CHAPTER 116: FALLING INTO PLACE
I was anxiously waiting for the abductors to call back. It had been hours after hours that had passed, but not a single call was made from the last time they did. My entire body was sweating bullets and I couldn’t think well. It was like I was trapped into a spiral of endless battle for sanity, that anytime could be the end of me. I am merely holding on, but the longer I wait, the more fear begets me.
The moment when I was about to give up my hopes of ever receiving updates from the abductors was the same minute the phone suddenly rings. Everyone around me hurriedly took their places. Lewis ran swiftly towards where the phone was located, immediately took it and handed it to me in milliseconds before sitting right at a cushion in front of me. I took several heavy breaths before finally answering the call with a shaky hand.
“Hello.”
“Alright, Miss Hunt, now let’s talk business.”
“I’m listening. What do you want?”
“A hundred million dollars. That’s the price I demand if you want to see your precious daughter again.” Everyone’s eyes unbelievably popped open and gasps of shock were heard amongst the people with me in the living room. “I know it’s a lot, but there’s no amount of money that could replace your daughter’s life, am I right, Miss Hunt?”
I wouldn't deny the fact that I was stunned and was taken aback at the enormous amount these criminals were asking of me. But just like what he said, there’s definitely no amount of money in this world that would be greater for me than Michelle’s safety.
“Alright! A thousand million dollars it is. Where must I deposit it?”
“No deposits. Bring it to me personally, Miss Hunt. You bring it to me alone. I will give you the address where you will hand me the money, and once I get hold of it, then you can have your daughter back.”
I saw Lewis shaking his head in disapproval. But regardless if my mind tells me that it’s not a good idea for me to go alone, all that matters to me now is Michelle.
“I wish to speak to my daughter! I need to know she is alive and unhurt.”
The man on the other line roared haughtily in laughter, which echoed and broke the silence of our atmosphere, making my body shiver with chills and tremendous fright.
“I will do the demanding here, Miss Hunt. You knew very well that you are in no position to do such. But, just to build trust and to somewhat ease your worries a bit, I will send you a video clip of her.” Right after he said the last word, my personal phone beeps. My hand scrambled to pick it up and open the message I received. My eyes instantly waters and agonizing tears quickly stream down while I watch closely my daughter, who is seated on top of a bed. Her eyes were blindfolded and her mouth was restrained from speaking with a piece of cloth wrapped around it. Aside from those restrictions, she looked alright and there were no signs of any cruelty done to her that somewhat gave me relief. “Have you watched the video clip, Miss Hunt?”
“Yes.”
“As you can see, your daughter wasn't a bit unharmed. She had been treated here with care. But, everything could turn ugly for her if you provoke me.”
“No, please! Don’t hurt her! I will do anything you ask me to! Anything! Just don’t hurt my daughter!”
“I may be a criminal, Miss Hunt, but I am a man of my word. Hand me the money and I will hand you your daughter.”
“Yes! I will give you the money! Give me the address and I will personally hand it to you.” The words automatically came out from my lips without any hesitations.
“I will send you the details of where and when. Don’t do anything stupid, Miss Hunt. Your daughter’s life is in your hands.”
And just like that, the line went dead. I could feel my entire body shaking in uncontrollable coldness. I was numb all over that made me collapse on my seat in indescribable fatigue and unexplainable fright. Lewis promptly sat beside me and cuddled my limping body, but I couldn’t feel him at all.
***
“Why did you say those words, Ivar?”
“What words?”
“Those words that you told to Penelope. Michael and I don’t have any intentions of giving Michelle back to her. He wants to keep his daughter. We just need the money to start a new life, the three of us.”
“I just said that, Pamela, to ease her grieving state and we could get our ransom money. If you guys don’t wish to comply with what I told her, then so be it. All I ever wanted was the money we agreed upon, fifty-fifty, your payment for the service my team rendered to you.”
“Don’t worry, Ivar. The moment we have the money, half of it will be yours as agreed upon. You can count on that.”
“What about my share?” Marcus immediately voiced out. My eyes swiftly bore at him, who was seated at the seat Michael vacated.
“You will get what we’ve talked about, Marcus, don’t worry.” I told him with assurance before smiling reassuringly.
“Same goes with me, Marcus. You know how I work, I value my people well enough and give what’s rightfully theirs.” Ivar declared as well that made Marcus smile broadly in satisfaction.
“So when do you plan to execute the handing of the money? The sooner we have it in our hands, the better.”
“Patience, Pamela, patience. Let’s give it a few more days just to add pressure on Penelope’s shoulder. For the meantime, I have an extra room for you and Michael while you’re here in New York. Feel free to stay if you wish.”
My lips formed a highly satisfied grin. Everything is falling into place. Not only did I make Penelope suffer extremely and avenge everything she did to me, but I will be five hundred million dollars richer at the end of it all. Now I can fulfill my life’s ultimate dream, and that is to be with the man I love and to be filthy rich.
