Chapter 15 Parents-in-law Visit
"What? Are you going?" Yolanda asked in surprise.
"If there's a suitable opportunity, of course, I'll go. What else can I do?"
I also thought about starting from the grassroots level in my family's company, but it's not where my interest lies. My parents are still in good health. They don't need my help for now. I want to revisit my own dreams.
Yolanda slapped her thigh and said, "I've been meaning to say this. You were the cello goddess of New York University back then. It's such a waste for you to be a full-time housewife. Don't worry, if there are any elegant music concerts or such, I'll definitely recommend you!"
I saluted, "Alright, thank you. I'll treat everyone tonight, don't be polite!"
After finishing the drinks, I parted ways with Jane and the others and went back home.
I called Tim and asked him to come over and drive. Just as I hung up the phone, I heard a familiar voice. "Mrs. Harrison?"
I turned my head, and it was Jason.
"Jason, what are you doing here?" I asked.
"Working part-time nearby. Just finished work. Mrs. Harrison, have you been drinking?" Jason must have smelled the alcohol on me.
I covered my forehead, feeling a bit uncomfortable, and nodded. The alcohol was getting to me. It felt like my brain was in a haze. "Jason, can you drive?"
He replied, "Yes, if you're unable to drive, I can drive."
What a good kid!
I threw the car keys to Jason and made a phone call to ask Tim not to come.
"Mrs. Harrison, is this... your car?" When Jason saw that black Pamela, a hint of surprise and envy flashed in his eyes.
No matter the age, men always have a desire for cars.
Dizzy, I answered, "Yes, it's my car. Just use the navigation to take me to Maple Villa."
"Maple Villa?" Jason was stunned again. That place is outrageously expensive, and he must have heard about it too.
"What are you staring at? I feel so dizzy." Seeing that Jason seemed astonished, I leaned closer to him and rested my weak body against his shoulder. This seemingly unintentional act after being drunk easily creates ambiguity.
Jason snapped out of it, realizing that we were too close for comfort. He quickly supported me, his face turning red. "Mrs. Harrison, be careful not to fall."
It seems Jason is similar to Lauren in character, someone who doesn't easily bow down to money. Despite knowing that he has encountered a wealthy woman, he can still remain clear-headed.
I pretended to be tipsy and laughed. "Jason is really considerate. Your girlfriend must be very lucky, unlike me... My marriage failed, and all I have now is money. Look, this car is the most ordinary one in my family. If you like it, I'll give it to you!"
If Charlie can give cars and houses to other women, so can I. I feel perfectly balanced mentally.
"No, Mrs. Harrison, you've had too much to drink. I'll take you back." Jason shook his head quickly and helped me into the car.
Jason drove cautiously and slowly, probably afraid of accidentally scratching the car and not being able to afford it.
I dozed off in the passenger seat, occasionally opening my eyes to see where we were.
After a while, Jason spoke, "Mrs. Harrison, we've arrived at Maple Villa. Which building is yours?"
"Building A08," I replied with my eyes closed.
Jason entered the specific building number in the navigation and finally brought me to my doorstep.
After parking the car, I took out a stack of money from my wallet and handed it to Jason. "Take it, it's for your driving service."
Jason was bewildered, but then quickly returned the money to me. "Mrs. Harrison, there's no need to give me money. I just helped you out, it wasn't a transaction."
"Just take it. It's late, and it would be troublesome for you to take a taxi. Use this car to go back, and we'll contact each other tomorrow. I'll send a driver to pick up the car from your place." I unbuckled my seat belt, got out of the car without waiting for Jason's response, and went inside.
As soon as I got home, I woke up Elizabeth and asked her to make me some detoxifying honey water.
Elizabeth had no complaints and went straight to the kitchen to get busy.
In another two or three days, Charlie would be attending a business conference, getting closer and closer to finding his true love in life, while I would finally have my freedom.
After a while, the sound of a vehicle engine turning off came from outside, and Charlie quickly appeared in sight.
He glanced at me lying on the living room couch and then sat down on the other side. He also reeked of strong alcohol, not looking any better than I was.
"Madam, the water is ready." Elizabeth brought a cup of detoxifying honey water and placed it in front of me. She respectfully greeted Charlie, "Mr. Bennett, you're back."
Charlie glanced at her with a cold and indifferent expression, not responding at all.
I sat up and greeted Charlie with a bright smile, "Have you been drinking too? Here, you should have this cup of detoxifying honey water first. Elizabeth, pour another cup for me."
Elizabeth nodded and went to the kitchen.
"No need." Charlie didn't even touch the cup.
I felt a bit smug. After all, this detoxifying honey water had been personally brewed by his future mother-in-law. In the future, he would have to please them if he wanted to pursue Lauren.
Today, he ignored the nanny, and in the future, he wouldn't measure up to his mother-in-law.
Elizabeth brought another cup of detoxifying honey water, and I softly said to Charlie, "Elizabeth was woken up by me to make this detoxifying honey water. It would be really unfair to her hard work if you don't take a sip."
Elizabeth quickly responded, "Mr. Bennett, madam, it's my duty. It's not hard at all."
"He lacks manners and has a terrible temper. Don't mind him," I whispered to Elizabeth, subtly belittling Charlie in front of her.
He'll be madly in love with Lauren. I'm just adding some difficulty to his pursuit in the future.
"No, madam, you're exaggerating!" Elizabeth became a bit flustered.
"Alright, Elizabeth, go rest now." I waved my hand at her.
After Elizabeth left, I drank half a cup of detoxifying honey water and went upstairs to take a shower. Charlie, as usual, went to the guest room to rest.
Just as I finished showering and came out, I found Charlie sitting on the master bedroom bed, still wearing his pajamas.
I frowned, "Why are you in my room?"
Charlie wore the same impatient expression. "My parents are here, and they'll be staying in the guest room tonight."
I was shocked and puzzled. In my previous life, my in-laws were so eager for Charlie and me to have a child, yet they never came to Maple Villa to supervise. Why did they suddenly appear today?
"So sudden?" I was caught off guard.
"Sudden?" Charlie sneered, "What did you tell Dylan? You don't even know it yourself?"
So that's why Charlie came back tonight, to deal with the late-night inspection.
I swear I never thought Dylan would go and complain, let alone bring my in-laws along. This damned butterfly effect.
"I didn't say much to him. I just asked him to persuade you to get a divorce." I didn't want to be wrongly accused. "I didn't know he would go talk to your parents," I said impatiently, sounding annoyed.
Then I opened the drawer and took out the divorce agreement I had prepared earlier. I had already signed it, and it stated that I didn't want any of Charlie's properties, just the divorce.
I handed the divorce agreement to Charlie and started applying a face mask. "If you sign it, you'll know whether I'm just playing hard to get," I remarked.
The atmosphere suddenly became tense as I caught a glimpse of Charlie's worsening expression in the vanity mirror.
Just as he was about to tear up the divorce agreement, someone knocked on the bedroom door.
