Chapter 25 A Fool's Life Was Useless
Jacqueline had never seen Jennifer's unusual behavior before, and neither Zachary nor Henry had seen her in such a state. Jennifer had always projected a sense of elegance and intelligence. Despite being provoked, she remained polite and avoided confrontation.
Her appearance was now disheveled, and her demeanor was reminiscent of an enraged lioness. Her unkempt hair, rumpled clothing, and skewed necklace intimidated those around her, discouraging them from approaching.
Cynthia seemed terrified by Jennifer's transformation. Forgetting about their magical game, she started crying out, "Mommy! Mommy!"
Jennifer was jolted back to reality by her wails. After releasing Jacqueline's hand, she staggered back to Cynthia's side, embracing her tightly and speaking in a trembling voice, "Cynthia, don't cry."
"Mommy, stop fighting," Cynthia pleaded through tears.
"I'm not fighting, Cynthia. Did I scare you? It's all my fault. I failed to protect you." Jennifer's voice trailed off as tears welled up and cascaded down her cheeks as she consoled her crying daughter.
Zachary and Henry felt a pang in their hearts as they watched Jennifer and Cynthia embrace in tears. Their discomfort was palpable, and when they looked at Jacqueline, their eyes were brimming with rage.
Jacqueline, still reeling from the blows she had taken, felt her anger rise as she witnessed Jennifer and Cynthia's shared sorrow.
Internally agitated, she thought, 'I survived the assault without crying! What right have they to weep?'
When Sariah Young and Jacqueline's husband, Lennie Young, returned, they were met with the tumultuous scene. They were enraged and demanded immediate action.
"What is this uproar from the Edwards family?! Call the police! I'll call the cops!"
Zachary, who had initially hesitated to use violence against a woman, approached Lennie with a cold smile. He stated, "Feel free to contact the police; we can compensate you financially. But, if your family did use witchcraft to harm my daughter, the Edwards family will use all of their connections to ensure justice is served!"
Zachary's mention of witchcraft sent shivers down Lennie's back. He cast an anxious look at Jacqueline, whose tear-streaked face revealed her distress as she sat on the ground.
"They burned the soul contract. Oh, dear Donny..." Jacqueline's lamentations filled the air, unsettling Lennie even more.
Lennie's resolve crumbled when he learned that the Edwards family had not only discovered the truth, but also destroyed the soul contract. Sariah's eyes widened in surprise, her rage directed at Jacqueline. "You are utterly useless! You couldn't even handle one thing correctly!"
Sariah's despair turned to rage as she complained, "How could they burn my son Donny's soul contract? It's his entire life! The Edwards family is despicable."
Young family's audacity to curse them despite their exposed conspiracy enraged Zachary and the others. Before they could retaliate, Kimberly appeared, unleashing a barrage of criticism against Sariah.
"Your family conspired against my granddaughter, and you have the audacity to label us as wicked. Shame on you!"
Sariah remained unfazed and unrepentant. "Your granddaughter is a fool. What good is a fool in this world? It's better to give up her life for my grandson. He is intelligent; why should he perish?"
Desperate, Jacqueline begged Cynthia for help, saying, "Cynthia, I have no other choice. Donny is ill. I must save him. Can you help him, given how he used to play with you? I'm not asking for much—just fifty years of life for him..."
Jennifer was furious at their shameless pleas.
She pondered, 'Is it justifiable for my daughter to suffer and die simply because she is deemed foolish? How can she demand fifty years of my daughter's life? Most people have only two fifty-year periods in their lives. Jacqueline's audacity has no bounds.'
Jennifer's desire to retaliate against Jacqueline was intense, but she was unable to act in the moment.
When Jennifer heard Jacqueline's words, she quickly covered Cynthia's ears, shielding her from the negative conversation. Jennifer lacked the energy to fight Jacqueline, but Henry, unburdened, took action. Disregarding the societal taboo against men striking women, he approached Jacqueline and discreetly escorted her out of Jennifer's sight, worried about the psychological impact of her bruised appearance.
With the soul contract broken, the Edwards family no longer wanted to witness the Youngs' distress. Their bodyguards quickly led them away, putting an end to the altercation.
Olivia purposefully remained behind as they departed. Turning to the Youngs with a resentful glare, she delivered a chilling prophecy. "Those who use witchcraft to harm others will face consequences. As the mastermind, you can't escape justice. The Young family will face three years of misfortune, with disasters following one another." Olivia's tone softened slightly as she added, "Consider this advice a freebie from me, no charge."
Alexander couldn't help but feel amused as he observed Olivia's earnest demeanor. Olivia possessed not only genuine abilities, but also a talent for business. This realization alleviated Alexander's concerns; after all, the Sinclairs were financially secure.
Cynthia returned home and leaned weakly against Jennifer's embrace, murmuring, "Mom, I'm hungry." When the Edwards family saw Cynthia's frailty, they became concerned and inquired about any potential complications.
Olivia reassured them, "Don't worry; it's only minor aftereffects, nothing serious. Provide her with some energy supplements and make sure she gets enough sunlight during the day."
The Edwards family was relieved to hear Cynthia was fine and trusted Olivia's assessment implicitly. They believed Olivia when she said Cynthia was fine.
Just as the mood lightened, Olivia said, "She'll need some rest in the coming days. Then I will help her recover her lost wisdom."
Her statement was delivered casually, but the Edwards family members were left stunned, unable to comprehend what they had just heard.
"Master Sinclair, what do you mean? Are you saying that my daughter...?" Zachary, usually composed as a business elite, stumbled over his words.
Olivia winked knowingly as she looked at Jennifer, who was equally surprised.
"I recall discussing this with Jennifer previously..."
