Chapter 27
JAY'S POV
'C'mon Amber! Breathe!" I yelled as I attempted CPR on her, she wasn't bulging and my heart was racing frantically. Why had she gone to such a place so late at night? My head was filled with so many questions and fear as I kept on pumping on her chest.
My limbs were already killing me from pumping when Amber started coughing out water, I raised her into a sitting position as she kept on coughing. Tears started streaming down her face afterwards and this time around I was glad I was there to give her a shoulder to lean on.
Thankfully, our basketball uniform came with a very huge jacket which I used to wrap around her as we walked back to the school. Amber didn't say a word all through and I couldn't even begin to imagine what was going on in her head so I just followed her quietly. That was the closest we had ever been since we met and I didn't want to ruin it or do anything to hurt her more than Eve and Pauline had done already.
Noah was waiting by the car as we got to the school yard, he rushed towards me with concern written all over his face, he most probably had been looking for me and I felt his relief as he asked me,
'Where have you been, Jay? I've been worried sick" it was obvious, I gave him a smile as I replied,
'Something came up, I'd like you to take us somewhere, Noah" I said dismissing his questions, I was going to answer them later. Noah understood the message and came around to open the door of the backseat for Amber. She raise her head, looked at me, muttered a little thank you and stepped into the car.
As Noah drove off, I caught a glimpse of Eve standing at the school's entrance looking at the car as we drove out of the school. Mum had some explaining to do in regards to Eve and her attitude. Pauline's drama was understandable, she had never had even a little human sympathy but I thought Eve was going to outgrow the teenage attitude she had back then, apparently she didn't.
Noah kept staring at me as I kept looking over my seat at Amber who was curled up at the back with her eyes closed. He nudged me slightly and whispered,
'Do you want to tell me what happened?" I took a deep breath and shifted my attention to him,
'It's a long story but I need to have a talk with my mum about Eve" Noah nodded and I continued,
'I have a feeling she's trying to set up something between Eve and I and I'm going to end it before it gets established" I took another deep breath and returned my attention to Amber. Noah wasn't exactly thrilled about the response I gave him,
'What does Eve have to do with any of this?" I wanted to tell him everything that had happened in the gym but Amber was laying in the back seat and I couldn't risk her hearing me talk about the encounter. So, I changed the topic,
'Did you see Daniel by chance?" Noah had been with me long enough to know when I didn't want to talk about something so he followed my lead,
'I saw him with a couple of guys back at the second batch party. And the twins left not quite along ago, seems like your mum has an announcement to make" he said and I wondered what must have happened for my mum to include the twins in whatever she wanted to say. I was going to worry about that later, for now, my main focus was on Amber as I looked over my shoulder at her again.
I wasn't sure if she was asleep or if she was thinking but I was just glad she was safe. She looked so fragile and small as she wrapped herself with my jacket, the world was a harsh place and I couldn't even imagine what she must have gone through after her family turned their backs on her but I knew I wasn't going to let her go through everything alone again.
'Do you know where she stays?" Noah's voice drifted me out of my thoughts. I did a quick retake, I actually didn't know where she was staying but I also didn't want to wake her up, she had gone through enough for one night. I turned to Noah and whispered,
'I think Daniel has Melissa's number, she should know Amber's address" I brought out my phone and was about texting Daniel when I realized the last time I saw him, he was dead drunk. I was running out of options when I heard her from the back,
'Just keep going forward past Alfred's, it's quite easy to locate. Thank you very much for this for real, I appreciate it" Noah shot me a sympathetic look, we most probably had woken her up. I leaned over and our eyes met,
'We're sorry we woke you up" I quickly apologized but she looked bewildered. Guess I wasn't supposed to apologize after I had done something huge for her. She hurriedly waved off the apology,
'You don't have to apologize to me, I should be the one apologizing for the trouble I've caused you" I gave her a smile but she didn't return it so I turned around to allow her rest.
The lights were on as we approached the small green colored flat, it looked so cozy I felt envious of her. I chided myself for feeling that way cause unlike me that had options, this little house was all Amber Swift had. Three bundle of intense joy raced out of the house the moment Noah drove into the yard, they stood at the porch waiting anxiously.
'Is that Jay Harley?" The girl asked one of the boys and I took another look at them, a closer look this time around and was surprised to see I recognized them.
'It is Jay Harley!" They ran down the little stairs of the entrance and stopped when they got close to the car. Noah shot me a strange look as I smiled broadly, I was correct, it was the infamous blue eyed triplets. Amber's children.
