Chapter 72

JAY'S POV
On the scale of unexpected, crazy and shocking things that had happened since I got back to Los Angeles, Pauline's revelation totally beat the entire scale.
'You said I should help you do what??" I needed to be sure I had heard her correctly. Pauline wasn't one to make mistakes, had I probably heard wrongly?
I heard a sigh before she answered, 'I need you to help me pick up my son, Jay" I had heard correctly. Pauline had a son?
I asked the first logical question that came to mind, 'Where are you right now?" The pause on the other end was becoming too long so I asked again, 'Where are you right now, Pauline?" Silence.
I removed the phone from my ear, looked at the screen and saw she had hung up. Who drops a bombshell like that and leaves someone hanging? Obviously, Pauline. I took a deep breath and replayed the conversation in my head, I had never heard anything about a child before. Did mum know?
'Hello, son. How are you? You never call me, are you okay? Is something going on in the office?" Multiple questions bombarded me as soon as the call connected. Mothers and worrying was literally 5&6.
'Mum, breathe. I'm fine, everything is fine" I said into the receiver in my calmest voice. I heard her drag a breath and I took one of my own,
'What's going on then?" I could hear voices in the background, the house was usually mostly never quiet but the noise this time around, was unusually loud. What was going on over there? I decided to ask her before the call ends, but I needed to make enquiries about Pauline.
'Pauline.." I started but it was obvious she was distracted with whatever was going on in the background. The noise was getting louder like preparations were being put in place, I wondered what mum was planning this time around. I cleared my throat in a bid to get her attention,
'Son, I'm quite busy at the moment. Can we discuss whatever you want to talk about, when you get home later?" She struggled to ask over all the noise. I sighed, how was I going to get to the bottom of Pauline's affair?
'Sure thing, mum" I had barely gotten the words out before the line clicked off. Apparently, she was too busy for her son.
It was hard getting accustomed to the knocks on the door but I had at least being able to distinguish between Davis's and someone else. Without lifting my head up, I answered,
'What do you want, Davis?" I heard him chuckle slightly as he walked into the office. Asides his unusually bright smile, Davis used to have a terrible dress sense but it seemed he was getting fashion tips from someone now.
'The meeting with the directors will be starting in about 10 minutes. Is there anything you'd want me to get for you before then?" He asked as he set down some folders on the desk. Did I tell them I had finished going through the first folders?
I shrugged but it seemed Davis had more to say than what he had asked initially, he gave me a slight nod and moved towards the door. As he was about to twist the handle of the door when he stopped halfway, walked back to the seat opposite mine and sat down.
'I honestly don't like suspense, not one bit. If you have something to say, Davis, up and say it" I said as I placed the folders in the drawer of the desk, I'd go through them later.
Davis cleared his throat, 'I've been having conflicting feelings since you came, Sir" his voice had a different tone I hadn't heard before, it was strange.
'Confliction about what?" I asked with my full attention on him. Whatever he had to say was important and it most probably involved the company. His silence wasn't what I needed, I needed him to say what he had to, so I can try calling Amber again for the hundredth time.
Whatever Davis had to say wasn't just important, it was hard, 'Things had been different before you came, Sir. We had been working on a project that was going to change the course of things but it had been halted since you came" he finally spat out. A project?
Davis nodded as he saw the look of confusion on my face, 'A very important project, it was supposed to be put into plan a week before you arrived in Los Angeles but things had to be stopped after Miss Harley left"
'What project are you talking about, Davis?" I asked with a frown spreading over my face. I knew Peter and Pauline had been planning something, their demeanor when I got back from California was enough signs for me to know I had arrived at a time inconvenient for them. But there was a project they were working on?
Davis looked like he was having a hard time arranging his words well, I knew he had been working for the twins so I didn't pressure him. It wouldn't do to put himself at risk just because he needed to clear his conscience, he would give me as much information as he felt was necessary.
July 16th wasn't near my best song in the album so why did I use it as my ringtone? Davis had already started talking when the call cut him short, 'Answer your phone, sir. I'll be back with some documents, they should be able to help you understand what I'm talking about" he stood up and walked out of the office.
Redirecting my attention, I realized the phone was still ringing and Pauline was calling, again. I would admit I was hoping it would be Amber, it had been hours and I hadn't been able to reach her or even Daniel. Either I was being punished for my negligence or they were just tired of my unreliability and were settling things themselves. Either way, I had to settle Pauline and head over to Amber's.
