Worlds Collide: Chapter 6 Test
“For gods sake John! Are you sure she is a dragon and not some kind of siren?” The king shouts, startling me and making me jump away from John.
John doesn’t look scared of the king at all, he is just grinning cheekily. “What can I say, she just couldn’t resist me” He replies, flicking his hair out of his face.
“She had better not be your mate! I swear, if this gets anymore complicated I’m abdicating and Ezron can deal with this mess.” The king grumbles.
I frown confused by his words, but relieved that he seems to have dropped some of the formalities.
“I wouldn’t mind that, the kid would make nap times a requirement for all staff and we would get our bonuses paid in chocolate. Don’t worry though, she is not my mate, but she does draw me into her” He winks at me and the king rolls his eyes.
The king turns his attention to me. “Miss Rain, you will be put to a test to determine your true intentions for coming here. I see that the fire did not hold you, so I ask that you please sit down and oblige us.” The king addresses me.
The doors open again and the queen comes in with another older woman. A small child, less than three years old holds the older womans hand.
“Nasty dragon lady not hurt nana!” The child says waving his finger accusationally at me and I can’t help but smile at his cuteness.
“Sorry, he insisted on keeping her safe.” The queen apologises, more to the king than me.
“You would be wise to heed Ezron’s warning Rain, hurting Jasmine will have severe consequences” The king warns, but honestly the child was more effective, now I wouldnt dare risk anything that might put the boy in danger.
“Dont worry, I will not hurt your nana.” I say gently crouching down to the boy's level so he can see I mean it. “What is your test?” I ask, rising again.
“It is quite simple and it will not hurt at all.” The woman, Jasmine says and quickly puts her fingers on my temples. She stays like that for a minute and I start to wonder what is going on as everyone in the room stares at us, waiting for something. The silence is thick in the room, everyone appears to be on edge, except for Ezron, who just sucks his thumb oblivious to the tension.
Jasmine steps away from me and turns to the room. “Her intentions are pure… Well those not featuring John anyway. She only wants the knowledge to help her friend Lily and she will leave.” Jasmine announces.
“How did you know her name?” I ask suspiciously, narrowing my eyes at her.
“My mother can read minds when she is touching you. I’m sorry for the invasion of privacy, but we had to be sure you were not here to start a war. Now that you have been cleared, we will arrange a more comfortable place for you to stay while we learn from each other.” Queen Ava explains.
“Thank you, your majesty. I hope I did not shock your mother too much with my thoughts. I’m sorry I do not know any of the customs here should I bow or something?” I ask
“I takes more than that to shock me sweetie. I think that, given that you are currently in charge of your own kingdom, that we can do away with the formalities, my daughter is not a fan of them anyway.” Jasmine answers.
I laugh, breaking the tension. I feel relieved that I seem to have passed the test and I might actually get what I came looking for. I have so many questions, but I get the feeling that now is not the time for them. I think I need to build their trust in me before I pry too much.
“You are welcome to stay as a guest in our palace, but I will assign a guard to supervise your stay as a precaution. I hope you understand.” The king says.
“I volunteer” John says quickly and far too eagerly.
“Clearly you can’t be trusted. Besides that your fire does nothing to her. Juan will watch her, since he brought her in and so can obviously handle her” The king says with a tone of finality that even John seems to respect.
“Well I can at least show her to her room” John says and offers his arm to escort me out of the room where, I have no doubt, that my inner most thoughts are about to be discussed thoroughly by the royal court. I just hope that Ezron's presence helps filter out some of the more embarrassing ones.
