The Elementals Chapter 10- rescue
We walk around the perimeter of the building, there are no signs of life and the door looks so rusted that even if it's locked I doubt it will take much to break open.
We make our way inside cautiously. The door is locked, but Sky bursts it open with a strong gust of wind and I stop it slamming loudly by cushioning it with some dirt. The building isn’t large, there is an open space workshop area and 2 smaller rooms off to the side. We don’t have to look far because Ember is tied to a chair unconscious in the open workshop space. We go to her and untie her quickly, Sky scoops her up and heads to the exit. As we are leaving, 5 large men enter the room and run towards us.
“Go! Get her out of here” I say to sky. He looks conflicted but realises he is mostly useless carrying Ember and leaves. With the door open I draw in as much soil from outside as I can and form it into balls, hurling them rapidly at the men. I manage to hit one right between the eyes and he falls to the ground. The others manage to dodge my attack, running towards me to counter attack. I dodge and fight back, desperately trying to get to the door myself. I give one a bloody nose and i’m pretty sure another will never be able to reproduce, but these guys are good and I take a few hits myself. I’m almost at the door though, just another few steps and I can run and scream.
“Enough!” A man shouts and draws a gun, pointing it straight at me. I’m good, but I’m not bulletproof so I reluctantly raise my hands in defeat. A rag is placed over my face and I feel myself slipping into unconsciousness. My last thoughts are hopes that Sky and Ember are safely far away from here.
...
Ember’s POV
I wake up in sky’s arms. He has a weird mask on, but I would know him anywhere. This is not a place I expected to be again, but after the last few days i’m only grateful. I have never felt so vulnerable in my life, first that creep spikes my drink, then the fire and those psychos kidnapping me. My brain is still trying to understand and process the impossible when Sky notices I’m awake.
“Oh good, you are awake. I’m going to put you down here. I need to go help Lily, but I will be right back” Sky says gently.
“Don't leave me, please” I manage to choke out the words, but my voice is hoarse.
“She is in trouble. I will be right back” Sky says, setting me down on my shaky legs and rushing off. I watch him run off across the street and out of sight confused. I’m not normally one to do as I’m told, but I stay put and wait for him, unsure of where I am or what is going on. I start to worry about him and even Lily. She was always more my rival than my friend growing up, but I would never want anything to happen to her. After what seems like hours but is probably only minutes, Sky comes back and pulls off his mask. The normal chill easy going sky is nowhere to be seen, his face is contorted in anger and I can tell he is holding back tears. Without hesitation I hug him tightly and then I pull away awkwardly, remembering i’m still mad at him for breaking up with me.
“Will you please explain what is going on?” I ask Sky.
“You send me a message so Lily and I came looking for you, we heard you scream and knew someone had taken you. We tracked you to here, but while I carried you out, they took Lily and drove off. What do you remember? Any details might help find her” Sky asks almost pleading with me.
“I don’t even know how long I have been out for. I remember going out, I was wearing this so at least they didn’t change my clothes. A guy bought me a drink and I didn’t feel right so I texted you. He dragged me to the alley, but I couldn’t fight, it was like I had no control over my limbs, I couldn’t even scream. I was so scared and angry at him. I’m not sure how, but he started screaming and then his clothes went up in flame. I managed to crawl away and almost made it home but then these men grabbed me. I had some of my control back so I fought them, but they knocked me out with this cloth and when I woke up I was in some workshop type place. Anytime they noticed I was awake they would drug me again. I don’t remember much and I still don’t understand what’s going on” I say getting annoyed.
“Please, we need to find Lily. You have to remember something useful” Sky shouts. He has never shouted at me before, not through all our fights and it makes me more annoyed.
“Why do you care so much, you wanted me, you got me back now leave the rest to the police, I’m sure they can find her” I shout back.
“Its not that simple, we can’t involve the police. She would know what to do, I wish she was here, I need her back, I didn’t even get to tell her….” Sky trails off his anger giving way to sadness and a tear falling down his cheek.
I look at him in shock. I should be used to this by now, admitting defeat to Lily, but it’s still hard. “You love her?” I ask, still hoping i’m wrong.
Sky nods ever so slightly and I crush the last bit of hope I had for us, turning away from him. “Wait Ember, you know we weren’t working long before I reconnected with Lily” Sky calls after me.
“Reconnected? Exactly what did you connect?” I shout at him, fury rising up in me at the idea he could have cheated on me. “Did you use that to connect” I point at his crotch and a small flame travels from my finger to his zipper. He pats it out quickly before his trousers can catch fire.
“It’s not like that. I don’t even know if she likes me back. Look, you can storm off and never speak to me again, but there is clearly more we need to talk about. I can explain that flame and I could use your help to get back at the assholes who took you” Sky says.
I take a deep breath, deep down I know that he wouldn’t cheat on me and and we never really worked as a couple. He is right, there are better people to be mad at right now. I also need to know what on earth I just did.
“She does like you, she has had a crush on you for as long as I can remember. I just wanted to beat her at something for once.” I admit quietly.
“She does?! What do you mean beat her? Oh. Ember I was never a competition. But if it makes you feel better, you did catch my attention first.” Sky says.
I know its petty, but it does make me feel better. “Of course I did, who could resist all this. Now if you explain how the hell I did that, I might remember something that can help” I say confidently brushing away all my feelings and locking them tightly away inside me.
“Thats a very long story, I will explain on the way back, but please tell me what you remember” Sky begs.
“They spoke about moving me to RussleBrack for assessment, there were at least 6 different faces I saw, most had local accents. Now please explain the fire shooting out of my hand! I have a lot of enemies to burn so I’d like to utilise it” I demand.
