Chapter 84 Giving Her New Hope

Elena's thoughts were interrupted by her ringing phone. She picked it up, and the screen displayed a very arrogant and domineering phone number — it was Hassan!

"Hello, this is Elena!"

"Have you had lunch?" Hassan's voice was deep and magnetic.

"I already did!"

"What did you eat?" he asked further.

Elena thought for a moment and casually replied, "Just fast food!"

"Fast food won't do. I'll have Noura send you a meal later," he continued.

"That's not necessary! I think the food outside is tastier than what the chef at home makes."

Elena felt somewhat powerless. He was a grand CEO, yet he had nothing to do all day and specifically asked her about her lunch?

"CEO, the client is still waiting. When will you..."

"Let them wait. Can't you see I'm busy?" came Hassan's conversation with his secretary from the other end of the phone. Clearly, he was chatting with Elena, but he had the audacity to claim he was busy!

"If you're busy, I won't disturb you," Elena was about to hang up the phone.

"No hanging up!" Hassan's domineering voice came through again. "Secretary, please report our work progress to me."

"I..." Elena wanted to get angry but held it back. "I've familiarized myself with the working environment, organized some documents that just arrived, so the work is not going smoothly yet."

"I heard their dean is young and promising. You must not be alone with him!"

Elena was taken aback, his information was quite accurate, in a somewhat funny way.

"There are plenty of young and promising men out there. Do you think all of them would be interested in me? Besides, the dean has a girlfriend, who is far superior to me..."

"What girlfriend or rich second generation? In my eyes, they are all the same! The woman I choose will always be the best. I don't care about others."

"Do you have someone you fancy? Well, you're not allowed to look at others anyway."

The tone was extremely domineering, and Elena had a black line on her face.

"Got it!"

"Why didn't you ride Shadow to work this morning?"

"I can't bear to! I just want to keep it in the garage for now! If it gets scratched somewhere, it'll be a problem..."

"The car was bought for you to ride, but let's forget about it. I'll ride with you when I'm around! It would be troublesome if something happened to you alone."

"How could anything happen? I've been riding motorcycles for years already!"

"Even after years, can it still plunge into the water?" He deliberately exposed her scar.

When they first met, he intentionally used the car to collide with her, and she couldn't stop in time, so she had to plunge down the cliff.

"You dare to mention it! It was all caused by you. If it wasn't for you crashing into me, how could I have fallen down?"

"Wrong! If it was me driving at that time, I definitely wouldn't have fallen into the water!"

Hassan said confidently, but Elena laughed, "You think I didn't see your embarrassed state crashing into the wall? I witnessed how you bled in your efforts to win that car."

Hassan, embarrassed and furious, retorted, "Who told you that? Was it Nabil or Noura? I think I've been too good to them lately, letting them get carried away."

"Don't be like this. They didn't do it on purpose!" Elena quickly pleaded for Noura.

"After work, I'll cook for you. Please don't punish them, okay?"

After spending a long time with Noura, Elena had genuinely grown fond of them.

"Alright! Remember, keep your phone on 24/7! I want to be able to call you anytime, anywhere!"

Hassan said dominantly before ending the call.

Elena let out a sigh of relief as if a burden had been lifted. Although she wasn't under house arrest, she still had to answer calls 24/7.

"Elena!"

William's gentle voice came through, and Elena turned around, put down her phone, and smiled at him, "Dean, you're back!"

William sighed and chuckled, "There's no one else here now. You don't have to call me Dean! Go rest in the lounge for a while. You still have an hour before afternoon work."

"I'm not tired, really!"

It was her first day at work, so she couldn't bring herself to sleep. The lounge was actually William's small bedroom, and she didn't think she had the qualifications to sleep in his room.

William shook his head with a smile, "I hired you to work, not to work yourself to death. Your health is the most important thing, and women need sufficient sleep to look beautiful. Besides, there's usually not much happening in the afternoon. There are some minor surgeries in the surgery department. You can go and observe..."

"Can I really?"

For Elena, being able to interact with clinical patients during her internship was a good thing that would help her future career.

"Your dream is to become an outstanding doctor, not a nurse. So after you graduate, I plan to have you work as a staff member in our hospital and go to the UK for postgraduate studies. What do you think?"

Elena looked at him in shock. When she applied to this school, her grades weren't good enough, so she could only choose nursing as her major, and it was only a diploma program.

She had graduated in just three years. She believed that she would never have a chance with a doctor in this lifetime, but now William was offering her such a great opportunity. She was too overwhelmed to find the right words to express herself.

"But I'm not prepared at all!" she exclaimed.

"That's why you need to work hard from now on. Besides mastering your major, you'll need to accumulate more clinical experience. The requirements for theoretical knowledge are not as strict overseas, but the demands for clinical practice are more rigorous. So in this aspect, I'm giving you more opportunities," William explained confidently, unknowingly giving Elena more hope.

In reality, besides studying nursing, she actively learned various pathological and pharmacological knowledge, in her spare time. She even found time to study some knowledge of medicine. Her dream was to become a senior doctor, just like William, who could save patients' lives.

"You've been so kind to me, I don't know how to thank you," Elena said sincerely.

"It's nothing. If you're willing to stay and work for Mayo Clinic, it's also a benefit we offer to our employees. We're committed to improving the quality and skills of our staff." William replied.

Elena nodded seriously, understanding that William meant she wasn't special and didn't need to feel indebted to him. It was just an employee benefit that everyone had the chance to enjoy.

Finally, Elena breathed a sigh of relief. She didn't know that such benefits weren't available to every employee at Mayo Clinic. Of course, she only realized all of this many years later. William's caring intentions towards her were due to his deep love for her.

"Didn't Chloe come with you?" she asked.

"She went to work! She has a lot to do; she can't be with me all the time. Besides, I'm at work, I don't need her to bother me," William replied, his tone lacking the usual affection.

"Alright, then I'll go and get busy!" Elena said.

"You should take a rest first! Otherwise, you won't have energy in the afternoon," William reminded her, and finally, Elena obediently walked into the rest area.

There was only a single sofa bed in the room, but it was clean with white sheets and a faint scent. It was the unique smell of William, perhaps indicating that he usually slept here.

Elena lay down gently on the bed with her clothes still on while William stood by the door and closed it behind her.

After half an hour of nap, William came to wake her up.

"Get ready, change your clothes, and come with me!" he said.

"Okay!" Elena felt a new excitement rushing through her, energizing her whole being.

Once they entered the operating room, Elena knew it wasn't a small surgery. Several doctors were already dressed in sterile gowns and ready to begin.

"Dean, this patient has been shot in the abdomen. The bullets are located here..." The patient, whose wounds were already disinfected, lay flat on the operating table, while another doctor was introducing the case to William.

"The fragments of the bullets are scattered in three places, and it's highly likely that..."

"Internal bleeding, deep in the location where it occurred, makes this surgery quite challenging... The anesthesia is starting to take effect," another surgeon described briefly.

Elena nervously looked at the patient, a young man with a pale complexion who had already passed out, with a noticeable scar on his forehead.

"Prepare the oxygen mask for the patient immediately! The surgery is starting now!"

William quickly assigned tasks and then turned to the assistant physician next to him, saying, "Let her come over!"

Everyone's attention turned to the newcomer, and Elena blinked her eyes. She thought she was only observing, but unexpectedly, she was being asked to step forward. She broke out in a cold sweat.

"I will do it!"

"There's no time, just remember your task is not to hand over the surgical instruments incorrectly!"

"Alright, no problem!" Elena was full of confidence, albeit unable to differentiate the surgical instruments; her three years of study would have been in vain.

The other doctors didn't express much, except for the assistant physician who looked at her with deep resentment.

On her first day, she had seized her position, and it wasn't a pleasant feeling!

"Number one scalpel!"

"Hemostatic forceps!"

"Gauze!"

Everything proceeded with both tension and order, and Elena gradually calmed down.

The assistant physician stood by, spectating, assuming that Elena would make numerous mistakes. To her dismay, Elena didn't make a single one. She remained composed, which only intensified the assistant's displeasure.

The surgery was about to be completed. They were preparing to suture the wound when Elena looked at the fragments of bullet casings on the surgical tray and suddenly said, "No! There should be one more fragment!"

At this point, the surgery had already lasted nearly three hours, and the doctors were all exhausted. Furthermore, the effects of anesthesia were nearly depleted, and the patient started to feel pain. As long as the suturing was completed, this surgery would have a perfect ending.

Elena's remark irritated everyone.

"Assistant, we already removed all three bullet fragments. How could there be another one? Don't say such things here; it affects the patient's emotions," one surgeon said discontentedly.
