The Elementals: Chapter 2 awkward meeting
I manage to make it through a whole week of classes and work without any terribly awkward moments and only having to hide behind the bar at work once to avoid an ex. Working in a popular student pub means that unfortunately most of my former conquests show up here at some point, luckily I work in the kitchen and only have to come out occasionally to collect dishes. It is not the most glamorous job, but it pays well and since I have to pay my own rent I don’t really have a choice. Half way through my shift I get a text from Rain saying that she will be picking me up after I finish and we are heading straight to a club night. I have send her about 10 messages protesting this, but none have been read which I know means that I will be forced into this.
She walks in just as I wash my last dish for the night looking incredible in flowing blue dress that perfectly matches her eyes with her long brown hair sitting perfectly straight and shining even in the dull kitchen light. I look down at my jeans and t-shirt, but before I can protest she throws a bag at me and shoves me to the bathroom to change. The dress she brought is one of my favourites of hers to borrow, a skater style dress in a deep red. There is no helping my hair, so I just leave it to its natural wave and I have no idea what most of the make up she brought does, so I opt for a basic lipstick and mascara look.
“Ok I will come with you, but I’m not drinking” I say as I emerge from the bathroom, resigned to my fate.
“You always say that so I’m not even going to argue, I will just wait for your will power to crumble naturally” Rain says smiling sweetly.
“We have karate class early tomorrow so we can’t stay out too late anyway” I try to reason with her.
“Oh please, we both got our black belts years ago, the only reason we go now is to burn off the alcohol calories and ogle the boys” Rain retorts.
I sigh and allow her to navigate me to the club. On the way she fills me in on the hot 4th year guy who invited her who she can tell me very little about personality wise but can describe in detail the tone of his six pack. I roll my eyes at her, not that I am much better, I barely know names of some of the people I have been with.
As we walk up to the club there is a very large queue, but its too cold and i’m too sober for that so I pull my dress down a bit to reveal more of my boobs and weave through the crowd confidently to the bouncers, pulling Rain behind me. They smile at me and let us through, this is as close to a superpower as I have. Not quite the super strength or ability to fly that I had dreamed of growing up, but better than nothing and certainly better than freezing our asses off in the queue.
Once inside, I instantly question how anyone comes to clubs sober, they are way grimier when you can see straight. Rain pulls me to a table with a group of people I don’t recognise. A large guy gets up and hugs her and pulls her off to the dance floor. I’m not sure whether to follow her or not when a familiar voice draws my attention.
“Lily! It’s good to see you again, do you want me to get you a drink?” Sky asks.
I turn to look at him and have to consciously stop my jaw from dropping. That is not the boy I knew, my sky was skinny and gangly, the man sitting before me is buff and toned. Rain failed to mention that about our last meeting. I’m so shocked I can’t even answer, I just nod and he walks off to the bar.
I take the time to compose myself. It’s just Sky, you used to be best friends, you know how to talk to him. I scan the room for Ember, but there is no sign of her. I’m grateful for that, we were friends, but we would fight a lot and we always seemed to be on opposite ends of the argument.
Sky returns with 2 drinks in his hands. “This my friend is called an ultra-violet. I warn you it is very strong so go easy”
I take the drink and down it quickly, my nerves getting the better of my good intentions.
“That has like 5 shots in it, it didn’t even phase you. Guess my little Lily has grown up.” He teases.
“Oh please just cause you got all ripped doesn’t mean you can call me little, I’d still beat you in a fight” I say annoyed.
He smirks, “I’d like to see that”
“Is that a challenge?” I ask
“More like an invitation” He says leaning closer to me. I look into his light blue eyes and feel myself getting dangerously drawn in. No, this is wrong, he has a girlfriend, time to step back.
“Well Rain and I joined the karate class here, you are welcome any time you feel up to the challenge. Oh and Ember of course, she was always good at fighting too.” I say
“All ember and I seem to do is fight these days. She has broken up with me more times that I can count. I think her latest phrase is that we are on a break.” He says sadly.
“I’m sorry to hear that, you guys make a sweet couple. Where is she tonight anyway?” I ask
“She is out with some guy from her chemistry class, she never takes long to move on when we split up.” He try to seem nonchalant but I notice his fists balling up in the table.
“Oh come on, you look like you got injected with super soldier serum, I’m sure you could have any girl here.” I try to lighten the mood.
“Thats it, that is exactly what I need!” Sky says suddenly perking up.
I feel a bit deflated and disappointed that he is going to leave and go chase girls, but I’m glad he has cheered up. I look for Rain on the dance floor, ready to go and join her and leave sky to it. I find her grinding up against her suitor when sky takes my hand and pulls me out of the club.
