Chapter 28

AMBER'S POV
After getting into the car with Jay Harley, I covered myself with the jacket he had given me and sank lower into the seat. I was too exhausted to even feel embarrassed or uncomfortable, I just wanted to go home and hug my children.
'Do you want to tell me what happened?" I twitched a bit as I heard the man make enquiries from Jay. I wanted to brace myself for the response he was going to give but instead he dismissed the conversation and I felt grateful to him.
He quietly said, 'it's a long story, but I'll have to talk to my mum about Eve" I wanted to ask what his relationship with Eve was but I decided against it. It wasn't my place to ask questions after he had his saved my life.
'I have a feeling she's trying to set up something between Eve and I and I'm going to put an end to it before it's established" I sighed as I recalled Mel telling me Eve was going to marry Jay so both their companies could be merged into one. Guess he didn't know what most of the people in Los Angeles knew about already.
The man who I assumed was his butler cause of the way he was dressed was asking more questions as I drifted off. Curiosity gave way to exhaustion as I gave myself away to sleep the same way I had given myself up to the water back at the waterline.
I had no idea how long I had been out for but I woke up in time to hear them looking for ways to get my address. I sighed, I had spent years hating Jay Harley but here I was, being taken care of by the same man I had spent 10 years despising. I decided to help them out as I saw they were driving towards Alfred's,
'Just keep going straight past Alfred's, it's quite easy to locate" the butler gave Jay a sympathetic look and gave me a little smile from the front mirror, I returned it. I turned back to Jay and added,
'Thank you for this for real. I appreciate it" Jay mirrored the butler's look as he apologized for waking me up. It didn't make any sense that he was apologizing to me so I quickly rebuked him,
'I should be the one apologizing for the stress I've caused you" I said instead and he flashed me one of his famous smile. I was too tired to return it but I sighed in acknowledgment of it instead. Jay Harley had done a lot for me in just one night and I was eternally grateful but I still couldn't find it in my heart to forgive him for what he had put me through.
The rest of the drive was quiet and I was grateful for it, I needed to think about the whole events that had happened. From the encounter in the gym to getting drunk then to the jump I had done back at the waterline, I was glad I was headed home. Jay hadn't asked me any questions regarding the waterline but I knew he was going to do so eventually and I dreaded the encounter.
The lights were on in the house as the butler pulled into the driveway of the flat I had been staying for 7 years with my triplets. I couldn't believe I had made a rash decision without thinking about my children and their lives. What came over me?
I knew the altercation was a trigger but that wasn't exactly the main reason I had chosen to give up on life and everything I had worked hard to establish. The front door swung open as the triplets raced out of the house with Mrs Carol in toll, it was way past their bedtime but I knew they had been waiting for me to come back.
'Is that Jay Harley?" I heard Maddie say as they gathered at the doorstep, looking at the black SUV Jay Harley and I had driven in. The look on Frankie's face was priceless as he confirmed that it was indeed, Jay Harley.
The butler parked in front of the house and the kids ran down the stairs towards the car. I could see the smile on Jay's face as his eyes lit up with recognition. He remembered them from the carnival and I didn't know if I was happy about it or if I wasn't.
Jay got out of the car and held on to Maddie as she flung herself into his arms, Danny followed closely afterwards but Frankie stood staring at the car. I could imagine what was going through his mind as he looked the car over.
'How are you kids doing?" Jay asked amidst laughter and my heart swelled at the sight I was beholding. The children had never warmed up to anyone as fast as they warmed up to Jay as he stood in their middle and the sight made my heart warm.
I sat quietly as I watched them stare at him like he was something out of Santa Claus bag and I would admit I was content with watching the scene from the back of the car but Jay had other things on his mind as he pointed to the car, directing the kids attention towards me.
