Chapter 40 Whoever Likes Oliva is Not a Good Guy
When Kayla and Paul received the phone call, they rushed to the hospital, finding Nicole and Scott just out of the operating room.
Nicole had fractures in both legs and a slight concussion, while Scott only suffered a broken arm, coincidentally the same arm Nicole had held earlier.
Despite the head-on collision, the driver, expected to bear the brunt, escaped with minor injuries, needing only basic medical attention before leaving the hospital.
Kayla's attention was solely on Nicole, her heart aching as she looked at her pale-faced daughter lying in the hospital bed. Her trembling body was caught by a nurse just in time.
"Nicole, why are you so unlucky? You should've stayed home. How can I cope if anything happens to you?" Kayla cried, while Paul, already with a headache, reprimanded her, "Enough, Nicole is fine!"
Kayla's unhappiness flared as she retorted sharply, "Her legs are broken. How can you say she's fine?! And I can't shake off the feeling that the Young family's driver did this intentionally! Why else would Nicole be the most injured?"
"Shut up! You're giving me a headache with all your noise!" Paul snapped, sitting on a nearby sofa, visibly frustrated.
Since Paul's outburst, their relationship had changed. He no longer treated Kayla with the same care and tenderness as before, leaving her feeling unfairly treated yet silent by his side.
After a while, she couldn't help but speak again, expressing her concerns about the string of misfortunes befalling them. "Paul, something is really off in our family. First, both of us got sick, then David had a car accident, and now even Nicole is in trouble. How can all of this happen so coincidentally?"
Paul remained silent with a serious face, but it was clear that he was listening to her.
Kayla then explained with an intentional tone, "Especially that night, I felt like I was being controlled. Those words came out of my mouth uncontrollably. It wasn't my intention. It was as if someone was controlling me to say those things."
Beside her, Paul scoffed coldly, unconvinced by Kayla's words. He pondered how she could have uttered such things if she hadn't harbored those thoughts in her mind.
After two days of tranquility, Paul's initial anger towards her had dissipated. Additionally, he began to sense that something was amiss.
He had always prided himself on his self-control. Even when faced with Kayla's foolish actions, he refused to succumb to madness.
It wasn't out of overwhelming love for her, but rather because he held firm to the belief that only worthless men would resort to violence against their wives.
He saw himself as a respectable man, one who would uphold rationality and dignity even in the most infuriating of circumstances. That was why he felt unsettled that night.
"Honey, do you think all of this has something to do with that little bitch, Olivia?" Kayla speculated, reminding Paul of Olivia's previous warnings.
His expression darkened as he acknowledged the potential connection, deepening his suspicion.
Their conversation was interrupted by Nicole waking up, distressed over Scott's intentions to break up with her.
Kayla couldn't help but feel exasperated, wondering how Nicole could worry about a breakup with her leg in such condition.
Unaware of Nicole's numbness due to anesthesia, Kayla's frustration grew as Nicole dwelled on Scott's words, interpreting them as abandonment for Olivia.
Nicole's anger flared, blaming Olivia and Scott for her predicament, unaware that Paul overheard her thoughts, strengthening his belief in Olivia's involvement.
Nicole's suffering continued, leading Paul to connect the dots between Olivia's threats and their recent misfortunes, prompting him to ask about Nicole's grandmother's bracelet.
His eyes narrowed slightly, his face gloomy. "Perhaps it really is related to her."
When Kayla heard Paul’s saying, she instantly felt relieved. She was about to agree when Nicole, who was lying on the bed, suddenly groaned and woke up.
Kayla and Paul couldn't care about anything else at the moment, and they hurriedly went to her bedside.
After seeing the two of them, Nicole was frightened at first. After a while, it seemed like she realized that she wasn't in a dream.
Suddenly, while looking at them, she cried out, "Dad, Mom, Scott wants to break up with me."
Kayla thought to herself, 'Your leg is broken, and you're worried about Scott breaking up with you?'
Even though Kayla was Nicole's mother, at this moment, she couldn't help but feel speechless.
However, Kayla didn't know that because the anesthesia hadn't worn off yet, Nicole couldn't feel any pain at the moment. So her immediate thought was about what Scott had said to her in the car.
While Scott didn't explicitly suggest a breakup, it was clear to her what he meant.
Nicole pondered to herself, 'He obviously wants to leave me for Olivia, now that she's part of the Sinclair family. It's all Olivia's doing. Even if she leaves the Parker Villa, she still wants to compete with me! And Scott? He's no better, just a scumbag! Men who favor Olivia aren't worth a second thought!'
Nicole looked furious. However, she didn't know that Paul had heard her thoughts.
Paul became more certain in his heart that these things were related to what Olivia had said before.
Nicole's misfortune had not been transferred successfully, so her hardships were not yet over. Therefore, she first had a series of nightmares, then Scott wanted to break up with her, and finally, she had a car accident.
These things were exactly the same as what happened to Nicole when she was a child.
Moreover, Kayla's peculiar behavior that night raised suspicions. If Olivia had influenced Kayla to divulge her inner thoughts involuntarily, then Kayla must possess knowledge of the matter. Otherwise, she wouldn't have been aware of how to reverse fate to ward off misfortune, let alone thwart its successful reversal.
When Paul thought of this, his breath became slightly hurried. He instinctively looked at Nicole's wrist. However, there was nothing on her wrist. So, he hurriedly asked, "Nicole, where is the bracelet your grandmother left you?"
"I left that bracelet at home. Why are you suddenly asking about it?" To Nicole, that bracelet was too old-fashioned. She wouldn't have worn it if it weren't to provoke Olivia. So, she later threw the bracelet into the jewelry box.
Paul thought of Olivia's words at that time. So, he told them his guesses.
Upon learning that Olivia could potentially save her life if she presented the bracelet, a flicker of ferocity flashed across Nicole's face. However, she quickly masked this emotion, adopting a composed demeanor. Simultaneously, she cast a glance at Kayla, her expression tinged with pity.
Kayla didn't disappoint Nicole. She immediately screamed, "You want Nicole to beg that wretch? That's not possible! Paul, how could you have such an idea? Are you trying to humiliate Nicole with that wretch? No way! I absolutely won't agree!"
Paul had anticipated her reactions. He looked coldly at Kayla and said, "Do you have any other ideas besides this method? If Nicole's misfortune is still there, then today's car accident will definitely not be the end."
When Nicole heard this, her face instantly turned pale. She appeared vulnerable and helpless.
Kayla's heart ached so much that tears were welling up in her eyes. She held onto Nicole's head and said, "There are so many talented people in this world. We don't have to rely on that jerk for help. And what does she know anyway? If she really had the ability, she wouldn't have protected Nicole from misfortune for eighteen years in our home. I think she's just intentionally talking nonsense. She wants to humiliate Nicole and steal Mom's bracelet."
Paul frowned at Kayla, but he didn't immediately argue back. Obviously, he had the same concerns in his mind.
Just then, someone pushed open the door to the hospital room.
The person who came in was David, who had hurried over after hearing the news. He had heard everything outside the door.
"Since she wants Grandma's bracelet, then let's give it to her. After all, there's nothing more important than Nicole. As for the bracelet, I'll deliver it to her on Nicole's behalf," David said calmly and confidently. He didn't take it seriously.
After all, he had been Olivia's brother for eighteen years. He believed that as long as he spoke, Olivia would not refuse him.
