Chapter 41 Every Step is Wrong
The words "critical condition" hit Elisa's head like a hammer. She couldn't stand still and her phone slipped from her hand. No, Emma can't have anything happen to her!
"Elisa, what's wrong with you?" Robert noticed how pale she became instantly and grew anxious.
"To the hospital...I need to go to the hospital!"
Robert drove as fast as he could, and when they arrived, Emma had just come out of surgery. Earlier that morning, Emma experienced palpitations accompanied by shortness of breath. Fortunately, the doctors found it in time and saved her life.
"Your sister needs surgery as soon as possible," suggested the doctor.
Of course, Elisa wanted to do everything she could for Emma but it was going to cost a lot of money. Her father definitely wouldn't pay for it but she didn't have enough money either...
Emma on the sickbed seemed even thinner than before with a sharp chin that scared people. There wasn't any color on her pale face; at such a young age, she had to endure so much pain.
After surgery, Emma has pushed back into ICU again. Elisa stood outside with Robert and painfully recounted how Margaret tricked them both into replacing Hillary by marrying into The Iverson family.
Robert couldn’t believe this was something their family members who had been together for more than ten years would do; he asked incredulously:
"What about your father? Didn’t he object? You are his biological daughter."
"His silence speaks volumes," replied Elisa bitterly.
Looking at the anguish in Elisa’s eyes made Robert feel nothing but heartache for her.
In their college days, she excelled academically; an elegant waltz during freshman orientation even made many people consider her their goddess.
But now all she could do was live under Hillary's identity...
Robert knew that life in a wealthy family wasn't as easy as it seemed. After all, the truth would eventually come out and if The Iverson family found out about her true identity, they might punish her severely.
"Maybe this is one wrong step after another..." Elisa looked at her sister in the hospital room and laughed self-deprecatingly.
But Robert clenched his fists; he did sympathize with her but not only that:
"Elisa, don't forget I'm a lawyer now."
Elisa looked up puzzled.
"I can help you," said Robert firmly.
After leaving the hospital, Robert went back to his law firm first. Later on, Elisa received a text message from him:
Let's figure out how to get you away from The Iverson family and your stepmother's control together.
Seeing this made Elisa feel warm inside; she never expected that Robert would be willing to help her...
"Drip--"
A harsh car horn suddenly sounded in their ears. Elisa was startled and almost dropped her phone. When she looked up again, she saw Simon sitting in the car waiting for them for quite some time.
"You're following me!" Elisa stared at him incredulously; otherwise, how could he know she was at the hospital?
Hearing her unhappy tone of voice made Simon so angry that he directly opened the door and dragged her into the car.
"I haven't even asked why you ran off with that guy yet but now you're blaming me?"
Elisa was pressed onto the back seat unable to move while blushing red-faced shouting: "You can’t follow me either!"
"Well, then I want to know what are you doing here at the hospital?"
Elise didn’t want him to know about Emma’s existence so stubbornly replied: "It's none of your business!"
Her evasiveness made Simon more suspicious thinking that they were having an affair. His expression became more and more serious: "Who is he to you?"
"Robert!"
"Do you still want to fool me? Hillary, your graduation was from a small elementary school; how did you become classmates with Robert who graduated from a famous university?"
