Chapter 56 Nothing Uncomfortable
Whether it's Charlie or Dylan, we didn't have any connection to begin with. It was only because of the butterfly effect caused by my rebirth that we had some unexpected encounters. Now that things are back on track, I can accept it.
In early winter, the chill in the air grew stronger. Wrapped in a white coat, I sat by the window, watching the falling leaves outside.
My phone buzzed, and Jane mentioned everyone in our group chat: Darlings, it's snowing! How about meeting up today?
Tina replied with a crying face: I want to meet up too, but I'm in charge of organizing a celebration party for the company in a couple of days!
Jane: Is your dad treating you like a daughter or a laborer? Go and protest!
Yolanda replied as well: Tina, do your best to become a powerful woman. Then you can support the three of us! We believe in you!
Jane added: Yolanda and Rose, let's go to the bar first, see if there are any handsome guys. If there are, we can invite a few to play an escape room game, then have some barbecue. After satisfying our hunger and thirst, we can go home and sleep. Perfect!
Her plan was quite perfect, and I was a little tempted. After all, it would be boring to stay alone at home. So, I replied: I'm in! Send me the address and I'll leave right away.
Yolanda also replied: I'll go too!
At that moment, small snowflakes drifted onto the window and quickly melted. It was really snowing. I grabbed a beige scarf, put it on, and set off for the bar.
As soon as I entered the bar, the temperature rose. Yolanda and I arrived almost at the same time and found Jane chatting with some handsome guys.
"Why are you two wearing such thick clothes? Take off your coats. We'll have a hot dance event later. The girls who go on stage to dance can get a free bottle of red wine, and the one with the highest popularity will also receive a 20% discount coupon for drinks for six months!" Jane was excited and reached out to pull off our coats.
This event seemed a bit peculiar, something I had never heard of, but I still took off my coat and put it aside.
Not far away, there was a colorful stage where several graceful women were swaying to the music, surrounded by an excited crowd. It was quite noisy.
I glanced around and spotted someone I knew, Jason.
It had been a while since we last contacted each other or met. After the breakup turmoil, he appeared visibly thinner, and his aura seemed somewhat gloomy and depressed.
It seemed like Jason often worked part-time in various bars, which I could understand. Such places had more relaxed staff management and higher income.
When Jason saw me, he paused for a few seconds and then walked over to me. "Mrs. Harrison."
"Working here?" I asked.
"Yeah, just part-time until the next semester. Then I'll find a proper job in a reputable company," Jason replied with a slight smile.
Jane widened her eyes as she looked at this young and handsome guy, and with her extraordinary memory, she recognized Jason. "Isn't this the cute guy who hit on you at Song Garden?"
I quickly pinched Jane to stop her. "What nonsense are you talking? He’s still a student!"
Jane quickly covered her mouth.
I turned to Jason and said, "Well, if there's anything I can help with, feel free to ask. You focus on your work."
"Mrs. Harrison, can we chat for a moment?" Jason stared at me.
I felt a bit flustered by his gaze but agreed nonetheless.
Jason and I went outside the bar. Small flurries of snow fell on the streets, creating a thin layer of white. His nose turned slightly red from the cold, and after taking a breath of chilly air, he began, "Mrs. Harrison, I know everything now."
"Your husband is the one pursuing Lauren," Jason lowered his voice, "you actually knew all along, didn't you? With your status, it's impossible that you haven't investigated. I just can't understand, don't you love your husband? How can you remain indifferent when you know what he's done? When we had dinner together with Lauren, didn't you feel uncomfortable?"
This kid is quite clever. I smiled and replied, "What's uncomfortable about it? I have money to spend, and my husband doesn't come home. Isn't this the most comfortable life for a modern woman?"
"Is that so?" Jason fell silent for a few seconds before continuing, "I had some contact with Lauren recently. She hasn't fully accepted your husband yet, but she said they've had open discussions about many things, including you. I never thought she would become his mistress."
I rubbed my arms, the thin turtleneck sweater couldn't keep out the cold. If I stayed out much longer, I could catch a cold.
"People always change. You'll get used to it eventually, Jason. I'm going inside, it's too cold!" I sniffed and said.
"Alright!" Jason nodded, and we returned to the bar together.
He resumed his work, and I found Yolanda. Jane was on the stage at the moment, wearing a black strap dress and holding a blood-red rose in her mouth. With the pulsating music, cheers erupted from the audience, and roses occasionally flew onto the stage.
The one who received the most roses would be tonight's popular goddess.
Yolanda looked at me with a playful smile and asked, "Rose, why don't you go up and dance?"
"I don’t want to embarrass myself!" I waved my hand.
"How is that possible? I remember you joined the dance club in college, and I saw you dance. It was amazing!" Yolanda encouraged me, "Give it a try! You might even captivate some handsome guys. Dating younger men is so popular now, aren't you tempted?"
I was about to continue refusing, but I caught a glimpse of a few people.
Clint walked in the front, followed by Dylan and Michael, walking side by side. Charlie and Lauren were last in line.
Why did they come here too? My eyelid twitched as I watched them go upstairs and take their seats. Those positions allowed a view of the stage from above.
Charlie and Lauren sat together, while Dylan, Clint, and Michael sat on the other side.
If Jason were to see them...
"Oh wow! The dance moves just now were so hot! Any more beautiful ladies want to come up and show off?" someone asked loudly.
I looked at Lauren. She was wearing a pink sweater, and she seemed a bit restrained and nervous. When Charlie poured her a drink, she shook her head.
Charlie was wearing a black turtleneck sweater, and his coat was already off and placed to the side. I didn't know what he said to Lauren, but she smiled.
Why is my vision so good? I can see every little impurity, and it feels like a thorn in my heart.
I turned and went to the bar, ordered a bottle of liquor, and downed almost half of it in one gulp. Drawing strength from the restlessness inside my chest, I made my way toward the stage.
Lauren is a pure white rose, and I am like a wildflower found on the side of the road.
After I got on stage, there were whistles and cheers from the surrounding crowd. I glanced at the passionate gazes below, took a deep breath, and waited for the music to start.
