked out of the room anyways. With the triplets occupied, my mind was free to wander back to the conversation I'd just had with Jay Harley.
It was really nice that I wasn't the only nervous one on the call, with the encounter we'd both had from the gym down to the waterline, it would have been strange if there wasn't any awkwardness. I could sense he wanted to say hi to the kids but whoever had barged into his office had kept him and his mind preoccupied.
'I think I recognize the voice" Mel's voice dragged my attention towards her. I had put the phone on speaker phone cause Maddie had bugged me to, it meant everyone had heard the woman in the background yelling.
Mel was right, I had also felt like I had heard that voice before. It sounded so familiar but I was having a hard time putting a face to the voice when Mel cracked the code.
'Eve James!"
