Chapter 58: Bryn
I catch up with Sawyer, and Maddox outside just as our ride is pulling up. Sawyer helps Maddox in first and then steps aside so I can slip in. My confusion from what the guys said is pushed aside when I look Maddox over. He seemed fine, but now he looks a little off.
“I think he has a concussion.” I tell Sawyer when he climbs in on the other side of me.
“I would be surprised if he didn’t. Davis hit him hard. Asshole.” He grumbles.
The driver starts toward the hospital and doesn’t bother with making conversation.
“We’ll be at the hospital soon. Try to stay with us until then, even if you start to feel sleepy. Okay?”
He has his head laying against the window but turns it enough to flash me a weak smile. “Promise pretty girl.”
I raise a brow at him. He was about to fall asleep before I told him not to.
“He’ll be fine, B. It’s part of hockey.” Sawyer says dropping his hand on my leg and giving it a squeeze.
Looking at it reminds me of what he said before. I don’t know why, but we need to talk about it.
“What you guys said before…what did you mean by it? Did you guys…share women before?” It feels weird asking this, but I have to know.
Do people really do that? I mean, sure, I’ve read reverse harems before, but that’s a book. This is real life and as far as I know, there aren’t many people open to that and even in poly relationships, it’s the guy who has other girlfriends.
Sawyer shrugs. “It was a drunken joke we made once. There was a girl at our old school who had a bunch of guys following her around. We thought it was funny and said we wanted to chase a girl around like that, but we never tried it. Don’t be jealous Little Bee.”
I scowl at him. “I’m not jealous.” I totally am, but he doesn’t need to know that. “Why would two guys want to share the same girlfriend?”
“Hell if I know. I guess if you’re sharing with a friend, then it could be fine and if you’re not into it, then don’t try it.” He makes it sound so simple.
“They must get a lot of dirty looks walking around and messing with the same girl.” I point out.
“Some, but they didn’t seem to care. Why would they? They’re not hurting anyone and people need to mind their fucking business.”
I can’t help but watch him while he answers each of my questions. He doesn’t seem uncomfortable about the idea of a harem situation. I don’t know why I care how he feels about it or why I’m so curious.
“Those guys were lucky. That girl was going to be a lawyer and was top of our class. They were going to be living large.” Maddox says out of nowhere.
“So you approved because they would be living off her success?” I ask, lifting a brow at him. “No wonder.”
He chuckles. “Hey girls like to marry successful men and live a lavish life. Why can’t men?”
I consider that. It made sense, but why does more than one guy want to be with the same woman? I just can’t figure that out.
“We never found a girl we liked enough to try with.” Maddox adds with a slight slur.
“That’s because puck bunnies aren’t looking for a long-term thing where they have to deal with personalities and needs. People think guys hate commitment, but they aren’t the only ones.” Sawyer replies.
“You found a good one, though. Married with a baby on the way, I’d say you’re doing well for yourself, Becket. I’m a little jealous. Maybe if I met you first, Bryn, I would have had a chance with you.” He winks at me and I have to fight back from smiling.
He’s charming and sweet. A dangerous combination.
Sawyer laughs. “You’re the only guy I would agree to even touching Bryn. So you’re lucky I like you or I would have given you a black eye with that concussion.”
“Are you serious right now?” I screech at him. “You’ve beat up two guys because of me and threatened a delivery guy for asking me out! Now you’re joking around about sharing me with him? Who are you and what have you done with the real Sawyer? The one who is crazy jealous and has a terrible temper.”
He shrugs again. “They’re different. Me and Maddox were roommates and I trust him with my life.”
“Same bother.” Maddox says, holding his fist out in front of me.
They do some quick hand shake thing and laugh. “You guys are crazy.”
“What? Are you telling me if I said you could kiss Maddox or even hook-up with him you wouldn’t want to? I’m not into dudes and I can see he’s fucking hot.” Sawyer
My jaw drops, and I gawk at him. “Sawyer! I would never cheat on you. What are you talking about?” I feel a little hurt that he would think I would.
“It wouldn’t be cheating if I’m okay with it.” He says.
“Sawyer…I would hate to see you with another girl. I don’t want our marriage to be like that.” I shake my head and try to work my thoughts out.
“I wouldn’t want any other girl.” Sawyer says lifting his arm and wrapping it around my shoulder.
“Then why would you be okay with me to be with another guy if I wanted to?”
I emphasize the word ‘IF’ because that seems crazy. Sure, I’ve seen guys who are attractive and even met some I could easily have dated if I wasn’t with Sawyer, but all of that isn’t serious. I love Sawyer and we’re already enough…why would I ask for more? How could I keep more than one guy satisfied? Also, I’m about to get even more huge as this baby get’s bigger. What other guy would be attracted to a pregnant woman?
“I wouldn’t be okay with just any guy. Like Maddox here, I’d be cool with it because I know and trust him. I know he wouldn’t hurt you, and we’re friends, so there’s trust.”
“Sawyer…that’s just- “
“Here we are, folks.” The driver says.
“Thanks man.” Sawyer says throwing the door open and leaving it open for me.
He jogs around the back of the car to help Maddox out. The poor guy looks exhausted.
“Come on, man, let’s get that head looked at. I think it’s swelling.” Sawyer says and Maddox shoves him.
“Like hell it is.”
“Oh yeah, your head is just oddly shaped. I forgot.” Sawyer teases.
“Hey ma’am.” I stop from sliding out and look at the driver. “It’s not any of my business, but I wanted to say that life is short. You should be allowed to love the way that makes you happy. If that means dating both of those handsome lads, then you could do a lot worse. You’re a beautiful girl and deserve to have every man in this world fawning after you.”
My face heats up, but I smile at the older man. “Thank you.”
“Have a good evening.”
I slide out of the car and quickly close the door. He gives me one more wave that I return. I watch him go, rolling his words around in my head. Sawyer is the love of my life…I know that, and I still think this whole idea of multiple men being involved with one woman is crazy, but is it really? He’s right, who cares what people think? I’m not saying I would actually consider it, but he seems okay with Maddox being a part of our relationship.
This has come from nowhere and thrown my head into a state of pure confusion. I shouldn’t have asked about it at all because now I’m going to be wondering. This isn’t the time. Maddox is hurt and I need to be with Sawyer while we deal with this. I still can’t believe how Maddox’s team treats him. He can’t stay there. We need to find a way for him to come with us back home. He might be okay this time, but he could have been seriously injured and his team wouldn’t have even noticed. I’m not okay with that.
I head through the ER double doors and look around. The guys are sitting against the wall in the corner of the waiting room. The place is pretty crowded, but they seem to have left a space for me between them. For some reason, my dirty mind runs with that thought and I curse myself for being such a pervert before I join them.
“Everything okay?” Sawyer asks when I sit down.
“Fine.” I give him a tight smile and then look at Maddox.
His head is resting against the wall, and he has his eyes closed. He looks so peaceful and…god he’s stunning. A sun god in the flesh. Uh! This is too weird.
