Chapter 70 Narrow Road to Enemies
"Mom, this kind of medical report can be forged. Don't believe her," I quickly collected the piece of paper.
My mother nodded numbly and then tried to leave, but the next moment, she fainted.
"Mom!"
After I rushed my mother to the hospital, she was quickly taken into the emergency room. After some examinations, the doctor told me that my mother had an arrhythmia. Madeline had undoubtedly heavily stimulated her during the incident at the restaurant.
Fortunately, my mother's condition was not too severe. She would stay in the hospital for a few days and receive proper treatment during her stay.
In the single-patient ward, I felt terrible as I watched my mother sleeping on the bed. In my previous life, she had gone through all of this without telling me, enduring so much pain on her own.
I wasn't a good daughter, fortunately, God has gifted me this opportunity to make amends.
Unknowingly, I fell asleep too but was awakened by sounds coming from the next room. A man was shouting, "I don't need to be hospitalized. What surgery? You're all blind!"
"Bothering, wasting money!"
The voice sounded familiar, but I was too lazy to get up and see, so I just rolled over and continued sleeping.
"Mom, I'll go buy breakfast for you." I told her the next morning, after I finished washing up, and prepared to go buy some food.
As I passed by the adjacent single room, I saw a few familiar faces.
Lauren and Elizabeth were gathered by the bedside, and Isaac was lying in bed, chatting with his family.
"Madam!" Elizabeth greeted keenly as she spotted me and walked out happily. "What are you doing here? Are you not feeling well?"
"Elizabeth, you no longer work at my house, you don't have to call me Madam anymore, just call me Rosalie." I smiled faintly, but my gaze was on Lauren.
Lauren also put on a smile and came out. "Mrs. Harrison, I didn't expect to meet you here. My mom said she used to work as a maid at your house, and I was quite surprised!"
My smile became even gentler. "Yes, we have such a fate. What happened to your dad?"
Isaac seemed to have recognized me too—I was the unlucky person who got knocked out by his brother with a stick. So, he obviously felt a bit embarrassed and quickly averted his gaze.
"Heart disease, needs surgery." Lauren also glanced back at her father.
"So serious?" I was somewhat surprised. "Is there anything I can help with?"
Elizabeth said, "Rosalie, you are too kind-hearted. Thank you for your offer. Lauren found a friend to help, so we don't currently have any issues."
I smiled coldly in my heart. It seems Charlie rushed back in the middle of the night a couple of days ago because of this incident, perhaps?
Lauren looked at me, still wearing a soft smile on her face, but her eyes were no longer as innocent as before.
Little did she know, she considered me her love rival, but I couldn't care less because my plan all along was to wait for Charlie to divorce me.
"Alright, Elizabeth, I'll go buy breakfast for my mom first. Her heart isn't doing too well, so she's been hospitalized." After politely greeting them, I waved at Elizabeth and turned to leave.
When I arrived at the elevator, I stood expressionlessly, waiting for the doors to open, but to my surprise, Dylan appeared before me.
He was wearing a white coat, holding a medical record book, and had stylish golden-framed glasses, exuding his usual coldness.
Upon seeing me, he frowned. "What are you doing here?"
"My mom is sick." I was also surprised. "Why did you come back?"
"I ended the exchange program early." Dylan stepped out of the elevator and stood in front of me. "What's wrong with your mom?"
I told him about my mom's heart discomfort, and he nodded. "Hmm, people with heart conditions need to rest and pay attention to their emotions."
"I know. Well, Dylan, you're busy, so I won’t keep you any longer." I subconsciously glanced at Isaac'sroom.
When did Dylan fall in love with Lauren anyway? He had already interacted with her a few times, so logically speaking, he should have developed feelings for her.
Have you started to feel something? This time, with Isaac's hospitalization and operation falling within his responsibilities, Dylan and him will definitely have frequent interactions, which will surely lead to sparks of love. But I also feel a little guilty.
Dylan and I have no grievances against each other, so why do I always think of pushing him into the pit of love? In reality, I just want to cause trouble for Charlie. After buying breakfast and returning, I passed by Isaac'sroom. Unexpectedly, Dylan was still there, talking to a few people. When he noticed me at the door, he glanced in my direction. I quickly walked off.
As soon as my mom finished breakfast, my dad arrived. Knowing that my mom fainted and was hospitalized due to anger, he felt extremely guilty. As soon as he entered theroom, he slapped himself twice and swore that he had never had any relationship with Madeline, that everything was a setup. I quietly left the room. The problem between my parents should be dealt with in private.
After reaching the staircase, I sent a message to Charlie: "My mom is in the hospital." He replied quickly this time: "Give me the address." I sighed. Charlie is really busy, arranging surgeries for his lover's father, providing financial support, and visiting his mother-in-law at the hospital all at once. And to make matters worse, their hospital rooms are adjacent to each other.
"What are you doing here?" Dylan's voice sounded from behind me. I turned around and he was standing at the doorway of the staircase. "Nothing, just taking a breath of fresh air," I replied. "Do you know that Isaac's surgery costs around four hundred thousand dollars?" he asked. How would I know? He’s not my dad. I coldly said, "I don't know, why should I care?"
Surprisingly, Dylan still had the mood to laugh. He walked down a few steps and leaned against the railing, facing me. "As husband and wife, half of the shared property is yours," he said. Meaning that Charlie's the one paying. Charlie is willing to give everything for her, and Dylan will deeply understand this madness in the future.
I retorted, "So your suggestion is for me to ask for it back from Lauren?" "That's one way," Dylan nodded. "You jerk!" I cursed at him and then sat down on the steps, muttering to myself, "Didn't they just finish demolishing the Second Chemical Plant? Why does Charlie need to pay?" Isaac could have used the compensation from the demolition for more surgeries.
Dylan told me, "They used the compensation to buy a new house. It's all gone now." So, this guy wasn't discussing the patient's condition earlier; he was gathering information instead. I genuinely felt touched and smiled at him, saying, "Thank you for clearing that up."
I'm more worried about Madeline now than Charlie and Lauren's situation. I asked Dylan to contact a nurse for my mom and told him I will find a way to deal with that sly fox. Dylan didn't refuse, but he asked me to bring his cat to him when I have time. After leaving the hospital, I set off to find my strategist Jane. She surely has more ideas than me. I told her about what happened with my dad.
After the incident, Jane's expression turned serious. "That vixen is trying to enter your life and become your stepmother," she said.
"I thought she wanted money, but she unexpectedly handed over a pregnancy test result," I sighed. "Now we have to figure out a way to make her hand over the film and confirm if she's really pregnant."
