Chapter 60

JAY'S POV
I thought being the CEO meant I was allowed to go to work whenever I liked, this wasn't what I had in mind when I decided to take up the position I had been forced into. Along with my women, I had to say goodbye to waking up late in the morning and No, that wasn't even the straw that broke the camel's back, I also had to sit in front of a desk, going through loads of files I didn't even understand.
Running a company wasn't this hard when I was back at California, along with Kenneth Duke, my personal assistant, Black Worth industry corps had Daniel Fletcher to take care of things. My days were usually spent doing different activities that didn't add much to my life and my nights were spent with any beautiful woman that needed money as much as I needed company.
All those had changed now, the only sort of relief I got these days was the time I had to spend with the triplets and their gorgeous mum, Amber. We all know how fast something becomes habitual right? Well, you'd think I was the father of the triplets with the way we spent time together. Amber on the other hand, was a tough nut to crack but we're getting there.
Davis had arrived that morning with over 10 folders in hand, I couldn't help but ask the question that had been eating me up for days,
'Why am I the one going through all the files?" I blurted out as he sat down opposite me, opening up a new file. The look he gave me almost made me swallow back the rest questions I had, almost.
'Who was in charge before I came? Why can't they go through the files?" I needed to know, it seemed like they were working me hard for a reason but I wasn't seeing it.
Davis gave me the smile I've gotten used to so much, 'Mrs Harley gave us instructions in regards to you and the company" he said as if it was common knowledge and I was just being absurd by not knowing it.
It made me more confused, 'And what are those instructions?" I asked, already getting tired of the back and forth. Why don't someone just tell me what was going on?
Davis looked like he was about to plunge into a session of truth revealing and I adjusted in my seat, ready to assimilate things but then he gave a slight shrug, 'You'll find out eventually" What in the effing fuck just happened?!
Have I given a list of the things I hated before? I wasn't sure but this was at the top of the charts containing the list of things I hated so much in the world. Giving me a peek at the contents on the table and then shutting the door on me, bro, it got on my most sensitive nerve.
'Why did you act like you wanted to tell me at first?" I sounded like I was whining but I didn't care. Why would he do such a thing to his boss? I was his boss anyways.
Davis chuckled and I felt my blood boil, slightly, 'There are some things that are better experienced, give it time. You'd understand soon enough" he said and left without even giving me a chance to protest.
Noah had talked about keeping my phone away from me while I worked to help me concentrate and as much as I had whined when he suggested it, it had helped me focus on the pile of files I had had to read through all morning long.
After rounding up with Davis who had eagerly accepted my offer to have lunch together, I realized I hadn't touched my phone all day so I decided to retract my offer and skip lunch altogether. Besides, it wasn't even 12 yet, there was still time to get something in my stomach before I had to attend the meeting with Peter.
Almost as soon as I removed my phone from DND, Daniel's call came right in. I moved from the chair to the sofa that was in the office, did I say being a CEO didn't have benefits? Well, I was just being paranoid.
'Hey, man. Where have you been?!" I wasn't even given a chance to say the usual 'hello" as Daniel started shooting me questions immediately I picked up.
I sighed as I replied, 'I've had a very busy morning, what's up?" There was a pause on Daniel's end like he was trying to do something. I waited for about five seconds before his response came,
'I've been trying to reach you since 2am, Jay. Was work that important?!" I have no idea why he was getting worked up, we mostly never talked so what was all the fuss about?
I tried to reason with him, 'Work is important, Dan. I wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't. Now, quit scolding me and tell me what's up" Another pause.
'I called you immediately Melissa called me and when you _weren't answering_, I called Amber. Turns out everyone isn't as unreliable as you are" he spat out but emphasized on the 'weren't answering" part and I involuntarily flinched. Put your phone on DND once and you get tagged 'unreliable" by your best friend, it is indeed a tough world.
I decided against beating myself up, t wasn't the time to dwell on my misgivings. There were a thousand questions I wanted to ask Daniel as he told me he was heading to Amber's house to be with Mel but I decided it wasn't the right time for questioning.
Whatever had happened was most likely a huge deal for Daniel to be so upset with me over. I couldn't resist asking myself the questions I couldn't ask Daniel though. Why had he reached out to me so late in the night? No, wrong question, why had Mel called Daniel so late at night and most importantly, Why didn't Amber call me?
