Chapter 98: Sawyer

Seeing Bryn collapse like that and the blood…

It is one of the scariest moments of my life. We called an ambulance immediately, but it felt like forever before they arrived. The journalist lady was detained by campus police and given strict orders not to set foot on campus again. Maddox even threatened her with emotional harm, leading to bodily harm if she ever came near us again.

It pays for him to come from a family of lawyers dating back to like four generations or some shit. I’m shocked he didn’t think to do too, but he always said that if hockey doesn’t work out, then he might. The guy is a fucking genius. He was a little scary when he pulled out that legal jargon and the girl saw it too because she left without another word. I can only imagine what sort of shit she’ll be posting, but we will take legal action if necessary.

She is the reason we had to watch Bryn turn deathly pale. As soon as we arrived at the hospital, they rushed her into surgery. They said they needed to get the baby out and then save her life. Maddox and I were left standing in shock in the waiting room while we watching Bryn disappear through a pair of white doors. I lost my shit after that and, being an idiot; I slammed my fist into the wall. A nurse had to patch me up after I made a mess of my hand, but I felt nothing. My mind was so focused on Bryn that nothing else mattered.

Maddox was quietly suffering, and I wanted to beat the shit out of him for seeing so calmly, but one of us had to be.

It didn’t take long for Nolan and Jaxon to show up and the four of us waited and waited in torturous agony for some word on Bryn’s condition.

Two hours passed before someone finally came out to see us.

“Are you the family of- “

“Yes. Is she okay?” I ask cutting the doctor off.

He nods. “She made it through surgery and we were able to stop the bleeding without any other damage.”

“What about the baby?” I asked next, and when he didn’t answer right away, I felt my stomach churn.

He gave me a small smile. “The baby is fine. Perfectly healthy and didn’t suffer any ill effects from the incident. You can see him while your…” He waits for me to tell him what Bryn is to me.

“My wife and their partner.” I add.

The doctor raises his brows at that but is smart enough not to comment on it.

“You can see your son while your wife recovers from her surgery.” He says and steps back, but I stop him.

“Son? No, we are having a little girl.” I say confidently.

The doctor chuckled. “You Ould be surprised how many times this has happened. Ultrasounds were created to check for health conditions, so the ability to check gender isn’t always accurate. I can assure you, you have a son. I’ll have a nurse come out to escort you to the nursery.”

He leaves us alone and stunned. For all of five seconds before we start laughing and hugging.

“Holy shit! We have a son.” I say proudly.

“Bryn is going to be pissed. She spent a small fortune on that closet of clothes.” Jaxon says, shaking his head.

“Who the fuck cares? We can return it all, anyway. That’s one good thing about her need to keep every receipt. We can return almost everything.” I run a hand down my face, but I can’t stop smiling. “I have to call our families.”

I leave the guys to call everyone back home. Thankfully, I figured out a way for all of us to video chat at once.

“Hey guys.” I say once everyone is on video.

“Hey Bro! What’s going on?” My brother asks.

He’s closest to the camera while Poppy has a fussing, Molly bouncing on her hip.

“I have to tell you guys something, but let me finish before you react.” I warn them.

They all immediately open their mouths to object, but I stop them with a hand. “Wait.”

“First, Bryn had a complication with the pregnancy and had to be rushed to the hospital.” There are gasps from all the ladies, but they don’t interrupt me. “She was taken into surgery and they were able to fix her all up. They also took the baby out as well, and they said he is healthy and we can visit him soon. That’s why I wanted to call so you guys can see him as well.”

There is a beat of silence before they all start talking at once.

“Guys one at a time!”

“So my baby is okay?” Bryn’s mom asks with a sniffle.

“She is, but she’s still asleep from the surgery, so we can’t see her yet.”

“Did you say…he?” Poppy asks and I smirk.

Of course she’s the one who would catch that. “Yep. We have a son.”

She shakes her head and laughs. “My sister is going to freak. When we get there, I’m going to need to help her return everything.”

“She could use the help after all this. So that would be awesome.”

“Good. We’ll grab the next flight out.”

“So will we,” Bryn’s mom says and she and my brother start talking logistics.

A nurse comes out of the doors. Bryn had disappeared behind and she motions us to follow her.

“Okay, they’re letting us in to see the baby. Hang on.” I lower my phone and follow the guys in.

“Not that I don’t mind see a lot of hot guy ass but Sawyer, can you like shut your camera off or something?” I hear Poppy say.

The guys snort and I lift my phone to look at my sister-in-law. My brother is scowling at her while she smiles innocently.

“Sorry Bro.” He grumbles something about punishing her later and I have to fight not to gag like a dumb kid.

The nurse leads us through a maze of hallways until we reach the labor and delivery ward. We go through another set of double doors and a few feet in there is a wall full of windows. When we reach it, there are a bunch of clear crib things on top of these carts. It’s a weird design and I don’t think I like how all these babies are lined up. It looks like a fucking store to pick babies from.

“Does the baby have to stay here?” I ask the nurse when we stop in front of the window.

She shakes her head. “No. We only bring the babies here if the family or mom needs rest.”

“What stops someone from walking in and taking a baby? It looks like a shopping mall for kidnappers or smugglers or something.” Maddox points out what I had just been thinking.

“We would notice someone walking into the nursery and taking a baby.” She says with a laugh.

I glance at the guys and especially Jaxon. He shakes his head like he knows exactly what I’m thinking. We need to lock down some security for our kid. Not that we are high time celebrities, but because a reporter showed up at your school and stressed Bryn out enough to push her into early labor…I don’t want to take any chances.

“I’d like to speak to your security team.” Jaxon says to the nurse.

She lets out a weak laugh. “That isn’t needed. I assure you all the babies are completely safe.”

“Given the statistics of kidnapping in infants and children, especially newborn, I would feel much better knowing our son has proper protection.” He says.

“Sir, like I said- “

“Is he right?” A woman says from behind Maddox.

The mountain steps aside to reveal a wide eyed terrified mother. “Are our babies not safe here? Why don’t you have a security guard nearby?”

“Ma’am, I can assure you.” The nurse stumbles to get the situation under control.

The woman shakes her head. “I would like to request a guard. If my baby is in there, I want to be sure she has protection.”

The nurse sighs and nods her head, then walks off toward a huge desk area. She speaks to one of the other nurses who picks up a phone on the desk. While we wait, I search the beds with little name tags on them until I find…Beckett. My eyes lift and emotion gets locked in my throat like a know when I see my son for the first time.

“Shit. He looks just like Bryn.” I say under my breath.

“Show us!” I hear from my phone and quickly lift it so that our family can see. “Oh, my gosh! He’s beautiful!” They say almost in unison. “We can’t wait to see him.”

“Shit, this is crazy. He was just inside Bryn’s stomach, and now there he is. It’s unreal.” Jaxon says.

“Yeah.” Maddox adds.

Nolan is in silent shock, but I catch him wipe a tear away. This small person has made a bunch of grown ass men cry like babies.
