Mate
Ashtons POV
It took longer than I expected, but amazingly no-one came to check on the prisoners. I have sent them all outside and to meet around the church at the edge of town or just head home of their own accord. There were less men than I expected, apparently some had died in the fight and their bodies disposed of in the river. I would have to make sure their families were looked after. Ezra came with me, working with his mate Tera to free scouts rather than running to save himself like the others. I had to admit he is growing on me, even in all this he is putting other people first and making jokes along the way. I can see why Ava likes him, he has a heart of gold. We make our way out, Tera knows the way and leads us quickly down the servants entrance.
I lead them to were Ava was, but she is not there now. I start to panic, searching the area but coming up empty.
“Whats wrong? Where is she?” Asks Ezra
“I don’t know, she was supposed to wait here.” I say
Ezra sniffs around and points to some scuff marks on the ground. “Someone dragged her away” He says, panic clear in his voice. “How could you leave her here alone!” His voice harsher and his face far from the friendly good natured one I had seen until now. He grabs my armour and pulls me closer to him.
“I, I don’t know what happened. She was in disguise, I don’t understand why anyone would take her.” I stammer, trying to process what happened myself.
“She doesn’t have a wolf like us, she wouldn’t have been able to fight!” Ezra shouts at me, his fists clenching like he wants to punch me.
His tone makes some passers by look up at us. “Shh not here, we need to get everyone out to safety and regroup. I promise I will get her back, but she came for you, she would want to know you were safe first.” Every part of me wants to storm the castle and kill everyone in sight until I find her, but I know that is not the smart plan. I might be able to kill them all, but not before they killed her. This requires more subtlety and stealth.
Ezra sighs and releases me. “I can’t leave her”
I look at Terra “You have someone else to take care of now. I know you love her, but so do I, I will get her back” my voice is full of conviction and Ezra smiles.
“I guess we are all breaking the rules now then. We can’t go back anyway, Loria doesn’t allow us to be together.”
My heart breaks for him, I wish I could tell him it will be allowed, but I can’t, I know my father too well. “Ava and I planned on running away together, maybe you could come too. I have something I need you to do first though. I need you to go to the meeting point, send the others home. I need you both to travel to meet my palace, find the head guard, his name is John, tell him that I released you, but I still have more work to do. Terra will need to be a witness, please pass on any knowledge of the Vampire kings activities to John, trust no one else. If John doubts you, tell him that I still haven’t told anyone about the frog, he will understand”
“Why don’t you send one of the other men, I can stay to help.” He asks
“because I trust you and because if I put your life at risk she would never forgive me”
“You really care about her huh?” Ezra asks
“More than I should, I am risking everything for her” I say honestly
“A week ago I would not have understood how you could love someone so different to you, but i’m not in a position to question you. Just don’t hurt her, or, prince or not, I will end you.” He threatens
“Trust me, if I hurt her, I will let you” I extend my hand and he shakes it firmly.
“Her scent is faint, she was probably taken a while ago. It is also mixed with something unfamiliar, if I had to guess I’d say some kind of tranquilliser. It would also explain why they dragged her. It leads back towards the castle, but then it becomes difficult to isolate with all the other scents around that busy area.”
“Thank you, I will head back in and find her. You get the men to safety and warn John.”
I watch them walk away and begin to walk back to the castle when Ezra calls back to me.
“I’m glad Ava found such a loyal mate!”
