The Elementals: chapter 4 a good apology
The next morning we head to Karate. Rain fills me in on her night with Grey and how she is going at his pace and seeing where it goes, but I can tell she likes him since she has actually bothered to learn his name. We are half an hour late, but Mr Elm just smiles at us. He is mostly just grateful that we are here in the morning which is a miracle in itself.
“My two best students have arrived, not that they will remain the best if they do not put in the hard work to train” He lightly chastises us as always as we take our places. Mr Elm was our old teacher in the orphanage, he learnt to teach Karate as a way of managing the fighting amongst the children. Sky always got picked on by the older boys, but the karate not only taught him how to defend himself, but it taught the older boys respect. Mr Elm left to come to Edinburgh to teach a year before us, there were rumours that he had an affair with our old headmistress and had to leave quickly so took the first job he could find. He is a great teacher though and it is nice to have a familiar face in a new place. Our loyalty to him is mostly why we keep coming here.
As the class ends Rain and I stay behind to help clean up. The door opens and I turn to see Sky. Rain calls Mr Elm over to discuss something in the other room and I silently curse her for leaving me to deal with this alone.
“So you did want to fight after all” I say.
Sky holds up his hands in surrender “Actually I came to apologise. I didn’t have your number, but I remember you mentioned this class so I hoped to find you here.” Sky explains.
“Hmm and what are you apologising for?” I test.
“I’m sorry that Ember interrupted and that I let her distract me from the masterpiece that we were watching. I didn’t want you to leave and I do want to start our movie nights again” He says.
“Hmm, it’s not much of an apology” I huff.
“Oh that’s not the best bit.” He opens the bag he was carrying and reveals 2 cups and a large assortment of doughnuts.
“Ok you are forgiven” I say and I grab the cup of tea and pick out a white chocolate covered doughnut. Rain sweeps back in to take the other cup and grab a doughnut for herself.
“That was for me, but ok I guess I owe you that for calling you so late last night.” Sky says.
“Exactly, you have no idea what you interrupted” Rain says and we laugh.
“I guess you had a good night with my friend then” Sky says.
“I’m not one to kiss and tell. What about you, what happened with Ember?” Rain asks.
“I don’t know, one minute she wants me back, the next she accuses me of cheating on her and the next she is sleeping over again. I wish she would make up her mind.” Sky says sadly.
“You know you can make up your mind too. If you don’t want to deal with all her drama then you can break up with her” I say, getting angry again.
“I don’t want to hurt her though.” Sky says and my anger dissipates replaced with understanding of his situation.
“She would definitely go all psycho on you if you did, remember when she shaved off Jakes eye brows because he called her fat?” Rain interrupts and lightens the mood. We all laugh and reminisce about our antics living together.
“So do you want to come back to mine for a movie night, there are still some doughnuts left and I can order pizza?” Sky offers us
“Oh I can’t sorry, I have an essay due.” Rain excuses herself.
“I’m not sure I’m ready to face Embers wrath” I say.
“She won’t be there, she is working til late tonight.” Sky says.
“Hmm, well ok then if you are buying the pizza.” I say.
We say goodbye to Rain and I follow him back to his flat.
“What do you study again?” I ask him
“I’m studying astronomy, I always loved the stars and now I’m learning about all the mysteries of space. What about you?”
“I struggled to pick, but I went with Botany. Biology was always easy for me and I love being in the garden so I figured I’d study that.” I explain.
“And how are you finding it so far?” Sky asks
“Last year I partied more than I studied, but I passed everything and this year the content is much more interesting. How about you, 4th year must be really stressful?”
“I actually did a lot of my dissertation over the summer when I worked in the observatory so I’m ahead of schedule for once. I never really get too stressed, things just work out themselves.” He says.
“And what are your plans for when you graduate?” I ask.
“Oh I don’t know, I try not to think too far ahead.” He says carefree.
“I don’t understand that, I have so many plans and back up plans. Trips I want to take, things I want to do, a life I want to have.” I explain.
“Hmm well maybe you can help me plan then. Right now though all I want you to plan is a regular movie night and what pizza you want to order” He says and I smile.
We manage to watch 2 films before it’s almost time for Ember to come home and I make mom excuses to leave, but I leave my number for Sky so we can stay in touch.
