The Unexpected

Isabelle.

Kaden's brows rose in surprise, he glanced at the door then at me. His dark eyes started getting normal. The unexpected interruption had caught both of us off guard. But Layla's panicked voice was what seemed to surprise him even more.

He leaned forward turning on the lamp and got off my body, I fixed my dress and sat up before I followed him as he walked towards the door.

There was a strange suspension existing in the room till he opened the door and Layla's tear-stained face came into our view.

"Layla, what happened?" Kaden's eyes went wide watching her state, her hair was messy and there were huge marks covering her cheeks and her neck.

A gasp slipped past my lips, who did that to her? The worry instantly consumed me.

Without any warning she threw herself on Kaden, her arms tightly wrapped around his body and she buried her face into the crook of his neck.

Kaden looked shocked by her move but he didn't wrap his hands around her nor did he pull her close. On the other hand, Layla seemed as though she wanted to bury herself in his body. Her hands were holding onto him for her dear life.

Her hugging Kaden really didn't bother me but what bothered me was the worry about the unexpected condition I was seeing her in, What could really happen to her?

"Layla, what happened? Can you please tell me?" Kaden seemed hesitant about what to do, I could see his arms uncomfortably trying to get her to move away and look at him.

"That man....he t-tried to..." She didn't complete instead she broke into sobs. She had not even once lifted her face, it seemed like she was scared.

"Who tried what?" Kaden asked, and this time after much hesitancy he gently pushed Layla away from his body, his hands holding onto her arms to keep her still.

She was sobbing, the tears continuously ran down her cheeks.

"I-I d-don't know who it was, it was dark and..."She stammered, "Someone came and attacked me." She pointed at her neck, there were marks that seemed as though it was made by nails.

"I anyhow managed to run out of the door, I am scared, Kaden...." She hugged him again, this time more tighter than before, "He might come again....I-I d-don't know what to do. "

"Layla, nothing would happen. Can you please calm down?" He tried to get off of her hold but she didn't budge.

"No, it was so scary...he might come again," She continuously shook her head, "Can I sleep with you tonight, please? I can even manage on the couch..."

I didn't know why the strange feeling formed in my gut when she talked about sleeping with him, would Kaden agree to this?

Kaden glanced at me upon his question, I nervously bit my bottom lip...I felt bad for Layla but I didn't feel good at the thought of Kaden and Layla sleeping on the same bed.

"Layla...I..." Kaden tried to speak but Layla interrupted.

"I know you and Isabelle sleep together but can you request her to manage for today? I really don't feel safe and I think you can save me if that man comes again?" She lifted her head to look at him, her eyes were glistening with tears.

"Do you feel safe in this room?" Kaden's question that he gently asked her made my guts twist in the obnoxious feeling, I could feel the cold run in my veins.

Layla's eyes flickered at his question, the flicker didn't look relatable with her current situation, she glanced at me and I didn't know it was my hallucination or not but there was a small twitch at the corner of her lips that barely made it noticeable for anyone to notice.

"Yes," She responded and tried to hug him again but Kaden pulled away time, a small comforting smile getting visible on his lips.

"You can sleep in this room for tonight, I and Isabelle will sleep in another room," I didn't know why my shoulders relaxed at his announcement.

He turned his head to look at me, "Are you okay with it, Angel?" He asked and I nodded without any delay.

There was a strange look that made itself visible on Layla's face but I couldn't really identify it as anger for now since I thought she was genuinely scared.

"You can stay in my room, tonight. I'll check on the security," Kaden spoke, Layla hesitated for a while, her hands balled into fists but he didn't notice noticed.

She finally nodded after a while, moving her hand to wipe her tears.

Kaden flashed her a small smile and she tried taking a few steps towards the bed but she ended up stumbling and falling into Kaden's arms. This time my eyes caught something strange, there was dried blood on the edge of her nails and for the first time, I noticed how long her nails were--They were painted red but the blood on them was evident.

"Sorry, I just...lost my balance," She spoke that diverted my attention.

"It's okay, let me help you......" Kaden let her grab his hand for balance and lead her to the bed, she sat on the bed and he pulled the duvet over her body.

"You are safe here, don't worry, "He smiled at her and she nodded.

"Thank you, Kaden," A small appreciative smile made its way on her lips.

"You don't need to thank me, we are friends after all," Kaden spoke and this made her smile shrink a bit but not enough to get attention. She nodded again before Kaden turned around and walked towards me.

"Shall we go sweetheart?" He asked and I responded by taking the hand he had held out to me, and he slowly led me out of the room.

I didn't know why my eyes glanced back at Layla, but as they did I could see the unreliable expression on her face as she looked at me. A look of envy and probably fury.....

******

I looked as Kaden made all the guards in a row, all of them stood with their heads bowed. I could see the fear in their small movements such as the light shaking of their hand.

"When I have especially told you all to keep an eye on everything then how can anyone barge into the guest room and attack Layla?!" His shout made everyone flinch.

I worriedly looked at Cassandra and she comfortably squeezed my hand. Kaden had called the guards early in the morning, and the interrogation had been going on since then. Apparently, none bothered to call Layla who was still in the room.

"Your Majesty, last night we all were alert. We didn't spot any intruder coming inside the mansion, we kept the security strict as you've told us to," A guard who seemed to be the head of them decided to speak, his head was still bowed as he talked.

"If you all have done what I'd said, then how did the man succeed in attacking her? Are you fucking telling me the intruder mircally appeared in her room?!" I had never seen Kaden this angry, he looked dangerous, "If you all can't take care of the safety of a guest and the how the hell do I believe that having you all around the mansion will ensure my mate's safety?" His fists were clenched to his sides.

Watching the anger burning in his eyes I looked to my side at Jason and lightly tugged at his sleeve, his attention was instantly shifted at me.

"They are scared, can you please tell Kaden to talk nicely with them?" His eyes rose in surprise upon my request but he quickly composed himself.

"If he says anything right now, he'll beat up him too," Carter spoke before Jason could respond. Jason's cheek went red in embarrassment but he didn't say anything else proving that what Carter said was right.

My hopes vanished in thin air, I glanced back at the guards who were trembling in fear. My eyes softened--It might be their mistake but Kaden was going very harsh on them.

"Cassandra, can you request Kaden?" I looked at Cassandra.

"He won't listen to me, Layla might've got hurt yesterday but he's more furious since the lack of safety could put you to risk. He doesn't want any harm to you." She spoke.

"Answer me!" Kaden's shout made me flinch again.

Upon noticing my state Jason lightly wrapped his hand around my shoulder, "It's okay, he'll calm down in a few minutes. Don't worry."

"Your Majesty, we are telling you the truth," The guard spoke, his voice cracking, "We did keep an eye on everything and there was no one who had come to even around the mansion."

"If you dare to lie again, I'll not think twice before cutting your head off of your body!" Kaden threatened the unpleasant feeling spread inside of my gut.

"We are not lying, Your Majesty. Please trust us," The guard shook with fear.

I saw Kaden tightly closing his eyes as if he was trying to control himself, his fists balling up even more.

As if I had sensed that something unpleasant was going to happen or he was going to do something I would not want to see, my body progressed before I even knew it. I walked towards him, I didn't know why I didn't feel any sort of fear even though he looked deadly. With his dark eyes and the blue veins almost popping from the sides of his forehead, as if there was a beast beneath his skin ready to tear through and destroy everything around him.

But I reached out and my hand lightly wrapped around his one, his eyes seemed to instantly open as though he felt the same spark I felt when my skin came in contact with his.

He looked at me in surprise, his eyes were still dark and I slowly lifted my other hand to place it on his cheek. My thumb brushed on his skin, and his pitch-black eyes slowly turned into their regular brown color. His shoulders slowly relaxed.

"Isabelle..." I spoke before he could even start what he was going to say.

"Forgive them for this time, I don't think they are lying," I spoke.

"But, sweetheart they..."

"No, they are not lying Kaden." I cut him off, "Trust me, they are not."

Kaden remained mum for a while, looking at me before he finally released a sigh licking his lips dry.

"You all go now but next time keep your eyes and ears open so that events like this don't occur again," Kaden dismissed them and the look of relief passed each of their eyes. They bowed at Kaden, and a few of them offered appreciative smiles which I returned before they were out of the place.

"Did you get scared?" Kaden asked, softly. His hand now held onto mine that was resting on his cheek.

"A little bit," I showed him a pinch to indicate the amount and a small chuckle slipped past his lips.

"Come here," He opened his arms and engulfed me in a hug.

"I'm sorry that I scared you," He kissed the side of my head.

"You don't need to be sorry, It's okay," I smiled, I was happy that Kaden got normal again.

"By the way, Kaden...don't you think it's a bit fishy out of all the rooms the intruder decided to barge into the guestroom that probably had no chance of having anyone staying there?" Jason's voice caught our attention and we slowly pulled away.

I saw Kaden's tongue getting firmly tucked in the corner of his mouth," I don't really get it, who could have a problem with Layla plus she only came here for a few days." He spoke.

"And Layla is not naive enough to not know how to protect herself, how could she get all those scratches and marks anyways if she knows how to exactly defend herself?" Cassandra spoke.

"Who knows if that witch did it to herself for attention," Carter shrugged.

Even though Carter did not look like he was serious while saying that but judging by the change in others' expressions I could see that his statement had been taken seriously and it made sense.

"I had seen dried blood stains on her nails," This left my mouth before I even knew it.

"You saw what?" Cassandra's brows rose in surprise and I could see Kaden looked surprised too.

"Dried bloodstains, "I spoke, this time a little hesitant.

"Damn I am sure that witch planned it all," Carter spoke snapping his finger.

The silence fell between everyone, Kaden's jaw had tightened as though he was thinking about something.

"We'll talk about this later, let's get inside and have our breakfast," He lightly grabbed my hand and led me inside whilst others followed us too.

I didn't know if Layla pretend or not but she didn't look safe to me at all. I could only hope that everything would stay fine just as it is.
