Worlds Collide: Chapter 2 Chaos and Organisation

As much as watching Hades and Ember together makes me want to gag, I am very grateful for their help right now. Hades has been running the fire kingdom pretty smoothly and so that is one less thing I need to worry about. The earth kingdom council members also have it covered since they had been running it themselves without a leader for a long time before Lily took over. That just leaves me with the coordinating PR for the human world and running the water kingdom which, since I’m a water dragon, actually suits me best.
The human world is taking the existence of dragons surprisingly well so far, I think our little crime fighting team have a lot to do with that, the press are acting like we are superheroes which is kind of nice and I’m training a whole new squad of recruits to take over from us to keep up the good work. The training itself can be a bit exhausting, but the costume design really makes it worth it, seeing my beautiful creations bring out a persons style really makes me feel proud. Mostly, now I just supervise some of their missions to make sure they are representing our species well, but I do kind of miss getting to kick the asses of assholes. We have been able to expand beyond just Edinburgh and now have sub-divisions in cities all over the world. The new trainees have been helping the police and thankfully there has been no hunter attacks to deal with.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure they area still out there. There have been some news stories trying to make us out as the evil villains which I can guess were written by hunters, but for now we are winning.
Taking out their man on the inside really helped diminish the hunters. The former water kingdom leader, Ryder, was helping the hunters and has now been imprisoned for life because of it. Sky took over from his estranged father, but it has not been easy. The man was a complete control freak and so no-one else knows anything about how he was running the kingdom. Sky has done his best since taking over, but there is still a lot of work to do.
I can’t complain about my office though. I have always loved the sea and that’s why I chose to study marine biology at university, which I have had to put on hold at the moment with everything else going on. Living and working in the water kingdom has really increased my motivation to finish my dissertation so I’m hoping that I will go back to it soon.
The castle lies in the deepest part of the ocean, which you would expect to be dark and disturbing, at least that is what all the textbooks I have read say, but with my dragon eyes seeing better in the dark, it is actually beautiful and full of life. The castle itself looks like something out of the little mermaid, with conch shell shaped towers and the nacre of shells and peals decorating the walls, it looks extravagant and magical. The castle is set up like one of those fancy underwater hotels in Dubai, it is air tight with a supply of air being pumped in by a high tech system of pipes that I don’t understand. I’m grateful though, because while our dragon forms have gills to breath underwater, our human forms do not and it is pretty difficult handling the finer details of running a kingdom in dragon form, signing paperwork is nearly impossible!
Unlike the fire kingdom which is bustling with life, the water dragon kingdom is much quieter. Most water dragons that choose to live here, rather than the human world, live in small dispersed villages. Even this grand castle which has almost a hundred rooms is mostly empty except from the 2 other council members who each have their own private wing and a few staff members to run the place. Ryder, the old leader, definitely liked his privacy, it probably helped with all his scheming. In the first week here alone, I found evidence of him stealing funds from the council for his own gain and files on people that were a potential threat to his status. Thank god he never knew about Sky being born, otherwise that boy would have definitely been blackmailed or worse ended up killed like Lily’s dad.
I’m choosing to stay and work in one of the many immaculate guest suites rather than the leaders chambers because sleeping in a rapist/murderers bed was never going to happen, even if he is locked away and it has been cleaned.
My room is beautifully decorated with pearls lining the walls in a floral pattern and has an incredibly comfy king sized bed. A bed which has only been used for sleeping in, as I’m taking a sabbatical from sex until I find my own prince charming to treat me right. Lily says I need to stop thinking of myself as the girl you take in the bathroom stalls and more like the girl you take home to meet your parents, so I’m trying. To be honest my resolve would probably have cracked by now if I wasn’t basically in isolation down here.
It is amazing how much more productive I am though when I’m fully rested and not hung over. In the 2 weeks I have been here, I have researched and written more policies and procedures than I would ever have thought possible.
Plus, since I’m not doing my normal night time routine, it means I have plenty of time for reading before bed to try to find information on crossbreed children to help put Lily’s mind at ease. This is another reason for me staying in the water kingdom, because Ryder had acquired the largest collection of books on dragons in the world. I guess he used this knowledge for more nefarious purposes, but I’m hoping it might shed some light on my future god child.
There have definitely been some interesting reads including a dragon karma sutra, mythology origins and religious lore, but there has been few references to what happens when dragons of different types breed. Annoyingly when I chased up the few cases recorded of dragons mingling, they had either died young or never had children. I really don’t understand how there are so few incidences of it, but I guess that is what segregation and fear does to people. There is actually surprisingly little written about dragon births at all and why some children become dragons and some human is not well understood.
I settle into my bed in my oversized nightshirt with a mug of hot chocolate ready for tonights book. My bedtime story for tonight is called the origin of creatures written by professor Vladimir in the 1700s. I flick through its browned pages and try to decipher the cursive handwriting. There is an introduction which bears a striking resemblance to Darwins explanation about evolution, but I double check and this book is dated around 100 years prior to Darwins origin of species. Vladimir writes about creatures evolving to fit different niches and the genes of the strongest being passed on. What peaks my interest most is the section on cross species mating where he hypothesises several theories and describes experiments to test them. I start to feel hopeful that this is what I’m looking for when he writes an example about vampires and werwolves mating and I throw the book away frustrated.
“Of course, it's just some kook rambling about myths, I must have picked it from the fiction section accidentally” I grumble to myself. “Well, I at least hope it's one of those saucy romance novels, I could get behind a love story between a vampire and a werwolf, forbidden love and all that.” I say picking up the book again and giving it a second chance.
After reading it for several hours, I’m still not sure what to make of the book. Its definitely not a story book, the style and information is very dry and factual and the content is definitely of a good scientific standard, including accurate descriptions of concepts that were not published until much later in history. My brain refuses to accept that things like vampires might be real, but then again until a year ago I didn’t think dragons were real and then I found out I was one. I’m definitely intrigued by this book and the author and there is much more I want to know. However, feeling my eyes straining to stay open and fighting off a yawn, I have to give into sleep in hope of sexy vampire dreams.
