Chapter 59 A Sudden Tenderness
"Childish." Charlie coldly uttered this word, changed into a black down jacket, put on a matching knit hat, and walked outside.
I followed him, tightened the scarf around my neck, and began rolling snowballs on the ground.
The snow was cold, and my hands quickly turned red from the cold. A servant brought me gloves, so I put them on and continued my snowman-building mission. Charlie, on the other hand, just stood there without moving.
"I wanted you to build a snowman with me. I didn’t ask you to watch me build one," I said unhappily.
"Do you still consider yourself a child?" Charlie replied irritably. "You're so childish even though you're grown up. What's the point of building a snowman?"
Did he speak this way when he built a snowman with Lauren in our previous life? Annoyed, I picked up a piece of snow and unceremoniously threw it at Charlie.
Charlie patted the spot where the snow hit him and retaliated by throwing snow at me without showing weakness.
The two of us started a snowball fight, but Charlie had more strength and accuracy than me. He hit me every time while I kept missing in my panic.
I felt unwilling to accept my defeat. When Charlie bent down to pick up some snow, I seized the opportunity, rushed over, and jumped into his arms, holding onto his waist tightly. I then looked up at him and said, "Go ahead, hit me. If you beat me, you can happily marry Lauren!"
Snowflakes fell on my face, my eyelashes, and even on Charlie's hair. He looked down at me, his eyebrows and eyes impeccably attractive.
The atmosphere seemed to freeze as our gazes locked. Although I had loved him for ten years and had shared intimate moments with him as husband and wife, this kind of innocent playfulness was still a first for us.
I didn't know if I was intentionally trying to get ahead of Lauren or if I was using this as an excuse to compensate for my pitiful past self.
"Playing dirty?" Charlie finally looked away, his expression slightly unnatural. He threw the snowball on the ground, and I quickly let go.
Charlie went back to the room, leaving me lost in the snow for a while before I snapped back to reality and prepared to continue building a snowman. But after a short while, I gave up.
It was so cold that I only started feeling alive again after taking a hot bath. While lying on the bed, I opened the monitoring system on my phone and found the footage of me and Charlie having a snowball fight just now.
Under the dim yellow light, snowflakes fluttered while I was looking up at Charlie with my arms around his waist. He raised a snowball above his head, and we locked eyes.
If I hadn't died once already, I might have been even more stubbornly infatuated with Charlie after witnessing this beautiful and romantic scene.
What was he thinking at that moment? Was he wishing that Lauren was in his arms instead of me?
I couldn't help but take a screenshot and set it as my lock screen wallpaper.
I eventually fell into a deep sleep, ignoring the phone call from Dylan. It was only when I woke up the next day and saw a missed call that I quickly called back.
"I need your help," Dylan said.
"What do you need?" I wasn't fully awake yet, and my voice was still groggy.
"Let's talk when we meet." Dylan forcefully arranged a meeting location and time, then hung up.
Confused, I ran my hand through my hair, got up, and pulled the curtains open to look outside. The balcony railing was covered in thick snow, reflecting patches of sunlight.
Meeting in this weather, what if I get into a car accident on the slippery road?
Lost in my thoughts, I suddenly noticed a well-made snowman on the lawn below. It looked beautiful. Delighted, I hurriedly changed my clothes and ran down. I asked the maid who was shoveling snow, "Did you build this snowman?"
"No, madam. Mr. Bennett did," the maid replied.
My heart skipped a beat. I couldn't describe the feeling. Charlie's sudden kindness toward me was like winning the lottery after buying tickets for ten years.
When Charlie built this snowman, he definitely kept calling me childish in his mind.
I smiled and approached the snowman. I picked up two black beans and a carrot, then went back and put eyes and a nose on it. I also took off my scarf and put it around the snowman.
"You're adorable!" I touched the snowman's head, feeling pleased. I went back inside happily and had breakfast, then called Tim to drive me to meet Dylan.
Dylan lived alone in a high-end apartment not far from the hospital.
It was my first time coming to his place. I had thought that with his aloof personality and him being a doctor, the interior design would have a cold, minimalistic style, with black, gray, and white colors dominating.
But to my surprise, as soon as I entered, I was greeted by solid wooden floors and warm yellow walls. The interior was decorated with great warmth and comfort, emitting a faint fragrance.
"Have a seat." Dylan dragged a suitcase into the living room and then brewed a cup of hot tea for me, offering a plate of golden cookies. "I baked these cookies, try one."
After saying that, he called a name, and a beautiful plush cat came running out, its big tail dragging on the ground. It meowed docilely before leaping into Dylan's arms.
After a while, he said to me, “I'm going to study abroad for about half a month. Take Bubu back home and take care of him for me.'"
I almost dropped the biscuit I had just picked up. Turns out, I was being asked to take care of a cat.
"I don't know how!" I shook my head.
"It's well-behaved. Just feed it every day and play with it a little." Dylan walked over and placed the cat in my arms.
The cat nuzzled against me, indeed very well-behaved.
Dylan took out a box containing the cat's food and toys. "Let's go downstairs."
I had to fulfill this duty and reluctantly carried the cat downstairs.
Dylan drove to the hospital. I took the cat and the box, and Tim drove me back to Maple Villa.
Pets truly are excellent companions. With Bubu by my side, I found it enjoyable. In just one day, it had adapted to my home. When I took it to the music room to play, it would lie down to listen.
Unable to resist, I took a beautiful photo of Bubu and posted it on Twitter, only to see Lauren's latest update.
Since she added me, I hadn't seen any updates from her. Her Twitter was visible for only three days. There were a few blank posts.
There was a photo of her hand catching snow, accompanied by a line of text: Am I special to you in your heart?
I recognized this sentence, it was a lyric from a song I used to like. The following line was: I'm afraid you'll never realize that I'm still by your side.
I used to think that this song perfectly described my feelings for Charlie, and now Lauren was using it to hint at her own feelings for Charlie?
