Worlds Collide: Chapter 18 Shifts
I’m so grateful when we make it out of the mirrored section and into what looks like an orchard. It is much more bright and open with interesting fruit trees lining the way. I take advantage of the light to stop to check the map, trying to memorise the next sections routes. I look up just in time to see Juan reaching up to pick a large red apple from one of the trees. Simultaneously, the trees change, folding their branches down into a dome which traps Juan inside, the leaves cover him over and become pointed and sharp to prevent escape.
“Juan! Can you hear me are you ok?” I call out, rushing over to him.
I get no response so I draw my sword to try to cut him free. It clangs loudly against the leaves, but does no damage. A small butterfly floats out of the tree past me, making me pause.
“It’s ok princess, put down the sword” Juan says, as the butterfly transforms into Juan in front of me.
“What was that?” I question.
“I would think that it is fairly obvious that I’m a shifter now” Juan says
“So what exactly does that mean?” I ask.
“It means that I can change into anything I want to, as long as I have seen it.” Juan explains.
“Oh well now this makes sense” I say gesturing to his naked chiselled body.
“What do you mean?” He asks confused
“Well no-one looks that good, you obviously just change your body with the shifting power” I say.
He laughs a musical laugh “No, this is my real body. My father taught me never to be ashamed of who I was. This is hard work and good genetics.” He boasts flexing his muscles.
I blush at my admission and partially from the excitement building in my core. “I don’t know if I could resist the temptation to change my body if I had that ability. You know make some things bigger, some smaller and cover some scars” I admit.
“There is nothing you need to change Rain” He says seriously.
“Everyone has some things they want to change” I say
“True, but the right person will never expect you to change for them and it is important to find the right person for the real you.” He says looking into my eyes.
“Well with a body like yours, I’m sure you have a lot of right people.” I tease
“Look who is talking, at least my nakedness is not by choice, you on the other hand parade the corridors naked.” He answers
“Touché” I say smiling like a fool at his subtle compliments.
As we walk the orchard fades into a swampy aesthetic with the path turning boggy. We come to a stop as a small pond blocks the path. Juan dips his toe in the water to test it and instantly transforms into a small green frog.
“Stop messing about and change back, we are almost at the end.” I chastise him.
I get no response. “Juan, I’m serious. Turn back, this isn’t funny” I add. Still no response.
I bend down to look at the frog more closely, it still has Juan’s eyes which are looking at me with panic. “Can you change back?” I ask. The frog shakes his head.
“Well fuck, what now” I say, as I lift him up and move us away from the frog pond.
I try drawing the water off him, but it doesn’t change him. I search around for solutions, but the only other one I can think of is completely stupid. Still in the absence of any better ideas, I brace myself, close my eyes and place my lips on the frog.
I expect it to be slimy and disgusting, but it is far from it. It is warm and tender and delicious. I open my eyes to see that I’m not kissing the frog, but Juan. Naked. Human. Juan. His eyes are still closed as he snakes his arms around my waist and deepens the kiss. I push my body against his, wanting more and feeling him respond. Suddenly, Juan pulls away.
“Sorry, that was inappropriate… Thank you for fixing me” He says.
“You don’t need to apologise, except maybe for stopping” I say.
“Be careful what you wish for.” He says, turning to walk on.
I part the water in the pond for us to walk through. The maze opens out into a large meadow with the blue glowing portal visible at the end. As I walk towards it, Juan grabs my hand and pulls me to the ground.
