Chapter 71: Bryn
My eyes move over the three men standing in the room. It’s like seeing three princes waiting to kiss the princess and wake her up. They are all so annoyingly handsome and all have eyes on me. It’s making my head spin a little, but I try my best to keep my expression blank. I don’t want them suspecting what’s going on in my head right now.
“What happened this morning?” Sawyer asks. “Is this because of what that chick said?”
I shrug and fidget with the blanket on my lap. “I started panicking. This isn’t a small thing, Sawyer. It could be a huge scandal.”
He grabs my hand and lifts it to his lips for a soft kiss. “How many times do I have to tell you that I don’t give a shit about what people think? If a team doesn’t want to recruit me because I have a sexy as hell wife who is carrying my kid, then I’m okay with never playing hockey again. You and our kid are the most important thing to me, and I’m getting tired of having to remind you of this.”
That makes me feel a little guilty. He’s been so good at telling me how much he’s willing to give up for us, but it doesn’t help from me feeling like he might regret it if he has to give up hockey. I don’t want to be the reason he ever has regrets.
“I can see you not listening. Don’t make me punish you here in front of these guys.” Sawyer raises a brow at me, daring me to challenge him.
“Okay. Okay!”
“Maybe I should leave you guys alone.” The handsome professor looking guys says.
“I’m sorry!” I say sheepishly. “Thank you for helping me today.”
He gives me a small smile. “It’s no problem. I’m Nolan, by the way, the TA for that class.”
“Oh! Right!” I say but then cringe, making him laugh.
“That’s the reaction I get from most people when I say that. Professor Stix has quite the reputation.” His laugh is smooth a deep and makes the hairs on my neck stand up.
“Yeah, he’s…something.” I say, smiling at him.
His eyes crinkle in the corners when he smiles, which makes it seem so genuine. Not fake or forced, like he’s just pretending to be amused by my quips.
“You guys are going to be in the same class then.” Sawyer says making my attention move back to him.
He has a look in his eye that makes me narrow my eyes on him. What is he up to?
“In a way we will be,” Nolan says with a nod.
His smile falls slowly as he looks at Sawyer and soon all that brightness in his face is gone.
“Well, I hope you’ll look after our girl well then. Unfortunately, we don’t share any classes with her, but knowing she’ll have you there to watch her is going to work out well.” Sawyer says before looking at Maddox. “Don’t you think Maddox?”
Okay, he’s being weird. Did he just out us to this stranger? I mean, we haven’t fully discussed what the three of us will be yet, but he seems to have jumped to the end and decided that we’re some sort of weird three-sided couple. I kind of want to kick him for that.
Maddox clears his throat and looks a little uncomfortable, but nods. “Yep. That’s right.”
I can’t help but smile at how awkward he looks right now, and when he glances my way, I wink at him. We might not have our dynamic sorted out yet, but I like Maddox and maybe…just maybe…I want to keep him.
“Are you all?” Nolan asks pointing a finger between us.
“Together?” Sawyer asks with a wicked look on his face.
It seems like he’s trying to make the poor guy feel uncomfortable, but why? Because he stayed to see if I was okay?
“Sawyer…” I start to warn him, but he keeps going.
“We are with her. She’s ours and we are hers, but not each other. Make sense?” Sawyer asks and I want to face palm so badly.
I don’t know where this is coming from and why he’s suddenly so okay with sharing me and talking about it, but I will figure it out. Because if he thinks this is going to become a regular thing where he invites guys into our relationship, then I need to get a few things straight. First things though, why all of a sudden do I have some sort of harem thing going?
“Uh yeah, I guess.” Nolan stumbles over the words and scratches the back of his neck nervously.
His calm professor like look is being replaced with a flushed face and awkward laugh.
“I’ve just never heard of anything like it before. Three people in a relationship, I mean.” He blurts out.
Sawyer shrugs. “Maybe not, but don’t you think a perfect girl deserves to be worshiped? Our girl desires as much love and care as we can provide. If that means she needs more of us, then so be it.”
“Sawyer!” I hiss, but he just smiles at me.
“Right. Um, well, I should get going. It was nice meeting you- “
“Bryn.” I help him along.
“Bryn, yes. I’ll uh see you in class. Bye.” He leaves the room so fast that the door slams loudly behind him.
My eyes immediately land on Sawyer, and I pull my hand out of his. “What the heck was that all about, Sawyer?” I snap at him.
“What?” He asks as if nothing bizarre just happened.
“Are you trying to pimp me out of something?” I ask, feeling myself get more heated the more I think about how he acted.
“Of course not!” He almost yells.
“Then why were you looking at him like you were planning on roping him into this?” I point between the three of us.
“So what if I am? You don’t like him?”
Is he serious?
“What is going on? Why are you doing this?” I ask him.
Worry is eating at me. I’m not sure what’s going on, but it's making me nervous.
His playful act falls away and I see the worry and anxiety he’s been hiding. “I got a call a couple of weeks ago.”
Oh, no…is he sick?
“A team in California wants to sign me.”
My heart races so fast with excitement, and a huge smile appears on my face. “Sawyer, that’s amazing! Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I wanted to make sure it was a serious offer, so we didn’t get our hopes up.” He says, giving me an apologetic look.
“Oh.” I’m not sure how I feel about him sitting on this news. “So what does that have to do with this?”
“If they accept me, I’ll leave school early and they’ll move me there. That means you would be left alone here.” He says and I catch him glancing at Maddox.
“So…you want Maddox to take care of me? Is that why you’re talking about us being a poly group?” I ask, and I notice Maddox’s jaw tense.
He obviously didn’t know about this either.
“I didn’t plan for this, but when I saw you two together. You guys had mad chemistry, and I got the idea that maybe if there were more people to take care of you, then I wouldn’t be so worried about leaving. I’m not sure if you would want to transfer schools or take another year off until after the baby is born, but I don’t want you to be alone.”
“I’m not a child, Sawyer. I can take care of myself!” My voice rises a little.
“I know that, B! I’m not saying that.”
“So you wanted me to hook up with a friend because we looked like we had chemistry. Did you think maybe I wasn’t ready for what you were planning? What if Maddox isn’t ready to take care of me like that?”
“Bryn- “
“You be quiet.” I snap at Maddox. “Sawyer, I can’t believe you right now. I’m furious at you right now.”
I cross my arms over my chest and look at the door instead of him. It probably looks like I’m pouting, but it’s sort of hard to look scary mad in a hospital gown.
“B- “
“Just go home Sawyer. I don’t want to see or talk to you right now. Maddox can bring me home.” I say, not wanting to hear another word from him.
“B, come on.” He sounds exasperated and maybe I’m being dramatic, but I’m pissed and I don’t want to say something I’ll regret later.
“Just go.” I say without looking at him.
“I can take her back.” Maddox says and Sawyer gives me one more look before sighing.
“Alright. Keep me updated. I love you B.” He says and I want to melt at those three words, but no.
I am not letting him off the hook for this yet.
