Chapter 29 Unfold the Scene
Megan noticed Olivia's black ball gown and chose a white ostrich feather evening dress to complement her own elegance. Initially impressed by Olivia's earlier appearance, the brothers refrained from complimenting her to avoid inflating her ego. However, in Megan's presence, they showered her with enthusiastic compliments, making her appear as the true princess of the family. Megan cast a quick glance at Olivia, subtly flaunting her attire.
Ignoring their admiration, Olivia focused on simplifying her hairstyle with the help of a hairstylist. Megan's smile faded slightly as she noticed Olivia's indifference.
Concerned, Tom asked, "Megan, what's bothering you?"
"It's nothing," Megan said quietly, her tone subdued. "You should all focus on Olivia today. She would not appreciate our distractions."
Owen furrowed his brow. "Why is her happiness more important than ours? We grew up together.
Tom nodded in agreement. "Yes, Uncle Kenneth and Grandpa favor her because she's returned recently."
They whispered among themselves because they didn't want to openly mock Olivia. Megan questioned them about their encounter with Olivia, wary of her reputed temper.
She even thought that if Olivia insisted on not returning home today, it would reflect poorly on the Sinclair family, and Olivia would undoubtedly be blamed for it.
But unexpectedly, Olivia had still returned.
Tom did not hold back when recounting Kenneth's actions to Megan. She was taken aback by Kenneth's actions for Olivia.
She mused quietly, 'He treats his biological daughter differently.'
Despite her disdain, she cautioned, "We must keep Grandpa unaware of this. It would devastate him to discover that Uncle Kenneth prioritizes Olivia over us."
Megan sighed and lamented, "Our family was once harmonious. I'm not sure how it turned into chaos."
Megan's insinuations fueled the brothers' hostility toward Olivia. They began to view her return as a source of family strife, overshadowing her initial allure.
Megan decided to escalate their animosity toward Olivia after observing their reactions. She sighed softly, "I hope that Olivia would behave responsibly this time."
Tom's expression softened, and he muttered, "It appears she did not have it easy with the Parkers. If she doesn't overstep in the future, we might give her a chance."
Tom was concerned about Olivia living in her modest rental house.
Megan was stunned by Tom's unexpected response.
…
The dinner started at 7:30 in the evening.
As darkness fell, the garden at Sinclair Villa shone with lights, transforming the mansion into a magnificent and dazzling castle. Luxury cars began arriving just before seven o'clock, disembarking well-dressed guests, young and old, dressed in suits and formal gowns.
Percival had extended invitations primarily to families with close ties to the Sinclairs and those well-known throughout Haereth and beyond. The majority of attendees were accompanied by their parents, with a few bringing gifts from their families.
The grandeur of the event astounded many.
Nicole, accompanied by her parents Paul and Kayla, was overwhelmed when she saw the distinguished guests. Many were unfamiliar to Paul, and Nicole recognized others solely through their social media presence.
"Nicole, you are remarkable. Getting an invitation from the Sinclair family is a testament to your fortune," Paul complimented his daughter.
Having suffered setbacks as a result of the canceled collaboration with the Sinclairs, Paul was looking forward to rebuilding their relationship at the dinner.
Kayla felt somewhat uneasy when she sensed Paul's ambition. She blurted out, "Should we warn your dad beforehand, just in case he's caught off guard by the revelation about that woman... Kenneth's daughter?"
Nicole and Kayla, fearful of Paul's reaction, had kept Olivia's possible identity as Kenneth's daughter hidden, fearing blame for the failed cooperation.
Tonight, Paul was determined to rekindle cooperation with the Sinclair family.
The trio remained at the entrance until a man emerged from within.
The man exuded handsomeness as he wore a bespoke, high-end suit—it was Scott, who had recently confirmed his romantic relationship with Nicole.
The Young family wielded power in Wonkin City, their influence reaching far and wide. Scott, on the other hand, came from a less well-known branch of the family and was sent to Haereth to increase their market presence. Over time, he carved out a niche for himself.
Despite their lack of prominence in Haereth, the Young family branch was treated with respect because of their connections to the Scott family, who were well-known in Wonkin City. This association placed the Youngs in Haereth's upper echelons.
Scott, looking for a prestigious local match, initially courted Olivia, drawn to her affections and favorable impression. However, after learning of Olivia's humble origins as the Parker family's adopted daughter, his interest waned, and he turned his attention to Nicole.
Nicole asked him to get her an invitation to the evening's event, which Scott found difficult. However, due to an unexpected issue, the Lennie family withdrew their invitation yesterday, creating an opportunity for Nicole.
Scott had no idea that the Lennie family had gotten into a fight with Zachary and his wife the night before. Had he been aware of the conflict and his family's involvement, he might have been more discreet in inviting the Parkers to the banquet.
As lights radiated from the villa, guests naturally gravitated inside.
The banquet to welcome Miss Sinclair back finally began.
