Chapter 85 A Thrilling Surgery

"There really is another one! On the left side of the abdomen!" Elena exclaimed excitedly.

William looked at her in confusion, "Are you sure?"

"I'm sure!" Elena stated with absolute certainty. She had dealt with a similar injury on Hassan before.

"Very well, hand me scalpel number two. Nurse, where do you think the bullet fragment is?"

Under the gaze of everyone, Elena stepped forward and personally confirmed the approximate location.

Without hesitation, William made a perfect incision on the patient's abdomen with the scalpel.

"Ah... Ah... It hurts so much!"

The patient began to struggle as the effects of the anesthesia had completely worn off.

"Immediately secure the patient's limbs and prepare for a blood transfusion..."

William calmly gave instructions, but when the forceps probed inside, no bullet fragment was found.

Elena's face turned pale. The doctors around her cast doubtful looks her way. After all, she was just an intern nurse with no clinical experience. How could she know for sure.

"Are you blindly commanding here?"

"Director, we can't listen to her. If we continue like this, the patient will be in danger," a doctor began to remind William.

Elena was drenched in sweat, and the patient fainted in pain. On the heart monitor, the patient's heart rate kept dropping.

William stubbornly searched for the last fragment, while the doctors behind him continuously handed him gauze to wipe off his sweat.

Time was passing by slowly, with each second feeling like an eternity. Elena clenched her hands tightly; even her breathing lost its rhythm.

She glanced at the fragments of the bullet shell in the tray again, it was impossible; there should be one more piece.

"The patient is deteriorating!"

"Cover him with oxygen, give him a blood transfusion! Shock the heart!" William commanded calmly. His composure greatly shocked Elena. To be honest, if he weren't by her side, she would have fainted from the stress.

If she had really caused the patient's death, she would definitely feel guilty for the rest of her life.

"I found it!"

After what seemed like a century, William finally used tweezers to extract a small fragment, very tiny, about the size of a pinky nail. He placed the fragment in the tray, and only then did he relax.

"You stitch it up!"

Another surgeon took over the suturing, and the patient's condition gradually stabilized.

This surgery was thrilling! Elena's sterile gown was soaked with sweat, and even the hair under her cap was drenched. When she walked out of the operating room, she felt like she had been submerged in water.

"Go take a shower, I'll find you later!"

At the entrance of the operating room, William smiled approvingly at her and said gently.

Elena nervously took off her cap and nodded with a smile!

Her smile felt a bit stiff, and she was still in shock. She hadn't fully comprehended what had just happened.

After changing clothes, she walked into the office, where William had already made a cup of hot milk for her and was waiting in the conference room.

William had also changed into a white suit, and on his immaculate handsome face, there was a gentle smile.

Only now, he had regained the familiarity she knew.

Elena pulled out a chair and sat down, holding the cup of milk, she smiled at him. "Thank you!"

"Thank me for what?"

"Thank you for giving me this opportunity to experience all of this!"

"Actually, I am the one who should be thanking you! If it weren't for your reminder, I might have overlooked that bullet shell fragment!" William smiled somewhat helplessly. Although he demanded perfection in every surgery, it was still inevitable that many patients died on the operating table...

Every day, many patients came into the hospital, and there were also many who died in the morgue.

He was just a doctor, not a god! He couldn't save everyone, but after each failed surgery, it brought him a deep sense of frustration.

If it weren't for Elena's reminder today, he would have made another mistake.

"Do you want to know why I knew there was another fragment?" Elena asked with a mischievous smile.

"Hmm! Because at that time, I was still not willing to confirm it."

"You were uncertain, yet you still listened to me?" Elena was very surprised.

"I believe in you!" William said without hesitation.

"Why?"

William fell silent. He wanted to say that it was because he loved her, that he trusted her! But he couldn't say it like that; it would only make her resentful.

"It is said that a woman's intuition is accurate, so I believe in you!"

"In reality, you also want to know why, don't you?" Elena deliberately teased, seeing William looking at her with concentration. With a hint of pride, she continued, "Actually, the reason is quite simple. Those fragments cannot form a complete bullet casing. I noticed that one fragment was missing. Unless the patient's back has a hole for the bullet to pass through, incomplete fragments would not occur. But the patient isn't in that condition, so I believe the fragment should still be in their abdomen. Based on the force generated by the bullet's explosion, I think it should be in that location..."

It was just a simple puzzle to piece together, so why didn't he see it?

William looked at Elena with even more admiration. "It seems that inviting you to join Mayo Clinic was the right decision. You truly are perceptive. People like you are what we need."

"You flatter me! I don't have much clinical experience at all. Today was just a lucky guess."

"It wasn't just luck; it was inevitable. You must have had experience treating gunshot wounds before, right? Otherwise, how would you be able to determine the bullet's location?"

Without cutting open a wound, it was certain that one wouldn't know the depth of the bullet inside the human body. William was quite certain of this point.

"Well, you're right. I have performed such minor surgeries before! It was just a coincidence!"

William smiled and looked at his watch. "It's getting late. Let me treat you to dinner! Consider it a reward for you."

"Another time! I have things to do!"

William didn't force her. "Alright! There will be plenty of opportunities in the future."

She was already by his side. What was there to hurry about? William smiled and watched her leave.

It was already past six o'clock. Elena packed her bag and walked out of the hospital's doors.

Just as she was about to leave, a mocking voice suddenly sounded.

"Newcomer, you seem so arrogant!"

Elena turned around, and a woman was walking towards her. Judging by her age, she looked to be around thirty years old, and she was appraising Elena with malice in her eyes.

"Who are you?"

"We spent a few hours together in the operating room earlier. You've already forgotten so quickly?"

Elena then remembered; it was the assistant physician. Glancing at her work badge, her name was Julia!

Furrowing her brows, Elena asked, "Do you have something to find me for?"

Julia sneered at her. "I just wanted to remind you not to be too arrogant."

Elena chuckled lightly. This woman must be jealous!

William was young and handsome, and many female nurses and doctors in this hospital held a deep affection for him. It was evident from their attentive gazes.

"You're thinking too much! I haven't done anything out of line. The chief just trusts me, that's all."

Elena wasn't interested in continuing this conversation with such a woman.

Elena tried to leave after mentioning two names.

But Julia blocked her path again, glaring at her intensely.

"Believe it or not, I can make you leave from here within a month!"

Elena became annoyed as well. If she hadn't reminded William today, the surgery might have led to a second operation. She knew she did the right thing, so why was this woman targeting her?

"Oh really? Show me what you've got then! Let me see who should leave!"

Elena refused to back down, which infuriated Julia. She stomped her foot in anger.

"Fine, let's see who quits first!"

Elena shrugged her shoulders and walked past her, ignoring her completely.

So many boring women in this world. She was used to receiving such threats too many times.

Back at Paris Bay, Hassan hadn't returned yet.

Elena put down her backpack and entered the kitchen directly. "Noura, did you cook the soup for me as I asked this morning?"

"It's already done, just as Miss Walker ordered."

"Let me see!"

Elena finished cooking dinner and waited for him to come back and enjoy it.

Checking the time, it was already eight o'clock in the evening, and Hassan still hadn't returned.

"Miss Walker, would you like to have dinner first? The master might come back a bit later!" Noura suggested.

Elena wasn't hungry at all. She had been busy all day and felt tired but fulfilled.

"Well, I'll wait for him!"

She went upstairs, took a bath, changed into pajamas, and curled up on the sofa with a book. After reading for a while, she started daydreaming, propping up her chin. How wonderful would it be if everything truly turned out as William had said?

She could become a real doctor; she would definitely succeed!

At eleven o'clock at night, a black Rolls-Royce arrived at his mansion.

Hassan, with his tall figure, got out of the car, while Nabil drove it into the underground garage.

"Master, you're back!" Noura greeted respectfully as she came forward.

Hassan casually took off his suit and handed it to Noura. His handsome face displayed a hint of exhaustion from the busy day, which had drained him both mentally and physically.

"What about Elena?"

"Miss Walker is in the bedroom, reading. She said she'll have dinner when the master comes back!"

"Didn't I ask Nabil to inform you that I would be late today? And to ask her to eat first?"

"Well, Miss Walker is quite particular!"

Hassan stood in place, loosening his tie and handing it over to Noura. Then he strode towards the bedroom. No matter how tired he was, having her at home gave him a warm and peaceful feeling.

Hassan gently pushed the door to the bedroom open, and a faint smile formed at the corner of his mouth.

Elena was wearing a light green nightgown, holding a book in her hands, already curled up on the sofa, fast asleep like a little kitten.

He approached her silently, took the book from her hands.

"Come over here," he glanced over and was surprised to see that it was a nursing major from a foreign university. Was this woman planning to study abroad? And why was she looking at him like that?

He lowered his head and gently kissed her rosy lips. His tongue explored her mouth, stirring up a passionate response. He absorbed her sweet scent entirely into his mouth.

His breathing became increasingly heavy as his hands couldn't help but caress her body, following its curves...

This damn little enchantress, even her casual sleeping position was so seductive. It made his exhausted body feel rejuvenated and filled with renewed passion, as his movements gradually intensified.
