Chapter 71 Who Should Be Punished?
After a day of making a scene, Elena stopped causing trouble and quietly lay in bed for treatment.
However, she still refused to eat.
She insisted on wanting to see Annie one last time, but Hassan always refused.
They remained in a stalemate. If she didn't eat, he wouldn't allow anyone else to eat either.
Regardless, he had Noura deliver three meals a day on time. If she missed her mealtime, he didn’t let Noura bring food later.
Most of the time, he sat by Elena's bedside, his black eyes fixed on her tightly, not saying a word or showing any expression.
At first, Elena would glare at him, but eventually, as soon as she saw him enter, she would immediately close her eyes, ignoring him completely.
On the afternoon of the third day, Hassan made a phone call and handed it to Elena.
Elena continued to ignore him.
Hassan wasn't angry either. He pressed the speaker button on the phone, and Sarah's voice quickly came through.
"Hello, is this Elena? Are you still in the UK? You little girl, why haven't you called back at all?"
Facing the familiar voice of her mother, Elena choked up and couldn't say a word. Annoyed, Hassan snatched the phone from her hand, turned off the speaker, and put it to her ear.
"Mom, it's me!"
"It's really you! Why didn't you make a phone call? You have no idea how worried I was! I asked around everywhere to find your whereabouts in England. If you don't call back soon, I'll prepare to personally visit England."
"Mom, don't come, I'm still in England."
"Oh, have you been mistreated by the Robinson family? Has Daria been giving you a hard time? Have you seen Annie?"
Sarah bombarded Elena with a series of questions, leaving Elena unsure of how to respond.
"Mom, I'm fine, the Robinson family is good too..."
Elena said haphazardly, not knowing how to explain Annie's situation to her mother.
"That's good, you scared me! I thought something happened between you and Annie! These past few days, I've been praying and begging God to keep both of you safe. They say a daughter is a mother's heart and soul. With both of you not by my side, I've truly come to understand the meaning of that saying. Life wouldn't be meaningful without you two."
"Mom..." Elena choked up, suddenly realizing that she couldn't accept Annie's death, and her mother wouldn't either.
"Elena, let Annie say something to me. I'm going crazy missing her. She used to annoy me so much all the time. I didn't realize how long it had been since I last saw her. My heart feels uneasy."
"Mom... Annie's mental health is not good. She's currently receiving counseling at the hospital. The doctors said she shouldn't be disturbed for now. Mom, can you wait a few more days..."
"I knew it would be like this! Fine, when will you come back then?"
"Mom, I'll stay here to take care of Annie for a while. I'll call you when the time comes."
"Alright, take care of yourself. Don't let your health deteriorate."
Listening to her mother's warm advice, Elena couldn't control the sadness in her heart. Tears streamed down her face. After hanging up the phone, she lay on the bed and indulged in her tears.
After fully venting her emotions, Elena finally looked up.
Hassan was still standing by the bed, his pitch-black eyes fixed on her.
"Are you done crying?"
Elena turned her head, ignoring him.
"Not eating?"
Hassan only stared at her, and Elena stubbornly said, "Not eating!"
"Alright, then keep starving!"
Hassan didn't try to persuade her either. After throwing out those icy words, he turned and walked out.
“This damn man, does he think it's a crime to show some weakness?” she thought. Knowing well that she was starving, almost starving to death, he still said something like that to her.
Before talking to her mother, Elena was immersed in deep grief and couldn't free herself from it. But since the call, she realized she couldn't continue to be so depressed. If something were to happen to herself again, there would be no one to take care of her mother.
With this in mind, Elena reached for the pillow on the bedside and threw it at the back of Hassan's figure.
Hassan swiftly turned around and caught the pillow in his hand.
"Do you want to challenge me?"
"I'm hungry!" Elena softened.
Hassan curled his lips, a hint of satisfaction evident in his eyes, as if everything was within his expectations.
"Noura, bring her some food!"
"Yes, master!"
Noura responded and came in with many packed boxes in her hands. Elena looked at her in surprise. It seemed like Noura had already prepared the food, standing at the door, waiting for Hassan's command.
Elena wasn't that foolish. She instantly understood that Hassan had set a trap for her silently. However, Elena was truly hungry. As soon as Noura served the food, she started eating desperately.
Annie's funeral was held three days later in a very low-key manner. All the guests present were strangers to Elena.
Hassan parked the car on the outskirts, and Elena was accompanied by Noura as they entered the funeral venue.
Looking at the casket adorned with flowers and red lacquer, Elena was overwhelmed with grief.
"Miss Walker, let me present this bouquet of flowers to your sister." Noura looked at Elena, who was crying so heartbrokenly and walked as if she could be blown away by the wind at any moment.
Elena shook her head. "Let me do it myself."
She held a bunch of pure white chrysanthemums and walked to the front of the casket, reaching out to touch Annie's photo. The pain in her heart surged like a tide.
"Annie, I'm sorry. Sister couldn't protect you. I hope you can forgive me. If there is an afterlife, let's continue to be good sisters." Elena sobbed.
"Elena, don't be too sad! This might be a relief for Annie. Life in heaven is joyful."
Timothy, dressed in a black suit with a white carnation pinned to his chest, spoke gently and persuaded Elena.
Elena wiped her tears with a tissue and nodded slightly. "Yes, thank you."
"By the way, here is Annie's diary, her final keepsake. It was found in the hospital. Keep it as a memento."
It was a small palm-sized diary with a beige cover, and it had a heart-shaped little lock hanging on it.
Elena gratefully took the diary and put it in her bag.
"Thank you, Timothy. I'll be returning to S City in a couple of days. I hope you can take care of Annie's grave site for me."
"I should do that. Whenever you miss Annie, come and visit her so she won't feel lonely. After all, the Robinson family will also be your family in the future. Don't feel like an outsider. As for the news of Annie's passing, I haven't informed my father yet. His heart is weak, and he's receiving treatment abroad. I'm afraid he won't be able to handle such a blow. I'll slowly tell him when the time is right."
"I can understand."
It was the same for her too.
"I dare not tell my mother, I can only wait for time to slowly pass by," she thought to herself.
"Master, madam is here!" Rami whispered.
Timothy looked up and saw Daria entering with two bodyguards, fiercely barging in without any resistance from the gatekeepers.
Timothy quickly said to Elena, "Excuse me, I need to go check on my mother."
"Okay."
Why did Daria come to Annie's funeral?
Elena was taken aback as Daria swiftly made her way to the front of the casket. Suddenly, she grabbed a candlestick and smashed it towards Annie's portrait, all the while cursing loudly.
"Sarah, you wretched woman, you're finally dead! I'll kill you, I'll kill you..."
The crystal frame shattered to pieces, instantly destroying Annie's photograph.
What was Daria trying to do? Annie was already dead. Did she want to make sure that Annie didn't rest in peace?
"Stop, don't touch Annie!" Elena lost control and rushed forward, grabbing hold of Daria.
Daria's strength seemed unusually strong as she forcefully pushed Elena away, grabbing whatever she could find and throwing it at the casket.
"Stop, stop, someone stop her!" Elena shouted in agitation. Timothy quickly approached and tightly hugged Daria.
Noura supported Elena and whispered in her ear, "Miss Walker, don't get agitated. This woman seems to have gone crazy."
Elena calmed down and finally noticed how abnormal Daria was. Though she wore an exquisite dress, it was covered in dirt as if she had rolled on the ground. Her hair was disheveled, her face pale and grotesque. She was surrounded by fury, yet her eyes were empty and lost.
Timothy struggled to control her, but she kept kicking and biting her own son. The scene was chaotic, with several bodyguards surrounding them but afraid to approach, seemingly terrified of Daria.
Yes, she seemed truly insane. It was clearly Annie's portrait, yet she kept shouting Sarah.
As Elena's tense nerves slowly relaxed, she watched Daria being forced into a car by Timothy before speeding away.
After Annie's funeral, Elena returned to City S.
Life gradually returned to tranquility.
Everything happened so quickly, it felt like a nightmare. Before Elena could even gather her thoughts, her life had become a mess.
S City, Paris Bay
In the living room, Hassan had his long legs crossed, a gloomy expression on his handsome face. Elena stood in front of him, looking mentally exhausted.
"Sit down."
Hassan's voice always carried a dominating command. Elena didn't say anything and obediently sat down on the sofa next to him.
He reached out and gently caressed her cheek, his dark eyes shimmering.
A trace of heartache suddenly flashed in his eyes.
"You've lost weight!"
Elena lowered her head, looking at her toes for a long time before gathering the courage to say, "I want to live with my mother. She would be lonely by herself."
Hassan squinted his eyes, his expression turning cold.
"No!"
"Hassan, you can't be so unreasonable!" Elena couldn't control her anger, even though she knew this was the expected answer.
Hassan's perfect lips curled slightly, but his eyes were terrifying.
