Worlds Collide: Chapter 14 Professor
As we walk to the library to meet the professor, I begin to feel nervous remembering John's warning.
“What is he like?” I ask
“He is very old fashioned, he used to be king and he was a strict ruler. My family knew him well though and when he respects you, he becomes warmer.” Juan says.
“John warned me that he was dangerous” I confess.
“He is, but he also worships Ezron and since the child is rather taken with you, I’d say you are safe.” He says
“Maybe I should have brought him with me to this meeting then” I joke wondering whether it’s too late to get the young prince as a bodyguard.
Juan leans in close to me as we reach the door and whispers “I will protect you princess” which sends a shiver down my spine.
I want to argue about needing his protection, but the professor greets me before I can.
“Ah Rain, nice to formally meet you.” He says looking at me over the top of a book like a teacher.
I curtsey “Likewise Sir, it’s an honour. I didn’t expect to actually get to meet Professor Vladimire in person”
“Well technically you should not have. Those books you read should not have been left behind and it is a small miracle that you got here at all. Nevertheless, I hope I can be of some use.” He gestures for me to sit at the desk with him.
“I don’t know how much you know about us. Where I’m from there are different types of dragon, for each element. People say that different types shouldn’t pair up and we have no research on what happens if they do and the outcomes for the children. I just want to know if you have any information on whether different types can mix” I ask.
“Well of course they can. As long as there is human in their DNA somewhere, any species can mate. We have many examples of vampires and fae or any number of combinations successfully mating here. Dragons are no different and different types of dragon are even more likely to be compatible.” He states like this is something a child would know.
“Then why do our people believe that it is almost impossible to have mixed children?” I ask.
“Fear is probably the easiest answer. It only takes a few bad experiences for people to blow them out of proportion. That is why I value science so highly. I’d say that the reason some people had trouble conceiving was due to the mate bond. Once mates are connected, no others can bare children.” He says
“What is the mate bond?” I ask confused.
“It is a special connection, a soulmate. There is only one for every being. Different species experience it differently, wolves feel it very intensely, shifters and fae less so. I don’t know what it is like for a dragon. But in every species that I have studied, before meeting a mate individuals can have children with anyone, but after meeting a mate only the mate can sire children.” He explains.
“What about the children? Are they healthy? Is there a way to know what power they will have?” I ask.
“Children are normally healthy, although any pregnancy can have complications. As for predicting powers, that is more tricky, there are many gene interactions at work. Usually the child’s power has some connection to the parents, but not always. Take Ezron for example, from what we know at the moment he appears to be able to create elements from nothing. His father can manipulate elements that already exist and his mother can create life and he so seems to be a combination of their powers. However Ava’s powers were more random, as she did not inherit the wolf of her father or the mind reading skill of her mother. There is a lot of complex genetic interactions that I’m currently studying, but I’m years away from giving a reliable prediction I’m afraid.” He explains.
“At least their baby will be healthy, that is the main thing.” I sigh in relief.
“I have been looking back through my records and I believe that your species of dragon was a mix of the pure dragons, which we had here, and of the fae. So I would say that the likelihood is that the child will be like you, but there is a small change that it will manifest new powers like Ava, depending on the exact genes crossed.” He adds.
“Wait so we are not just dragons?” I ask confused again
“No, you, like many here are crossbreeds. Although after many generations of isolation and inbreeding, I’d say you are probably classed as a separate species now. We could call you a drae or a fragon maybe” He hypothesises, scribbling notes on a pad.
“Well given that the original dragons are extinct here, I think we can stick to dragon.” I say, not wanting to change my identity again or deal with an amended press release to the human world.
“I suppose you are right.” He says.
“Thank you for your time, it was most informative. As promised, I will leave now.” I say formally, backing out of the room and wanting some time alone to think everything over.
“Should you have any issues, please return.” He says and then returns to his book which I take as my chance to leave.
We walk in silence back to my room and I throw myself on the bed. I let all that I have learnt sink in. So being half dragon and half fae kind of makes sense given what I have seen here. Knowing my god child will be healthy is a reassurance. Realising that I actually have a destined soulmate, that is harder to process. As if it wasn’t hard enough to find a decent human to love me, now I need to find the literal perfect one and that seems somewhat impossible. I also don’t want to leave this place yet, I mean sure they attacked me and have basically had me under surveillance the whole time I have been here, but its felt like an adventure and a welcome holiday from the responsibilities and paperwork I now need to return to. Sucking it up as I always do and accepting reality for what it is, I stick my head out the door to Juan.
“Please inform the queen that I will leave first thing tomorrow. I would like to say goodbye to everyone before I leave.” I say and he nods briefly in response.
