Chapter 86
AMBER'S POV
As Jay pulled up in front of the house, I glanced to the back of the car and saw the kids were all asleep wrapped around one another. Even Frankie who usually acted like he hated any form of PDA, was wrapped up with Maddie and Maddie with Danny. It was an odd combination but they looked so perfect together. My beautiful triplets.
It had taken almost five minutes of disagreement and disapproval but Melissa had finally convinced me to go home with the kids. Daniel promised to take them with him when the doctor discharged Stacey. We could all fit in my house but I thought it was a good idea.
Looking from his mother to me, Ken asked as he clung to Danny, 'Why can't we go with Danny?"
'We have to stay with your sister and Aunt Amber needs to rest. We'll go with Uncle Daniel and we'll see the triplets tomorrow, okay?" Melissa said reassuringly, adding a smile on her face to show her Promise's authenticity. It didn't look like the kid bought it but at least he stopped disturbing Danny and clung to my son's namesake instead.
With her arms wrapped around me, Mel had expressed her gratitude for everything I had done for both her and her kids. One of the things we never did in our friendship was say ‘thank you' and I'm sorry' but it didn't seem like we ever did adhere to the rules we made.
'Take care of yourself, my love. If you need me or anything at all, I am just a text away. Okay?" My response to her appreciation was accompanied with a kiss on the forehead and another on the cheek.
I wanted to bug Melissa to take the children to my place but I knew they needed the breath of fresh air they would get at Daniel's and unlike my small house, a huge bed and a spacious room was exactly what Stacey needed after the traumatizing day she had had.
'You still haven't told me why you were unreachable most of the day though" Jay's voice pierced the silence as we stood at the porch with my back resting on the door. It was almost midnight and the kids had insisted we all stay together and what better way to bond than with Rick and Morty?
Even Frankie that usually never included himself in our arrangements had agreed to the idea and as I stood with Jay as he was about to leave, they were busy setting up the makeshift bed we usually used for our movie nights in the living room.
I frowned up at him, 'You were unreachable too, why were you?" I answered him with a question of my own. I didn't like the fact that he was making it seem like I was the only one that was unavailable through the whole ordeal.
Mirroring my triplets smile, Jay took a step closer to me, 'I had to work, Amber. I don't like doing it but I don't have much of a choice" he said as he leveled his eyes with mine.
'You aren't the only one that have to work, Jay" I argued. 'Even though I would rather be doing anything else than what I'm doing right now" I added, more to myself than to him.
Jay took another step closer and I felt my breath hitch in my throat, 'You're in need of a job?" It was a straightforward question but with him so close to me, I couldn't process what he had asked.
'What did you s..ay?" I stammered as I tried to withdraw from his gaze. My back was already resting on the door, there wasn't anywhere else to go. His eyes swept up and down my face to my chest, they seemed to say, 'There's no escape, Amber"
Smiling broadly, he repeated his question, 'I said, are you in need of a job?" I lowered my eyes to allow my brain work. He had asked about a job, I thought, I most definitely was in need of a job.
I enjoyed working at Carol's convenience store but the pay wasn't enough anymore, it wasn't enough from the start but it didn't look like anyone was willing to employ a mother of three who didn't even have a degree.
'So, what would it be?" Jay asked as he hitched closer to me again. I realized I had answered in my head and not to him.
Clearing my throat, I lifted my eye lids, 'I do need a job, do you have anything in mind?" I choked out with my eyes lowered again. Looking at him was bringing back memories I didn't even know were still stored in my head. Wasn't he seeing how agitated I was?
Trailing a finger down my cheek, he answered with a smile, 'I just might have something that would suit you perfectly and also be in my own favor" It was hard to miss the glint that appeared in his eyes as he said the last part of the statement but as I looked again, it was gone.
'Be in your favor?" I repeated, struggling to breathe as the finger moved from my face down towards my neck and chest. I sighed slightly and rested my face into his palm.
Jay seemed to like the gesture as he replaced the finger with his full hand as he cupped my face, 'Yes, whatever I'm going to do for you, Amber, it would most likely be in my benefit too" he said huskily and I raised my head quick enough to catch the glint again.
'Should you be thinking about your benefits when you're helping someone?" I made an attempt to tease but my voice came out trembling and I quickly cleared my throat. Whatever this man was doing, was having way more effect on me than I had thought.
With a very hoarse voice he responded to my question with a question of his own, 'Wouldn't I benefit from making you my personal assistant?"
I lifted my head as I tried to repeat the question, wanting to be sure I had heard him correctly, 'Assistant? Did you say...." My words caught in my throat as he pressed his lips to mine in the fiercest kiss I had ever had.
