Chapter 68 Trouble at Home
Upon seeing Jason's reply, I didn't respond immediately, but instead opened the front camera to carefully examine myself.
Hmm, I'm indeed quite pretty, whether it's my natural appearance or the influence of my upbringing.
I have only felt inferior in front of Charlie because he doesn't love me, making me think I'm not good enough.
A few minutes later, I replied, "I am a fairy. Thank you for the compliments."
Jason sent a laughing emoji, which made me unable to hold back my laughter. After chatting with him for a while, I finally drifted off to sleep.
"Rosalie, Rosalie?" In the morning, I heard my mother-in-law knocking on the door from outside.
"Mom, what's wrong?" I answered groggily.
"Is Charlie in the room? His car is gone, and he's not answering his phone!" my mother-in-law asked loudly.
I checked my phone and saw that it was almost nine in the morning.
Charlie should have returned to New York a long time ago, but he didn't inform his parents. I yawned, got out of bed, put on my coat, and opened the door. My mother-in-law was standing at the door.
"Mom, there's an urgent matter at the Second Chemical Plant, and he rushed back there late last night," I made up an excuse for Charlie.
"Ah, I see. No wonder he didn't answer the phone," my mother-in-law said, still a bit suspicious, but nodded nonetheless. "Alright, get up and have some breakfast. Don't skip it."
"Okay, I'll change my clothes and come down right away," I replied.
Then my mother-in-law went downstairs, and I closed the door and returned to the room. I sent Charlie a message, informing him about the conversation I just had with my mother-in-law.
Afterwards, I changed my clothes and went downstairs to have breakfast.
Charlie's other relatives had already gone home last night, leaving only me, my mother-in-law, and a few other servants in the house. We chatted casually, sipped on hot soup, and enjoyed the freshly made seafood salad - it was very pleasant.
At this time, Charlie replied to my message: "Okay, got it."
He didn't even say thank you. He has no manners. I didn't feel like replying to him anymore.
"Rosalie, if Charlie mistreats you in any way or dares to fool around, you must tell me. Don't worry, I'll help you," my mother-in-law said with emphasis after we finished breakfast.
In my previous life, although she opposed Charlie being with Lauren, she never said anything like this to me. At most, it was a subtle reminder to Charlie based on the interests of both families.
But it's all my fault for being foolish.
From the beginning, Charlie and I were together because our families orchestrated it. In a way, my in-laws have always been satisfied with me as their daughter-in-law, only caring about the benefits for both families.
To make them like me more and gain their favor, I need to be smarter and please them. It would greatly ease the strained relationship between Charlie and me in the past.
In my previous life, I didn't understand this. I thought that if I could win over Charlie, I could win over everyone in the Bennett family. I failed to build a good enough relationship with my in-laws, so they opposed us after discovering Lauren, and couldn't support us for long.
"Mom, Charlie has been much better lately. Don't worry." I obediently replied, "I feel guilty for making you and Dad worry so much."
"Nonsense, it's not you who worried us, it's that bastard Charlie!" My mother-in-law quickly corrected me, "Rosalie, the reason your father and I wanted to matchmake you two was because you were different from other girls."
I was a little bewildered.
My mother-in-law sighed and continued, "Charlie has always been popular with girls since childhood. As he grew up, he became even more troublesome for us. Many women liked him, and among them, there were those who came from well-to-do families. But only you followed him unwaveringly for five years. Your father and I saw it clearly, marrying you is Charlie's good fortune."
I still stared blankly at my mother-in-law, unsure of how to respond.
Smiling, my mother-in-law patted my hand, "Rosalie, your father and I wanted you to be our daughter-in-law because we genuinely like you, not just for any benefits. Do you understand?"
"Mom..." I unexpectedly choked up and couldn't express what I felt in that moment. I simply nodded, "I understand."
If I had known this in my previous life, things wouldn't have ended up with the entire Bennett family as enemies.
I had faithfully followed Charlie for so many years, yet I couldn't open his heart. Fortunately, my in-laws saw everything and approved of me.
With my mother-in-law's sincere liking, my time alone with her was very comfortable and harmonious. I just wondered, when will Charlie come to pick me up like he said?
It's already been three days!
Dylan greets me every day, asking if I have gone back yet, worried that the servants at my home aren't taking good care of Bubu.
Feeling annoyed, I replied, "What do you take the servants at my home for? Worried that they will mistreat the cat?"
Dylan: Oh no, just thought that you would take care of it more attentively.
This guy is outrageous. After sending him a "goodbye" expression, I threw my phone aside.
Just as I was lying like a dead body on the sofa, my mom called. I answered as usual and greeted her cheerfully, "Mom, miss me?"
There were a few seconds of silence on the other end, then my mom's voice, trying to hold back sobs, came through, "Rose, could you come back for a visit?"
I felt a pang of uneasiness and asked, "What's wrong? Mom, are you crying? What happened to Dad?"
"Just come back first. Your father and I will be waiting at home." My mom didn't answer all my questions and hung up the phone.
I didn't have time to call back.
I went to inquire, and immediately found my mother-in-law to ask her to arrange a driver to take me back to New York. When my mother-in-law asked me what happened, why I was in such a hurry, I didn't answer her in detail. I just said there was an urgent matter at home and I needed to return immediately.
My mother-in-law didn't say much and promptly arranged for a car to take me back to New York. Before leaving, she instructed me, "Rosalie, call me anytime if there's anything." "Okay, Mom, I'll go now," I replied, sitting in the car, nodding with a heavy heart. After several hours of driving, I arrived home.
My parents were sitting in the living room, and the atmosphere was extremely heavy and gloomy. Occasional sobbing could be heard. On the coffee table in the living room, there was a pile of photos randomly scattered.
I walked over and took a look, instantly changing my expression. The photos showed my father and a woman in compromising positions in a hotel room. They were lying in bed together, although covered by a blanket, their bare upper bodies were exposed. My father's expression was unpleasant, sitting there stiffly.
"Now that Rose is back, you tell her!" my mother wiped away her tears and gritted her teeth, saying to my father. "Dad, what exactly is going on?" The shock I experienced was no less than my mother's. In my impression, my parents were the most affectionate couple in the world, and my father had never engaged in any extramarital affairs. I was influenced by their love, so I firmly believed that I could pursue Charlie and live a happy life with him.
